RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Byronic heroes are usually social outcasts so I don't think Ironwood qualifies. I agree Qrow is a good pick, but I'd also throw in Adam as a much more classic example. With a slight change in perspective he would fit pretty much all the criteria. You could also make a case for Blake up to about volume 5 or so.

Edit: honestly with a little tweaking of her motivation, Cinder might be the best candidate out of all of them. Byronic heroes tend to be agents of social upheaval by sheer force of personality and she definitely hits that mark.

The problem for Cinder and Adam is that the misery and revenge overwhelmed any positive qualities, of the archetype, thus costing them the heroic part of it outside of the classical definition.

The classical definition is the intended definition. It has its roots in victorian era romanticism, and is in fact named after lord Byron, who certainly couldn't be called heroic in a modern sense.

Being overwhelmed by emotion to the point of self destruction is arguably the most defining aspect of the archetype.

Sorry for the belated response, been very busy lately, but this is an interesting set of observations, I definitely think Adam would regard himself as such though I don't think he is capable of deep affection. I still think Raven fits quite well, but do agree with your observation that Cinder could in some ways work very well.

Anyway, have some Bumbleby material!

Not disagreeing, but also not getting my hopes up given how long it's been since they were talked about.

On the other hand unless I'm misunderstanding things they're going to have to make Something. RWBY is out of their hands now and maybe I'm just in the wrong circles but it doesn't seem like anyone is talking about the other works they were giving attention. So now seems like the perfect time to look at some of their older stuff and see what they might be able to bring back to get fans back in the door

RWBY is owned by Viz instead of WB, but parts of RT's creative team are apparently starting up a new studio under Viz, likely in order to continue RWBY, so I don't know the status of various IPs RT held and who might be the ones to get to do things with them.

I don't want to see a repeat of Gen:Lock.

Besides, a lot of companies just sit on IPs in order to spite people who want to do things with them.

Frankly RWBY is too big for RT-as-bought-by-Burnie.

And I'm pretty sure Burnie would agree, sounds like he's aiming to recreate the small but successful early days and not the huge org it became.

Finally saw the RWBY/Justice League crossover.. it was kinda just ok, really. It felt like a regular RWBY episode, not really 'special' in any way...

I admit I'd taken a peek at the batman/RWBY comic and was not impressed.

The 'crossover' costumes for the girls didn't feel right to me and Batman 'suddenly' getting a passive Semblance that allowed him to perfectly dismantle the entire team was something of an eyeroll for me.

I actually liked the movie and especially comic RWBY fits.

But I completely agreed on the wankiness of Batman being able to fight RWBY, and his Semblance, extremely meh.

I've gone on record regarding Batman's movie temptation making sense, multiple main-line versions of Batman are extremely tempted by power and this Batman also has had his memory shot, so he's very much back in the mentality of himself as a teenager who felt he had no agency or ability to effect things suddenly granted power and purpose. He didn't come out of Crime Alley with a fully developed ideology and obsessive commitment to Gotham, he grew into these things over time and in many cases grew worse over time to boot, Batman is not a static character.
