RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

The sniper who failed to hit Ren while he was distracting her, yes, he sniper that did not move until after she was directly attacked. The one who failed to pick them off in melee, the sniper everyone consistently and reliably dodged or blocked, yes that is the sniper I am referring to.

If instead he sent Ren to attack he he solves a problem instead of making a problem. They no longer have to worry about having her shooting into melee and can press their advantage. I would disagree Ren is a lightweight as well, we know he has enough aura he can kill large grimm with his aura. He dodged every shot at him from the sniper, had he closed he had a chance to engage the sniper and while she had decent mobility no matter what she is out of the fight and Pyrrha and Nora were more than enough for the remaining team members as we saw before he split his team and put them back on the defensive.
Are you just criticizing some of his decisions being not optimal or are you just nitpicking him for his problems? No, I'm serious here, because people are always so ambiguous when talking about a character making mistakes, like they have to be always right always optimal always pragmatic because then they is really competent and then they is really awesome - or when they were just genuinely trying to point out where they went wrong and how they could do better.

Although I'm still not sure about complaining about a character making mistakes when not making mistakes they'll just get a Mary Sue label anyways. It's like Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't kind of situation.

I think one of the main problems with coming to any sort of conclusion is the fact that we just don't have enough information to do anything solid. For all we've been told by the WoR videos, we don't actually know that much about Remnant's history. I mean, let's see....

Humanity have fought Grimm since before recorded history, eighty years ago there was a war over individual liberties, which the totalitarian rulers lost. Some time after that there was another war over deporting every Faunus on the planet to Menagerie (I hope you appreciate the irony), of which we only know one battle, and which presumably the Faunus either won or forced a draw. And in recent years the White Fang rose and then became violent.

That's....not a lot to go on in terms of figuring out the place of anything in a historical context.

Oh, and I'm fairly certain that the Faunus are actually superior to humans, since it was mentioned that they do have night vision and stuff :p

I have to say Blake certainly seems more open and relaxed. I was pleasantly surprised at the thawing of her previous cool and collected attitude. Always good to see some visible changes, especially since she spent most of the last Volume working through some of her issues.

Also Nora's 'grey' moment was a bit of a surprise to me. I think it was the first time we've seen her extreme temperament go into such a negative direction. That could prove to be interesting if the OP and talk of this season being 'grimmer' than the previous ones is true. And yes that was totally intentional. :p

RWBY VOLUME 3: Things get Grimmer

So... With the recent Blake/Sun stuff in canon as well as Bumblebee Baiting and a lot of people saying 'stuff' about femslash shippers I decided I wanted to offer my own, personal, perspective on why I sometimes ship what I ship in RWBY, or why I anti ship all things. (The latter is easy to explain)

For the explanation to work this requires casting ones minds back a good few years before RWBY. I was a fan, though far from an expert of Monty Oum's work, specifically Dead Fantasy and Haloid, especially the latter, and they left a deep impact on me as being my first experiences with independent machinima being truly off the walls amazing! And I will say honestly that, yes, the ending of Haloid may have coloured my expectations for RWBY somewhat, not entirely that alone wouldn't be enough but it definitely played a part.

However, even without that there's a good chance I would have shipped, and to an extent hoped for certain ships if there was to be romance at all. Now, I could go on a long post detailing my personal arguments or views about what works, what doesn't, the narrative role of characters, development, and the romances in general but... That's not really what I came here to do and frankly whatever I might say about Blake/Sun, I like Sun as a character and feel he and Blake's relationship,s romantic or otherwise is fairly well done.

So, where am I going with this? Put simply, it was less about what I expected of RWBY (and certainly never demanded or even vocalised a request to) and more about what I hoped would or could happen. When I first saw the trailers for RWBY it looked like everything I ever wanted in a show, women of diverse personalities and abilities being amazingly awesome in an action oriented setting that was seemingly avoiding all the usual bullshit that comes up in ninety five percent of other media where a woman exists in an action setting.

And with that part of me hopes, and maybe even got fed on some rumours that the show was not just going to be going against the normalcy grain in one way but several. This led to me hoping for one of two things, the first being a purely action oriented series where characters had friends, family but romance didn't play a part. The second was a desire for a show where heterosexuality was not necessarily the default norm, where all the things considered 'normal' that are only deemed that way due to the weight of history and built up cultural expectations were, not ignored, but only one part of a much wider spectrum of emotional and physical development and views.

