RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

I wonder how it felt when james "notafraid" ironwood bumped into a wall when he was stumbling backwards in a daze from salem's hologram.

It offended him almost as much as someone suggesting he might not be right about everything.

I've mentioned it elsewhere, not sure if I have here, but I think those of us that acknowledge Ironwood has broken from the PTSD, pressure of his job, and so on might actually think better of him then his die-hard supporters. We offer some excuses for his actions. They declare things like abandoning the people of Mantle to die and shooting Oscar are careful decisions on his part. Which one is more monstrous?

New trailers here.

Honestly kind of disappointed we didnt get too much new here.
Other than Salem scolding Cinder for being too independent.

Actually a couple interesting tidbits now that I rewatched:
- Watts being a punching bag for a couple troops.
- Tyrian and Cinder both reach Salem. Thought there was a blood splatter behind Cinder but I think it's just part of Monstro's decor.
- Looked like Nora was in front of a cell. So maybe they will try and break Qrow out?
- Salem specifically says for the Grimm to bring "him". So Oscar's definitely in even more trouble.

It looks like Nora might be getting some focus this season.

I think this is the first time we've seen her use her Semblance since season 5.

It's not exactly news but the fact that they put November 7 as the release date in big bold letters in their flashy new trailer seems like a very solid confirmation that they're confident they are on schedule and won't have to push back the release date due to Covid slowing the production process down. Just 24ish days left.

Also we get a shot of the Mantle Crater in the trailer and this seems to confirm what the voting maps and glimpses of the crater seemed to indicate last volume: Namely that Mantle is more than just the city at the edge of the crater and that the parts of the city we focused last volume were the "nice" part of the city while the crater (which is by far the largest part of Mantle) is the slums. No wonder people in Mantle are getting ticked at Atlas.

Atlas uses Hard Light fields for their prison cells as seen in the scene where Watts is being subjected to enhanced interrogation (and Jacques' part in the story may not be over yet).

And we get something I've been hoping for but didn't particularly think would happen. Nora seems to have Cole McGrath style abilities to fuck up electronics with her Semblance by draining them of electricity. Alternatively she's short-circuiting them by overloading them with electricity she's generating but the former option seems more efficient. Yeah, a later scene of Nora shows yellow electricity flowing up her arm and into her body. I think she's draining the electronics. That confirms a theory I had that she might be on the stealth team because her Semblance is uniquely suited for disabling Atlas' overly tech dependent security systems.

Vine appears to be battling inside some kind of mini-tornado. Could be an indication that he will fight Penny at some point, since that type of wind is something we usually see with Maidens. Especially Amber.

At 0:36 when Cinder is gazing over Atlas seemingly from atop a mountain or atop Monstro there is some kind of massive purple streamers reaching into the sky from the ground on the left. Could be part of the whale, could be some new kind of Grimm or a spell from Salem.

Yeah, though that's mainly because by this point, COVID has been mostly covered, even with second waves in mind. If RWBY was premiering around the summer time, then it would end up getting delayed to some degree.

Except for leaving the civilians to die while he ran away. You know, the PART THEY DISAGREED WITH LAST VOLUME.

Before that became the issue.

"These rice paper cells we're keeping prisoners in are just too strong. How can we compromise our security even more?"

"I know, let's install doors that need a constant, uninterrupted supply of power, 24/7, to stay operational!"
To be fair I'm not sure if those are permanent holding cells or a temporary setup for interrogations. Watts seemed to be placed in a physical cell at the end of volume 7.

But yeah, Atlas' big weakness is it's crippling over-reliance on advanced technology. A big part of it's issues with exceptionalism comes from the unwavering belief that more advanced = better in all ways and then coming to the conclusion that Atlas is the best at everything because it has the most advanced technology.

Didn't hurt that this volume has been ahead of schedule all year. Last I remembering hearing is they're close to finished with writing v9 already.

Indeed, in Talk CRWBY to me they highlighted their increased experience, the added advantage of an ever expanding library of stored sounds, animation, models ETC and the fact a larger team is letting them finish their work faster and get ahead of schedule.

To be fair they seemed to give her more focus last volume too, though yeah I m loving comrade Nora so more of her rocks.

Oooh great insights there and further blow!

I wonder if the fleshy strips is also where Salem & Tyrian are seen?

That would also explain why Ironwood didn't want to use the Staff to lift Amity. Atlas would have crushed the crater slums.
Don't forget Mercury was also known to use wind dust when he first fought Yang, so it could be that the Ace Ops encountered Emerald, Hazel, and Merc...

Perhaps so that they could spare RWBY the trouble of dispatching them.

There's a question that's been bugging me, and maybe someone here can answer it.

Why is Salem barely bothering with secrecy anymore?

I get that she's mad, but I got the impression that her immortality and anonymity were her greatest weapons. If something went wrong, she could just blame a patsy and wait a few decades before she tried again. As far as I can tell, she didn't know Ironwood planned to expose her until she made it to Atlas.

Am I missing something, is this a headcanon I let get away from me, what?

Perfect Storm since the end of Volume 3.

The world is more divided than it was since before the Great War. The CCT has fallen. Ozpin host is a child.

In Mistral, Lionheart had the majority of Huntsmen killed in action leaving behind the bottom of the barrel.

Altas deep rooted problems are coming out in full strength with Ironwood double down on his worst traits and his obsession with only Atlas, the city, and not the kingdom or world no matter how much he talked the talk.
