RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

A user by the name of @ThePoarter had brought up various ways to handle Faunus discrimination, basing it off past historical events. However, that therein lies the problem: it's all in the past. If we're to compare status of relationships to our modern day society, then it's clear that the Faunus-Human race relations are roughly around the Noughties. Done are the days of lynching Faunus due to them being different from humans and they've begun to more or less view them as equals. Sure, there's still problems here and there (there's still some bullying and labor practices), but for the most part, they got the major problem solved and even have a Faunus be elected into a high spot in society (Lionheart).
Legal segregation is still a thing, one common enough that the White Fang had plenty of targets and Lionheart was specifically appointed by Ozpin not elected.

As such, there wasn't really much racist incidents to cover save for the scars committed years ago. Just scars that keep getting picked at. We don't know how long ago that "No Faunus Allowed" sign was put up, for instance, and the White Fang was a carryover from the revolution. There's some truth to the "White Fang are abusers" theory, though. Perhaps Faunus society has changed for the better, but some people are bitter over either how long it took to get to that point or still believe humans resent Faunus and decide to bite back. Note how no one in the White Fang who fully believe in "the cause" cared at all about peace. Not even Sienna cared about peace, just getting the humans to understand through fear. When the White Fang symbol was formed in the WOR segment of Faunus, Qrow said how some people would "get even". Not "aim for peace" or "equality", but getting revenge.
No one has ever questioned the validity of the Faunus's issues save bigots and antagonists who profit of their exploitation, saying stuff like "How long it " and "Still believe" makes it sound like they are complaining about ancient, rather than very recent history and projecting bigotry where there is none which sounds... Super uncomfortable at best.

Ghira openly acknowledged that he and Sienna fought for the same thing, Sienna just wanted to make it so humans couldn't/wouldn't oppress Faunus due to the consequences because she has understandably little faith in their willingness to hold to any deals when humanity has only ever changed because of violence and keeps backsliding.

As I said, we don't know how long that sign was up for, so it could have been a product of its time.
This argument makes no sense. When segregation ended, the "No Coloreds" and "Whites Only" signs were taken down, not left up decades later for posterity.

The bartender wasn't that old. The sign was handwritten, not carved in wood or stone, and easy to remove. The fact that the sign was still up means that there are a) no laws against that sort of discrimination in this part of Mistral, b) insufficient public disapproval to make it a bad business decision to do so (can you imagine the outcry today if a business declared that they were only going to serve white people?) and c) that the owner of the establishment is still openly racist.

Yeah, I kind of wish that they just replaced the White Fang with racist cops.
Maybe not "replaced with" but if they were going to have the White Fang, then they needed to also show the other side. So yeah, having some racist cops hassling Blake for Walking While Cat or something. (Them chasing Sun in Volume 1 was possibly supposed to be this, but it doesn't really work when he's actually committing a crime by stowing away and throwing banana peels at them.)

Okay, so thinking about faunus and racism in terms of the 1970s, now I'm wondering: was there ever a trend of faunusploitation films? With titles like Foxy Brown (starring a fox faunus) and Calfed (that Calfed is one bad mother-) and Batcula (about a bat faunus vampire) and Cleocatra Jones and The Disco Dogfather?

(Yes, those are all puns on the titles of actual blaxploitation films.)

Oh, right. She had to pass for human to go to school. And the kids in Ilia's school (in Atlas, I presume) thought that faunus workers dying in a mining accident was funny.

I do get the impression the level of racism varies wildly. A lot of people in the towns don't care (except, of course, for the ones who do)- and the schools don't since they just want strength (Huntsmen are probably the main ambassadors of faunas goodwill, really). A lot of people in the elite circles have no faunas peers and old biases. Atlas is likely the worse, considering their use of faunas in mining.

Remnant is a more fracture society than ours, social progress in one area doesn't necessarily transfer over. Each kingdom is geographically separate with fairly distinct cultures, and then lots of villages and towns and such are culturally separate from them.

Not to mention a lot of it is probably similar to contemporary racism. Sure, nothing overt and outright said, but faunus get passed up for jobs, promotions, and recognition. When a particularly obvious faunus shows up, people tend to go to the other side of the street. They're automatically targeted by police as 'obvious suspects', etc. A lot of stuff that doesn't normally show well on the screen.

