RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

There's a question that's been bugging me, and maybe someone here can answer it.

Why is Salem barely bothering with secrecy anymore?

I get that she's mad, but I got the impression that her immortality and anonymity were her greatest weapons. If something went wrong, she could just blame a patsy and wait a few decades before she tried again. As far as I can tell, she didn't know Ironwood planned to expose her until she made it to Atlas.

Am I missing something, is this a headcanon I let get away from me, what?
More or less what Historyman said. It seems like everything starting at Haven/Beacon was Salem kicking up her and Ozpin's shadow war either with a new strategy or at least renewed intensity.

With Beacon still occupied and Jinn taken from Mistral she only has Atlas & Vacuo left that need to be toppled and or their relics claimed. But I think the threat of Ozpin making Ironwood come to his senses and their recent loss at Haven, Salem knew everything was at risk so I imagine she wants to force the issue now before the rest of the world can recover enough, let alone unify enough to try and stop her.

Thus she's taking action.

Oh also theories on somehting seen in the trailer:

Plus even with Atlas problems (Militarism, corruption, overreliance on technology that is either untested, prove to be too easily turn on them, or whatever.) it still the strongest of the Kingdoms, and so it makes sense you go for the big guy and knock them down before anything could be done. (Even the smallest chance of Ozpin getting Ironwood to see reason was too much of a chance. Plus two for one relics within reach.)

And...

The sea is a scary place, which is why Lovecraft had so much ocean and monstrous sealife horrors.

'The Ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time.'

Huh now I wonder if Fox costume is a form racial insensitivity? In the worst possibility akin to blackface to the faunas of Remnant. Which would not be the first of RWBY hero's of accidentally doing a racism to Faunas.

That and had Ironwood's plan worked, the world would have known about her anyways so she kinda had to go out into the open at that point.

Would love Salem to echo "Dont think, obey" at Cinder too. I can also imagine Emerald going to go great Cinder and Salem stops her with a look just to fully establish who's the real one in charge here.

Perfect Storm since the end of Volume 3.

The world is more divided than it was since before the Great War. The CCT has fallen. Ozpin host is a child.

In Mistral, Lionheart had the majority of Huntsmen killed in action leaving behind the bottom of the barrel.

Altas deep rooted problems are coming out in full strength with Ironwood double down on his worst traits and his obsession with only Atlas, the city, and not the kingdom or world no matter how much he talked the talk.

There's a quote from gen:LOCK that pretty aptly describes Salem's change of strategies:

Salem's minions (despite some setbacks here and there) have done an excellent job destabilizing the Kingdoms. However if Salem waits too long to capitalize on that weakness then eventually they will recover and make all the effort she put into getting this far for naught and force her to start all over again with Ozpin and the Kingdoms on high alert for a long time going forward. It might have been different if Ozpin had taken years to reincarnate again so that she could carefully dismantle the Kingdoms via proxies before he returned (like what seems to have happened in The Infinite Man) but with Ozpin back on the field and still no Relics in her hands Salem was quickly reaching the point where it might not be possible to achieve any of her true goals through subterfuge so she bet everything on taking the direct approach and smashing her enemies while they were too busy looking for hidden agents to notice the incoming avalanche.

It's a high risk/high reward play but already it is paying dividends, with her being on hand to retrieve the Relic of Knowledge before Oz can attempt to retrieve it and her presence ensuring that Ironwood will never come to his senses about Operation YEET.

Wait
Jellyfish Grimm? Giant Jellyfish Grimm? Could those possibly have a special ability that will let them drain power from the Atlas Hard Light theater shields?

I was thinking it could be a giant Seer Grimm. Give her the ability to make her own "Surrender or die" broadcast to Atlas.

Some analysis on the Salem Cinder scene from the trailer

That's certainly an interesting take from what little we saw. I think it's more likely that Cinder is being dressed down for her initial error at Haven, though. The one that led to Salem giving that "you only reach what you desire through me" speech back in V6.

Yuuuup. Those hard-light cells are just the perfect summary of Atlas. Flashy security that would be better served with a simple wall, and police brutality.

I am grudgingly forced to admit Hard Light security might be worthwhile for Hunter level prisoners given it held up decently well to the Leviathans fire breath but given they also have Jac inside it, it seems this is just standard rather than for specific elite threats so yeah, terrible use of resources, as is to be expected from Atlas.

Hard light should be the backup to solid walls. Same as how forcefields shouldn't be the only barriers on cells in star trek.

I wonder how they manage to contain Huntsmen. Chips in their bodies that somehow disrupt Aura? Super-Concrete and Super-Metal? Chemicals in the waters?

Unless they have guys who run in every 5 minutes and beats the shit out of prisoners to drain their Aura.

Then Nora be like 'so you're making it easy for me'.
If they know what her Semblance is they can just turn off the power. If they don't know her Semblance then that just falls into "Semblances can do a million and one things and you can't plan for all of them so just try to keep an eye on the prisoners".

I mean unless Glyphs or Atlas tech can replicate the effect of the DnD Dimensional Anchor spell there is no way to keep Raven behind bars for example. Would need to know her Semblance and keep her tied up enough to prevent her from opening a portal.
