RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Qrow Branwen is James Ironwood's oldest friend

This is the only line I question. While James embraces Qrow at the start of the volume I really doubt they're friends. What with the casual distrust they have for each other and the fact Qrow likes to pick fights while Ironwood has implied he'd execute Qrow for disobedience if he had the power. Which he now does come to think of it.

Fair, though to be fair I doubt Ironwood has many good or healthy relationships, or more, any so beggers can't be choosers, but that bit did feel presumptive. Though of the available cast I would say Qrow fills that role.

The sad thing is that while James might consider Qrow his closest friend I doubt he'd reach Qrow's top five if he'd even be considered a friend.

Yeah that scans tragically well. I think there must be (or have been) some camaraderie there, but yeah.

Qrow: Well he's betrayed me, which puts him in line with almost all my other friends.
Qrow: Hell if he tries to kill me I might have to invite him to the family reunion.

More seriously even before things went to shit I don't think Qrow ever saw James as anything other than an ally Ozpin vouched for. Ironwood is if nothing else too uptight for the sort of person Qrow is.

Raven: Hey I just put your life in danger I didn't actually plan to kill you cos if I did you'd be dead!

Seems plausible, though his fond "you idiot" in V3 does kinda give the vibe they have a little something, something.

Qrow is not fond of James' whole "stick up the ass" approach to things, but he does have aspect for the man and like Glynda knows there is good to him. But also like Glynda knows he can be full of shit at times.

Fair but tying into "the dogs in winter" ozpin would be the ox

Some people STILL think it would of made more sense if it was Weiss that got between Blake and Adam at Beacon and Argus. -.-
Do those people just... Not recall V2 where Weiss was established as being wholly aware her dad is shit, and also somehow forget Adam only ever used his brand as a tool for gaslighting Blake and had long since forsaken any kind of personal grievance for a blend of power monger fused with general genocidal supremacy?

I guess Adam working together with blatant racist like Roman Torchwick and giving him assignments to murder White Fang members who got cold feet (R.I.P. Tucson) was too subtle for some people.

I saw a person write out a scenario where it's Blake that kneecaps Mercury, and Weiss is the one who believes her, and that when Blake and Adam are having their moment it's Weiss that comes in for the save and loses a leg in the process.
Like, those 2 points alone just don't work.
here are the points I brought up
----
1 - Why would Ruby or Yang distrust Blake in this scenario? Blake had never shown a habit like this before so it wouldn't of been as believable to them as appose to say Yang doing it.
2 - This would remove Weiss from the Paladin fight, which is where she starts her Knight summoning
3 - Weiss is a lot quicker with more versatility then Yang on top of being more level headed.
4 - If we remove Weiss like this, then how is Ruby going to get to the top of Beacon Tower to unlock Silver Eyes?
5 - Even if Blake bolts in this scenario, I don't see it having as much as an effect on Yang as it did in canon, since Yang wouldn't be nursing a limb on top of her heart.
6 - This also takes a good bit of reason away for Yang to have her little character arc of healing, as well as leaves her with zero reason to not join RNJR when they first head off, which in turn effects their story as they trek across Anima.

That hurt my brain.

While I don't care for describing Yang as such, I do agree Weiss is vastly more versatile, she or Ruby would have, even if just as justifiably angry, had a better chance of taking down Adam simply because they are faster, can become immaterial or in Weiss's could just make a Glyph that flings him to the side.

I did a whole thing on this once before, but Yang is the worst possible match up for a charged Adam when someone is injured behind him cos she can't shoot, can't maneuver fast enough for him to not just kill them, can't use her Earth Wave. So many other characters would have more options than Yang in that scenario, Weiss her Glyphs, Ruby speed and becoming immaterial, Pyrrha or Glynda just flinging him to the side and so on, There's basically no way Adam doesn't just get dodged or launched out of the way and Blake evacuated and with the team less of a wreck she may even be talked into staying or at least sharing where she's going.

And that is actually another reason why YANG was the right choice for that scene.
1 - Blake's partner
2 - emotionally unstable at the moment
3 - had no knowledge or counter for Adam at the time

all that in mind creates a perfect storm for Yang to take the biggest loss of her life and give her something to learn from.

I think we both know my opinion on that arc so I'll just say I agree with number 1, 3, 2 sort of and the loss, but not exactly and not the last bit.

Also this makes me wanna share a thing about critics:

I mean their are instance of oppressed people accepting help of a different oppressor to fight their own.
Example Haiti slave rebels got supplies and some training from Spain. Which itself was another Nation that practiced extensive slavery which helped the Haitian cause it would hurt the French.

Another example is Gaddafi of Libya who sent supplies and support to the anti apartheid groups in South Africa and was treated as a friend by Nelson. But Gaddafi early in his reign funded an ethnic cleansing campaign to Arabized the Sahel region.

So Adam working with Torchwick and Cinder kinda make sense if real life precedent is anything to go by.

If by working with, you mean forced to serve under threat of death, yea.

Funny thing, right after the flashback ep in Volume 3, it occured to me that Adam could be a weak point in Cinders plan. I wondered if he'd get word to Blake, or sabotage Cinder in some way. But no, he was more then happy to unleash Grimm on civilian targets. He went along with that. He decided, all on his own, to screw over the cause he claimed he was fighting for. If he was merely scared for his own life, it'd be cowardly but understandable somewhat. But no, it was made very clear when he ran into Blake it was because he just liked killing and hurting people.
