RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Oh wow, look, things that were never said! Thank you for proving that nothing anything say matters because you will just create plain BS without reading anything that is written. Thank you my friend, thank you. You are a perfect representative of the RWBY community.

"Do we engage with the arguments presented?"

"Nah, just create some BS to then pretend to have a moral highground, that always works"

I'm not impressed with a plan that calls for sending Weiss sending back to her family alone. Cordovan literally spells it out in her introduction; Weiss has "come to her senses and wishes to return to her family". And not only that, she refuses to let the rest of the team follow Weiss, claiming Atlas will not be responsible for their safety because of their "questionable character". While she might have a point with Blake, who is an ex-White Fang terrorist, the rest is because they're non-Atlesians.

In theory, Weiss could try to travel home alone in secret, but considering the SDC is still technically in the good graces of the Atlesian government, there is a non-zero chance the second Weiss gets home, she would be escorted into house arrest on orders of her father. Ironwood might be the most powerful man in Atlas, but even I doubt he would consider Weiss worth dropping on his sword on so close to the election.

The way I saw it, the heroes spent a couple fo years separated, and are now aware that they are against an immortal witch who can control Grimm and with agents infiltrated everywhere, so after the clusterfuck in Haven and managing to reunite, they decided that from now on the golden rule will be to always stick together as much as possible and bring the relic to Atlas ASAP, as they know that Ironwood is one of the people from Ozpin's inner circle that is on their side since he fought with them during the fall of Beacon.

Now comes Cordovin, that insists to give to Weiss only the authorization to go to Atlas, alone, with only the promise of an escort and that Ironwood will be notified of her arrival.
Which is nice all-right, but doesn't change the fact that it would mean separating Weiss from the rest of the group, meaning that she'll be alone if something happens, like if Salem has agents on Atlas (or maybe even Cordovin, who knows at this point?), or if crazy scorpion dude, berserker Dust junkie or some other psycho assassin is waiting for her there.

And giving the relic to Weiss is too high a risk if something does happen during her trip, and keeping it with the rest of the group would mean that it won't be on the move for a time, with the risk that the aforementioned psychos get their trail and attack Argus.

So they decide to steal an airship to stay together and on the move. Was it a great plan? Not really, as it would (and did) antagonize the Argus authorities, and it ended in a confrontation that damaged Argus' Colossus and attracted a fucking Grimm Kaiju forcing everyone to work together to take down, but at this point the heroes were done playing nice and law-abiding, especially when it's impossible to tell if the person in front of you is an agent of Salem or not.

With all this talk about Cordovin, I was surprised how I came around to her. I mean, she was literally introduced as an egotistical, racist, jingoistic bully. Yet, even after spending the length of two episodes trying to kill Ruby, when she comes face-to-face with the fact that she screwed up, she swallows her pride and makes things right.

I get the sense that she was dropped all the way out in Argus because Ironwood had been planning for a military coup for a long time, and the computer predictions showed that if he had launched that coup, Cordovin would oppose it out of a sense of duty to the kingdom.

berserker Dust junkie
First time I've heard that name be used for Hazel and I find it hilarious.

When I first watched it, I got more the sense that the reason she was all the way out there was because she was considered to be so utterly obnoxious that the higher ups of the military, Ironwood included, didn't want to put up with her and sent her off to Argus where she couldn't annoy them.

I also kept picturing everyone back in Atlas as throwing a "SHE"S FINALLY GONE!" party when she was sent away to Mistral.

If they submit hard enough, the system will recognize their sacrifices and save them...somehow.
Oh, so thinking like Rhodes.
the heroes spent a couple fo years separated,
Technically at least a couple of months, up to half a year or so.
with only the promise of an escort and that Ironwood will be notified of her arrival.
Which wouldn't tell him that she's in on the secret and has important things to get to him ASAP.

I get the feeling she was more to get us in the mindset that James might still come around until the last moment, make us keep wondering if he might be too far gone or not right up until he shot Oscar.

When the shit hit the fan Cordovin was able to stop and look at the situation and realize her mistake and turn around to do the right thing, even if it was against her own regulations. James doesn't let himself reconsider anything, and that's what dooms him.

I mean from what they would have seen by that point...

And yet there's still old propaganda posters of her in the subways or somewhere else in the background that was kind of funny to see when it came out.

I don't think it was a scheme by James. I think it's just that while she's very competent and loyal beyond a doubt, she's also arrogant, has no control over her temper and must be fucking exhausting to deal with on a daily basis. So she was assigned somewhere important, but far away from them.