And part of me believed it could be true because RWBY was on the internet and even more it was made by an independent company who only had their fans to appease, no censorship, no whiny parents and other 'groups' that think they have a right to tell people what they are allowed to watch, or at least none that would have the degree of influence they normally do over television, comics ETC. RWBY 'could' have broken every boundary of normalcy and built in expectations and the only thing to do would be to see if the fans liked it (which I'd have hoped they would have if it was still at its current level of writing and execution and focus.)

That was not to be however, I acknowledge that, a part of me had no choice to do that from the first episode and I did so without vocal outrage or complaint and I've never so much as tried to direct a bad word at the staff, the writers or anyone else. RWBY is not at fault for not being the genre and trope breaking series that cracked every one of the usual expectations for a show over their knee like its metaphorical spine was a twig. I cannot hold RWBY to an impossible, or near impossible standard, that would be unfair and deny the writers their right to creativity and to be frank, RWBY is still beyond the norm in so many laudable respects and I still adore the show and I don't see that changing in the future.

So I might read ship fics or praise fan art that doesn't match the series perfectly but speaks to me and has allowed a fan to express them self and I will analyse and I will critique whatever is placed before me on screen, whether it be fic, show or art because that is what I enjoy doing and somehting that I reserve almost exclusively for series that I love.

Waiting with baited breath for the next episode,

Zam.

Edit: PS, Apologies for the drawn out metaphors.

I may find your question funny but I am interesting in seeing how they do the puns and jokes. As I imagine that some/most/all don't translate from English to Japanese that well.

What I meant are they going to do the same ones only translated or more local equivalents?

For example I recall in the JP trailer Yang was going Ora Ora Ora Ora when beating up the Ursa.

Probably keep all the ones they can like onomatopoeias for sure since those seem popular with otakus and puns using English are not uncommon in manga while adding Japanese ones where there are clear opportunities.

If the second volume gets dubbed, I'm curious how the Japanese translators will handle Ruby's speech in the first chapter:
I'm wondering how many foreign audiences will catch the Lincoln, MLK Jr, and Nixon references ("Four score and seven minutes ago", "I had a dream", and "I'm not a crook", respectively). More than the number of people who catch Japanese historical references in anime?

Ruby: Four score and seven minutes ago, I had a dream.
Yang: This oughta be good.
Ruby: A dream that one day, the four of us would come together as a team, and have the most fun anyone has ever had EVER!
Weiss: Did you steal my binder?
Ruby: I am not a crook .

Winter apparently is something of a bitch.
Qrow seems to think very little of Ironwoods securities measures.

Huh. I actually guessed Winter used two swords, and I had her personality down pat. However she's even colder than I expected, I would have thought she would give Ruby some credit for somehow proving to Weiss that she deserved to be in charge. ...Or Weiss' "happy memories" are a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome as Winter was the only one not completely abusive.

Huh, is it me or does Qrow sound like Raiden? I am also surprised he uses a big sword. Isn't he a scythe user? Well, I guess he may have changed after Raven, Summer and Stuff.

At first, I thought that he looked a little young to be Ruby uncle, but looking at him again in action. I can say that I was wrong. He does look Ruby's uncle-ish age.

Winter is well. I wasn't expecting her to be like that. I was always expecting the not good enough role to be played by Weiss's dad. Although, I guess that could still be the case here. That is not a bad thing. I suppose we will get to see more of her as time goes on.

Ever play BlazBlue? One of the main characters, Ragna, uses a 'scythe' that unfurls from a giant sword during his Ultimate Move. Qrow probably has the same, so he can have multiple ways of killing things.

Considering how surprised Ruby was to find a person who was a sword user and just a sword user I do not think Qrow has just a sword. Winter is indeed quite the surprise in personality.

Honestly looking at the trailer both Qrow and Winter seem like jerks. At least towards people they don't know or aren't emotionally invested in.

At least Qrow has the excuse of being hilariously drunk.

How he acts sober is the better question.