I mean hell look at Weiss. Her views on Faunus is a pretty good example of what sort of racism you find in "polite" company. She's not like Cardin or Roman calling them animals or attacking them. She'd likely think outright segregation is boorish or cruel, but she still clearly sees Faunus as naturally more violent or criminal. When confronted about it she tries to justify her feelings as being rational and based on the actions the White Fang has taken against her family without actually looking at why they'd take said actions. It's only after she actually is exposed to Faunus and is forced to see the world beyond her very limited upbringing does she actually start to change. The whole reconciliation process is not particularly well explored but it is there.

Weiss is probably the more common viewpoint than Roman. It's not that she hates Faunus as a rule but she has a shit ton of biases about them that she likely doesn't even think are biases.

Season 1: "We're the victims!"

Season 5: Preeetty sure Blake could convince her to join the White Fang, if non-faunas are allowed in.

If the White Fang were more of a general anti-SDC revolutionary or worker's rights group and operated in a more principled way, then I could see Weiss hating her father enough to be their mole on the inside.

Ah, but if she's on the outside, she doesn't have to deal with the Schnee company and her family- which she's been cut out of anyway.

Honestly I really want an AU where Weiss and Blake were partners. Unfortunately it would undercut Ruby needing to grow away from Yang.

Seriously though, she's weird to me in that she seems like she could be logic'd out of being racist. Albeit by being confronted with the actual crap the Faunus have to endure rather then her interactions reinforcing them as another problem in her long list of things that make her life bad(assassins yay!).

I had an idea that Weiss could join a moderate WF cell, as not all of the WF would be Faunus I imagine that they had plenty of humans that join to protect their friends and families, after one Schnee Mansion staff member helped her and kinda accidentally recruited her, her beef with Blake is mostly centered around the fact that most, if not all, of the moderate WF considered the Vale branch to be little more than thugs and thieves using the the WF good name and reputation to justify their crimes, Adam to be little better than a glorified bandit and Blake herself to be either a foolish girl that fails to see that she is surrounded by criminals, a stupid bimbo that is perfectly willing to desecrate her parent's work and ideals for her little boyfriend's "sword" or a poor and fragile flower that has been obviously brainwashed by the Mad Bull and has to be saved by a nice guy/girl.

[Discussion] Chibi Season 3, Episode 9: Tea Party
Tea Party - RWBY Chibi - Rooster Teeth

Chibi is out for Firsties.
Klein establishing the pecking order with Winter was awesome and hilarious. Unlucky Uncle Qrow was funny and sad, but the special effects were pretty awesome. I wonder if canon Qrow can ramp up his Semblance to that level. One of the WoG's where they talked about it made it sound like he normally has it at the lowest possible setting, with it passively charging itself up until it hits a peak and causes something bad to happen before resetting. Kind of sounds like he could deliberately crank it up so that it causes more and worse bad stuff if he wanted, probably at the cost of more Aura and with the caveat that he can't control precisely what will happen so if allies or civilians are around he risks jinxing them.

Also Ren's Apron is going to be sold in the RT store soon.

Ilya the attempted murderer of two completely innpcent and unrelated parties is hardly an unbiased source.

Now Sun? I can get behind Sun. And he calls the White Fang a bunch of self-righteous jerks who are making things harder for the rest of the faunus.

Even Blake herself can't defend the White Fang's actions. I believe she her best protest to Weiss calling the White Fang evil was "Not all the White Fang are bad people," which brings to mind a certain prominent politician insisting that a certain other group of radical extremists "has some good people." Blake also told son that she knew all along that the White Fang were criminals, she just didn't want to admit it to herself. Which makes her entire argument with Weiss about them kind of bunk

Yes thesevenwielder, I'm sure the writers will reveal that actually Ilia's whole backstory was a lie and the entire reason for her sliding down the slippery slope of radicalization was actually an elaborate ruse the entire time.

Clearly her defection to Blake was based on false premises and her being a key part of the defeat of Adam and the White Fang at Haven was just a part of their master plan to trick Blake into thinking that she had defeated Adam... For some reason.