I'm getting the sense that the argument is that the girls should be submitting to people and systems that clearly spell out that their continued safety, well-being, and lives are against their agendas. Blake should give Adam a chance. Weiss needs to go back to being a prisoner of her father. If they submit hard enough, the system will recognize their sacrifices and save them...somehow.

There's a reason I have an ideological disdain for Atlas, especially after we get a front-row seat to how it gave birth to Cinder. A society that accepts child slavery as a privilege of the wealthy, sees no issue with abrogating any and all services to 'those' portions of their population, sees transparency as an enemy tool instead of a right of their people, and compels the death and sacrifice of 'those' people without offering anything in return, is not a system that should be respected. Anyone who has the misfortune to be born in Mantle has negative obligations to follow anything Atlas orders them to. If a nation compels your death without offering to even try to save your loved ones, why should you obey?
This is a scalding hot take and I am here for it, kudos on the insights there, that definitely seems to line up well with the common refrains and subtext to all these ideas. Hell one could take that stupid "How dare Ruby hirt Tyrian!" argument as falling into a similar track, and speaking of that: updated comic XD:

This is a brilliant breakdown on the nature of Atlas and everything that makes it so gut wrenchingly awful as a place, well said!

So today, on Blake's Birthday, in the month where we're supposed to get news about the next season, RT has announced....

A bunch of Salem merch. Including a mousepad
Sure as hell not gonna buy it, but there is something amusing comedic about them always making it the weird immortal creatures, Jinn, Ambro, Salem. The Gods of Light will be next at this rate.

From what we have seen the only society in RWBY that is any form decent is Vale. The rest have a different flavors of awful.

Mistral pretend to care about it's people and it's basically ruled by crime syndicates with the Capital being the only thing they really care about.

Vacuo doesn't even pretend and subscribes to the rule of the strong. Along with a bit of hatred to outsiders. With everyone doing their own thing. The kingdom basically only exist since the Academy is the only thing propping up the council.

Then Atlas is the authoritarian state which has a huge wealth disparity that is only equal to Mistral. While Mistral corruption is an open secret Atlas tries to paint a nice coat on its issues.

I think it's a combination of this, and being unable to extend their militia any further. It lacks the ability to do anything outside the capital, hence the sharing arrangement with Atlas for Argus.

I've suspected for a while that the fatal flaw in Vacuo will be that while Theo has the authority Ironwood only dreamed of, he lacks the government to really achieve anything. No one bothers to step up and help the guy, because 'he's handling it'. Which is just counting down to disaster.

It mostly looks passively like ours, so issues don't stick out as much. I'm sure that if we got to see more than a student's perspective we'd be seeing a lot more concerning things. For instance that was an awfully packed recruitment drive for the White Fang Blake spied on...

Well, the police certainly weren't very impressive.

And there seems to be a fairly large organized crime scene.

And in this case there's something I feel has to be addressed. Now, I understand that there are going to be arguments in this thread, and as long as it's related to the main topic of RWBY that's fine. There have, of course, been some instances of users skirting along the edge of the thread rules - and I'd advise them to refrain from doing that in the future - but it's mostly been somewhat tame.

However, it becomes an issue when a user goes out of their way to not only act in a condescending manner towards other users in a debate, but to also go out of their way to insult a whole community because they have had a poor experience in past interactions with them. Now, I'm not about to speak on their past experience, but I do know that it's highly likely that insulting a community in a thread dedicated to that community is not a wise move, nor is it particularly mindful. So!

That user is taking a week break from the thread. Also, just a reminder to tone down the heat in the debate in general, and make more of an effort to debate in good faith on all sides, regardless of your feelings regarding RWBY or RT or what have you.

So uh. Yeah. Don't be jerks to each other guys.

Vale has a major racism and corruption issue. Open racism against faunus is still accepted in Vale. Also, the cops are apparently mobbed up or incompetent if Roman's map is anything to go by.

And are more open to blaming the White Fang for a dust shop robbery rather than any of the criminals, of which Roman is known and is guilty of such kinds of robberies, in the city.

So I looked at the RWBY Reddit and boy people are really kind focused on Ruby slicing off the tail thing. It's funny though the few people arguing it's sort of racist confuse me because like. Ruby is definitely the kind of person who would slice off an arm in a fight.

Honestly its quite cathartic to see an outrage monger's intentionally bad take get an appropriate amount of mockery for once.

I mean there's the usual complainer crowd whining up a storm, like I see someone there arguing its bigoted for Ruby to ask if Tyrian has ties to the White Fang before she asked about Roman Torchwick despite them being one sentence.

But yeah, Ruby's ruthless when she needs to be, this is the girl who has tried to launch Neo to her death no less than twice, the first of which was by Neo's own weapon and the second was by using Neo's own rage& trauma against her.
