RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Something interesting I discovered on the RWBYwiki:

I did wonder why Cinder only had a problem with Aura not protecting her Grimm arm the first time she and Raven shattered their swords and not any of the other 87 times their weapons shattered in that fight. Well here's the answer. Looks like Cinder created a miniature version of Ozpin's bubble shield for a split second every time a sword shattered. A ingenious solution really, by creating a bubble around herself it doesn't matter if her arm is unprotected since the bubble shield will stop attacks before they can hit her arm, and since she only maintains the bubble for a instant it doesn't put much of a drain on her Aura reserves either. Damn does she have some good reflexes though.

So some interesting stuff with Raven's blades. Initially I thought the Downfall fight was a bit of a waste as far as her blade was concerned, since she never seemed to actually use the Dust in it. However it actually didn't go completely unused in that fight:

So ok, blue = ice. Good to know. That's one down at least. Since Hazel's raw Dust crystals were gold/yellow for lightning and red for fire that probably means the same applies to Raven's sword. So yellow blade = lightning (probably) and red blade = fire. That latter might be confirmed since if you look closer at the murder-stroke the cut on the rock appears to be blazing red, which could indicate that she used fire Dust to basically turn her sword into a lightsaber.

And considering that Weiss has her glyphs turn black when she uses Gravity Dust and that Ruby fires black blasts from her gun when using Gravity bullets and that the floating islands of Lake Matsu have giant black/obsidian/purple blocks of Gravity Dust embedded in them it seems fair to say that the black blade = gravity. Which is interesting since that's the blade that Raven used for her 180° maneuver at the end of the fight. Its possible that Raven used the Gravity Dust to ensure that the blade would anchor itself properly in the rock and not get ripped out when she pulled that stunt, which would be a cool detail if that's the case.

So with blue, red, yellow and black out of the way surely it will be easy to figure out what the rest of Raven's blades do right? Well it sure would have been nice to think so but unfortunately consistent color coding is not one of RWBY's strong suits, ironic for a show so obsessed with color.

The CRWBY just can't seem to make up their mind about whether White is the color of wind or earth. We see Weiss use white colored Dust to create wind effects in both Volume 3 and 5. But Dew Gayl has a green Dust crystal in her anchor/spear that she uses to create tornadoes with. And Leo uses red and white Dust to create his burning boulder attack. Blake also apparently only had white Dust left as a explanation for her rock clones in Volume 2 but Amber has a white Dust crystal on the part of her staff that creates wind. Its maddening!

Edit:
Ok, I have a possible explanation. Maybe there is both a White Dust type and a Grey Dust type and either Wind/Air or Earth/Rock or both comes in multiple colors depending on sub-types. So pure Green Dust is probably either Earth or Air/Wind. However most people don't find pure Earth Dust to be very useful in a fight so instead its mixed and combined with other Dust types (possibly with a 7:3 ratio of Earth:Fire or something like that) in order to create Rock Dust which makes for a better weapon and a better shield. Rock Dust is either white or grey and earth dust is either green or some other color.

Alternatively/additionally Air/Wind Dust might be very difficult to use so again some kind of sub-type was made by mixing it with other Dust Types. This new type of Wind Dust is weaker but easier to control and faster to fire, this is the white/grey Dust that Weiss uses. Its quick and convenient but not something a true master would use. Pure Air/Wind Dust on the other hand is Green and its what Dew Gayl uses, its more difficult to control and slower to get going but in return its way more powerful. Alternatively Dew's green Dust is the sub-element and is something like "Atmospheric Dust" or something in that vein, the air version of Gravity Dust basically. Its slower to get going because its more about manipulating the atmosphere itself rather than just creating a blast of wind but in return you can do crazy shit like making mini-tornadoes.

I think Green Dust being some kind of uber Wind Dust could make sense since that would be in line with Raven using it. Both in the sense that she would gravitate towards the more powerful option and that she's a top level Dust user so she's able to use the best stuff even when its more difficult to use.

Or it could just be that Dew Gayl was created by fans before we saw Wind/Air Dust in action and the WoR: Dust episode implied that Air=Green. Though the white/grey thing seems like something that should get clarified in the show since that still falls on the CRWBYs shoulders.

