RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Which suggests Ruby inherited more than Summer's looks and love of hooded cloaks; Ruby also adopted Summer's combat skirt.
Ruby probably tries to emulate her mother that she lost when very young to feel closer to her, although I'm not 100% sure that Summer is wearing a combat skirt, in the photography it looks like she has her left foot against the tree and so what we see is her knee.

Here's a zoomed in version.

It looks like a combat skirt. The bottom of it is kind of frilly and bent, not like a knee would be. It's also out of alignment with the second visible leg, which is bent.

Now that you mention it, indeed it 's more likely to be a combat skirt.

Summer seems to be the shy type, seeing how she stands slightly behind her teammates and how much her cape cover her, we even get to see only part of her face, the opposite of her daughter (who's socially awkward but still outgoing), and amusingly her demeanor is the polar opposite of Raven, who's in the forefront, posing proudly while smiling and under the most light. Amusing that Taiyang fell for both women with such apparent opposite personalities.

Did you look closely at the frame I uploaded? Here's a cropped and slightly brightened image from another frame:

The object near her waist clearly doesn't line up with her legs below as it would if it were her knee. It must be a skirt.

That was my first impression. Though I've heard compelling arguments for different takes over on SB:

Not shy or quiet, she's leaning forward, using her butt to lean against the tree, using one hand for support. It's actually a pretty animated pose compared to the very stiff poses of the other three.

In fact, she actually "feels" younger with that pose, while looking towards the viewer. If she were shy or quiet, she would be looking away from us, likely using a hand to pull the cowl over her face to completely hide her from view, instead she letting herself "be seen" by putting her arms away from her, away from blocking her body, leaning forward so she's sure to be seen without the tree or teammates blocking her, and raising a knee so even more of her body is visible.

I'm guessing that she kept the hood on because she thinks she looks cool like that.

Anyway, when I look at Summer Rose in that picture, the word that comes to mind is "coy".

She's being coy, and Rooster Teeth is being coy. They're both teasing us deliberately by hiding as much of her as possible while she's standing in plain sight. We can plainly see one silver eye, but they go ahead and hide the other one. We can guess at her height, but she's bent and curved in such a way that her exact size isn't obvious. Her clothes underneath the cloak aren't important, but we can't see any of them. They're both pretending to hide stuff precisely because the mystery drives us wild.

(And they balance out the details they DO show -- her size, face, hair-color, eye-color -- with the important detail that they still keep completely concealed -- her weapon.)

Speaking of her silver eyes, Dorothy's magic slippers were originally made of silver.

And in the movie adaption, they were made of ruby.

Neat.

Interesting arguments, although personally I don't agree, simply because most of her body (that she's supposed to show off with her "coy" pose) is hidden by the cape, which gives her a difficult to distinguish silhouette.

Although the second post about RT deliberately being coy is a good Doylist explanation for her having most of her body hidden by the cape. It would be hilarious if it's revealed that she has an eyepatch her left eye, since eyepatch Ruby is rather popular among authors and fan artists to depict an older and baddass Ruby!

So theory on how each member of JNPR will die given all of the people who think they are gonna die.

Jaune: in a fire.

Nora: fighting one of those snake Grimm.

Pyrrha: fighting Grimm after she loses her Semblance

Ren: suicide

These are based off of how their inspirations died. Except for Pyrrha, because I can't work getting her heel stabbed as her death.

So, I'm trying to parse the lyrics, and there's a few places I'm not entirely sure what exactly's being said due to the metal scream vocals.

Maybe red's like roses?
Maybe it's the pool of blood
The [innocents waylaid/were laying when?] and in the end you failed to save them
[your deadened eyes?] are wide and white like snow
and now they know the cost of trusting you's obliteration

Mirror's will shatter
crushed by the weight of the world
[their petty lives collapse?] in shame

There'll be no rest
There'll be no love
There'll be no hero in the end who will rise above.
And when it ends
[gotta crawl?]

The shining light will sink in darkness
Victory for hate and carnage
Misery and pain for us
[when it falls?]

Stuff in brackets is my best guess. You guys got any input? Tune is full of laughs and cheer regardless.

My best guess is something like
The [innocents waylaid/were laying when?] and in the end you failed to save them
Were laid where in the end you failed to save them
[your deadened eyes?] are wide and white like snow
I think that's it
[their petty lives collapse?] in shame
The pillars collapse
You will (you'll?) crawl
Same

Of course Ruby inherited her mother's combat skirt.

Yang inherited Raven's.

Anyway, I see mysterius has already posted my post, but I'm going to repost my repost.

And most archaic mirrors were made of silver plus several lyrics refer to mirrors and mirrored eyes, though that connection would be stronger if Rubes had more screentime where she helps characters have realisations about them selves and come to term with those realisations.

The closest thing to that was Oobleck. Though one could maybe see it as Oobleck getting the other three girls to look at themselves in the mirror that is Ruby, by comparing their own motivations against hers and how Oobleck didn't interrogate her.

Mirrors normally just sit there, after all. Either you look at them yourself, or someone points one at you.

Which means that "Mirror, Mirror" is hinting at white rose.

Maybe.

If we're desperate.

And so all has come full circle. I actually wonder if there will be fan-animation done in more traditional anime style once the Japanese dub is released.
And the Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of The Wheel of Time. But the traditional-style anime was a beginning.

I know for a certainty that someone will use it to argue that RWBY was made in Japan. I have seen it before and I can see it again.
