RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Torchwick loses some of his personality, at least in the one line I fully understood.

Here, he just tells his hired goons "Go (get her)" with an air of boredom. But in the original English, he's being sarcastically condescending with, "Well, get her", perfectly expressing his opinion that the loaner thugs are too stupid to realize that they should ALREADY be doing that without needing to wait for him to tell them.

Does anyone else feel like the Japanese dubber just isn't hitting that "I'm surrounded by idiots" attitude for which Torchwick is famous?

You're not the only one getting that impression.

It's a dub. Not everyone is going to be a gem.

But yes.

Weren't people really disappointed/annoyed by Ruby's voice in episode 1 back when it first released?

Huh, is it me or does Qrow sound like Raiden? I am also surprised he uses a big sword. Isn't he a scythe user? Well, I guess he may have changed after Raven, Summer and Stuff.
I like Qrow's voice, it has a nice blend of gruffness of a veteran that saw and lived through lots of shit (like the death of half of his team) with the cockiness and confidence born of the experience that comes by being a veteran.

Did he break the robots then wise guy ;)
The robots tried to arrest Qrow for drunk and disorderly conduct, but Qrow knew how to handle them.

Youtube provides!

Hm. Something seems... different....

Nah, probably just my imagination. :V
I'll be disappointed (but not surprised) if the Japanese version just uses the subs for the English version. Assuming they even bother to export it, which seems unlikely enough already given the existence of the English source.

I wonder if there's a chance any fansubbers will tackle it.

No comment on Ruby, but I felt Torchwick sounded less cocky in the Japanese dub.

On the other hand, random thug #004 was way better. :V

Anyway, my favorite line of Torchwick's from that sequence: "You were worth every cent. Truly you were." Oh well, we can still look forward to Ryuko as Yang.

I think that's connected to all the mistaken impressions people had on what the characters' personalities would be like from the trailers, Ruby and Weiss's especially.

Pretty much.

Seriously, I watched the trailers again after so long and it's enormous how big are the differences. Ruby in her trailer looked like a super stoic mercenary who cutted down her enemies with not a shred of mercy, thought, or care. The only time she showed any emotion was when she briefly flashed an arrogant smirk at one of the beowolves. Weiss seemed like a very shy and quiet girl, especially with the lyrics talking about how lonely she is. And Yang was a bit closer but she in the trailer was a lot more troll-ish than she actually turned out to be.

The only one that was somewhat close was Blake.

To be fair, all four trailers were fundamentally concepts for the series rather than proper trailers, per se. This is especially true for Red and to a lesser extent for White. The Red Trailer was ultimately more about weapons and fighting style than any actual character--the reason Red (as opposed to the character Ruby Rose that she became) seems stoic is because she didn't actually have any character assigned to her, Monty even admitted as such. White is more fleshed out as indicated by the lyrics to "Mirror, Mirror," but it's still evidently more of a concept than a person.

It's really only with the Black and the Yellow Trailers and the actual approach of the series premiere itself that their characters started coming together; even so, they're definitely a lot bigger on spectacle than involved storytelling. And considering the jump in quality between Volume 1 and Volume 2, it's evident that even at that stage the creative team was still finding their footing.

On Yang specifically, it's pretty clear that she's the flattest character of Team RWBY in Volume 1. She's the most ancillary member of the team in that volume, mostly defined by her relationships as Ruby's sister and Blake's partner. That's the major reason she received a lot more focus in Volume 2, with the revelation of her Semblance, her interaction with Blake (and the retelling of her backstory), and ultimately the introduction of Raven at the end of the Volume.

*raises hand* Though given Roman's 'no-fucks-given' expression, it's probably forgivable that the voice reflects that and not include the sarcasm.

Now I'm just hoping that it'll sound sarcastically when the Jap dub reaches Vol2 and Roman has to give a speech at a White Fang rally.

In White's case there is also the fact that trailer is pretty abstract, what with Weiss singing in front of a huge crownd and the knight coming out of nowhere, and their fighting happening while she is still apparently singing.

It ultimately feels less like something that's actually happening and more something the makers decided to show how her inner self is feeling.

Didn't Monty confirmed that the fight against the giant knight thing really happened?

Personally, I always thought the concert and the fight happened separately. I've seen others assume differently (e.g. a fanfic that thought it was some sort of live combat performance), but that never made much sense to me: to me, the fight was clearly some sort of flashback.

I honestly assumed that it was kind of a mental thing with the golem as a stand in for some other figure in her life.