I think that Raven's black blade is not made out of dust, and is made of some sturdier material. Like, I think its her "normal" blade, for when she wants to hit stuff without swapping blade every 3 seconds. I don't think we saw her black blade ever break (it was used twice on screen I believe)

Raven's blades are no less sturdy than any other Huntsman's weapon. She used her red blade against Qrow just fine without it breaking. Similarly Cinder has never had any problems with her glass weapons shattering, not even when facing Ozpin prime. Its pretty clear that the weapons shattering so much in the Maidenbowl fight was to demonstrate the power of the Maidens rather than the fragility of their weapons. Much much like a epic hero out of a viking saga the fully powered Maidens are so strong that not even legendary tier weapons can survive the sheer force they strike with.

If anything Raven's Dust Blades and Cinder's glass creations is the best weapon for a Maiden to use, since both can be easily replaced.

Hazel theory:

So I got to thinking on something. Ozpin claimed that Hazel's Semblance is that he can "block out pain" and that it was the reason why he could handle juicing himself with five tons of Dust. However in this volume it was also explained and made explicit to us that Semblances can evolve and change, not just growing stronger but also more versatile.

And the incident with Hazel's sister seems to have taken place a long time ago, so how long has it been exactly since Ozpin was on good enough terms with Hazel to discuss the specifics of his Semblance? Likely a good long while I would wager, plenty of time for Hazel to change and for his Semblance to change with him. Especially considering that he has been working with Salem and doing her dirty work, which would both give him more combat experience and a very different life experience from what he used to have.

So... I've been thinking. What if Hazel's Semblance has evolved since Ozpin last met him? What if his Semblance is no longer to block out pain but instead something like "block out distractions" instead? I think that could be a cool expansion on the "feel no pain" concept (for example he could block out Emerald's illusions and stuff like that) but it would also be a great way to explain how he's managed to double-think himself into thinking its ok to kill children while also thinking Ozpin is a monster for putting children at risk of death and also how he's the only person in the show who is determined enough that he can recharge his Aura by sheer force of will.

Its because his Semblance doesn't just let him handle physical pain but also emotional pain. Feelings of guilt and doubt? They're distractions, block them out. Logic telling you that murdering that child will make you no better than the person you hate? Its a distraction, shut it out. Your sister wouldn't want you to blame Ozpin for a choice she made? That kind of thinking will prevent you from fulfilling the mission, shut that down hard.

Basically Hazel became so determined to let nothing stop him from getting revenge on Ozpin that he started shutting out all emotions and thoughts that could make him second-guess himself, at some point it became such a conditioned response that he no longer even notices that he's doing it. So when Salem comes to him and offers him an alliance the part of his mind that thinks she's a far worse monster than Ozpin gets shut out by his Semblance, when Salem has him go around murdering Huntsmen his poor abused conscience is tied up, gagged and thrown into a corner by his Semblance. Etc.

The only emotion Hazel doesn't block out is the pain and rage he feels from his sisters death. That he nurtures, and since its the only emotion he lets himself feel it lets him reach untinkable heights of single-minded determination that normal humans just can't match. Everyone has at least some conflicting interests, some level of doubt or hesitation, some distractions, some second-guessing of themselves. But not Hazel. He is pure unbridled (though misguided) will and its in large part due to his Semblance. In short:

[Discussion] Chibi Season 3, Episode 8: Kids vs Adults vs Pups
RWBY Chibi started early!
Winter you're like 25 at best, slow down on the youth shaming. Also wow, such shallow reads, yet she is not the only one to hold such views.

Enthusiastic gremlin Winter is amazing, oh gosh that range, that body language, those expressions!

Oh gosh Yang and Blake are being adorable!

What the fuck Zwei!?

Dancing Penny is cute!

Smug Penny is amazing.

Oh my gosh that was so cute and neat, aaaaaaahhh!

Ruby wavin bye to her cookie...Also massive Nuts and Dolts, so sweet XD

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IT WAS SO CUTE! The RVS Nuts and Dolts sails ahead today!

That is all.

I don't generally ship, but if I had to pick a character to be Ruby's love interest, Penny would probably be my first choice.

Honestly, I find N&D the most palatable Ruby ship because it involves two people with no clue slowly and gingerly groping their way to understanding what these weird squishy feelings are. It assumes Ruby's emotional immaturity that we've actually seen in the show, instead of having her have to take steps forward. (For the exact same reason, Lancaster is my second-favorite Ruby ship.)

It also fits into the idea that Ruby is more attracted to non-human things. Penny is a person, but isn't a human. So that fits in a lot more with what Ruby seems to admire most.
