RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Everything that happened during the 'RWBY' Volume 6 panel at NYCC 2018
Lindsay Jones (Ruby), Kara Eberle (Weiss), Arryn Zech (Blake), and Barbara Dunkelman (Yang) plus writer/directors Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross were in attendance in front of a massive crowd in Madison Square Garden. They took questions from the panel moderator and from fans, and hey even showed a brand new clip of the first episode.

The panel opened by showing a clip of the first episode from Volume 6. The clip opens on a train winding it's way through a snowy mountain range. Team RWBY and RNGR are in action fighting off winged bear Grimms.

It cuts to the White Fang hideout, where Adam has made his return. He wants his throne back but the rest of White Fang don't accept him. They still remember how he ran away from the last battle. Adam kills them and takes the throne. We also learn he's still mad at Blake for betraying him, and is holding a grudge.

The next scene showed RWBY and RNGR in a train station, preparing to leave for Argus. Qrow sends a letter to Atlas to explain what happened in the Battle of Haven. Blake and Ilia say their goodbyes. Ilia's going back to Haven to help Blake's family rebuild. The two share a hug, then part ways.

Son shows up and says that he is going back to his home. He wants to team up with his old crew, including Neptune, who shows up to hit on Ilia. Blake jokes that he is barking up the wrong tree. After everything that happened in Volume 5, Son decides he needs to become a better team leader. Blake decides she needs to be with her team. Blake gives Son a kiss on the cheek and rejoins Team RWBY.

After the clip, the panel talked about the upcoming schedule. A new RWBY manga is set for release in 2019, and will drop simultaneously in English and Japanese. The novel RWBY: After the Fall from EC Myers will tell the story of Team CFVY. It's set for release in Summer 2019

Rooster Teeth and DC Comics will team up to bring a new RWBY comic book series in 2019.

The panel also discussed some details from the first episode of Volume 6. If it wasn't already clear from the footage, RWBY will be exploring Argus this season. But that's not all.

"There are new themes that the show hasn't explored yet," said Dunkelman.

There are new Grimm too. Manticore and sphinx Grimm are introduced early in the first episode. Miles said someone on Reddit made the manticore for fun, and Rooster Teeth contracted them because the design was so good.

RWBY Volume 5 ended on a happy note for the gang, fans of the animated series know that probably won't last long. Volume 6 will see Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang together again. but with the looming threat of Salem still out there, how much time will they have to enjoy their reunion?

RWBY Volume 6 will release on Rooster Teeth First on Oct. 27.

What do you think will happen in the upcoming season of RWBY ? Are you more or less excited about it than previous volumes? Let us know in the comments section below.

Please tell me Ruby Junior is a working name and not what we're actually going to call the seven of them.

NYCC 2018 RWBY Panel Summary
Gray Haddock, Chad James, Miles Luna, Kerry Shawcross, Lindsay Jones, Kara Eberle, Arryn Zach and Barbara Dunkelman had a panel at New York Comic Con. They showed an early draft of RWBY 6x01, a new clip for gen:lock and the opening of gen:lock.
  • Lindsay said with team RWBY being back together a lot of the scenes feel like Volume 1 and 2 again.
  • Weiss has a red scarf and thighs apparently. They're not going to have a full costume change, but we might see some additions to costumes to accustom for colder weather.
  • Barbara mentioned that they will play with new themes in Volume 6 that haven't been done on the show and that she's very excited for.
  • The tone will get darker in Volume 6. Lindsay mentioned that, which means it might have something to do with Ruby.
  • Volume 6 will be action packed and a lot of different things will happen at different places all the time.
  • A lot of long standing questions will be answered.
  • Manticore and Sphynx Grimm are going to be in Volume 6. They saw someone doing a fan design of the Manticore Grimm on Reddit after they had the idea for it and thought about ditching the idea, but then they hired the artist for the Manticore Grimm the Sphynx Grimm and some other things as well.
  • Neptune might be back? I'm not sure if he was actually in the clip they showed at the panel or if it was just Arryn joking around.
  • Rooster Teeth and DC are going to partner on a series based on RT animation properties, the first ones being gen:lock and RWBY coming out next year, means RWBY and gen:lock are getting their own DC comics. Arryn got really excited about Blake and Catwoman now existing in the same universe.
  • gen:lock will premiere January 26th on RoosterTeeth.com.

@Mook I'm not sure who wins our bet then as Sun isn't coming, but given the cheek kiss I was right about them forcing that ship in Volume 6. Shall we call it a loss for both sides?

@Mook I'm not sure who wins our bet then as Sun isn't coming, but given the cheek kiss I was right about them forcing that ship in Volume 6. Shall we call it a loss for both sides?
Eh? What's this again?

[One Search Later]

Ok so the bet was:
That being said, one of the criticisms I can level at the show is how hard they've been pushing Blake/Sun despite them having no chemistry. There are many other shows I love that do similar things - in my opinion one of the low points of Jessica Jones is her relationship with Luke Cage, and they have sizzling chemistry compared to Blake and Sun. It's not Miles and Kerry's fault specifically, but more the fault of the cultural tropes they've ended up using for the characters. On top of that, Michael Jones is a very skilled voice actor for an amateur, round the office guy they're both friends with, and I can't see them cutting out his character for two or more volumes.

Given all of that, I do feel confident in saying that yes, he will be coming with them to Atlas, and yes, it will be mostly for more semi-shipping with Blake. I'd love to be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what's going to happen, based on past experiences with other shows and a basic glance at Roosterteeth as a company and RWBY as a cultural artifact.

This sounds like it calls for a friendly bet.

a) If Sun tags along to Atlas without his team I have to edit my avatar to include this jester cap to show what a Fool I am (eh, get it?)
b) If Sun stays behind at Haven or only travels with RWBY&co while they're in Mistral then your avatar must wear the jester cap.
c) If Sun follows Blake to Atlas but brings his entire team with him then we both wear the cap because clearly the whole world is mad if nobody in the CRWBY objected to adding that many superfluous characters. :V

Said hat wearing will last for the duration of Volume 6 or Volume 7, depending on which volume the Atlas arc truly gets started in (so if they reach Atlas midway through Volume 6 or earlier then that's the volume of silly hats while if they only reach it near the end of 6 or the start of 7 then 7 is the magic number). :)

I don't see any mention of there being no shipping moments at all in the bet. Here's the context from which it sprang:
I really don't get this. He can come back for the Vacuo arc sure but there's no reason for him to be present in the Atlas arc. They've already pointed out in the show that he has his own team that he should get back with and pretty much his only motivation for going with Blake was that he didn't think she should go up against the White Fang alone. They even made a big deal about him and Blake splitting when she went back to fight alongside her team and had him encourage her to go talk to them. He has no reason to stick around once he's sure that Blake is back ok and back with her friends. And Mistral really needs all the Huntsmen it can get after the culling that Salem did (plus the Dust embargo and the Grimm attacks and the headmaster dying, etc).

I hope you're right, but I wouldn't bet on it.

(As for a reason to stick around: he wants into Blake's pants.)

I don't think he's enough of a dick to ditch his team and his school just to get into Blake's pants. Especially since there's nothing saying he can't try to get together with her when the Kingdom isn't on fire.

The question is not 'is he a dick enough to' but 'are the writers basically heteronormative enough to push this despite it making no sense'.

The answer is yes. Yes they are.
The bet was always about whether or not the writers would push for Sun to go to Atlas with RWBY and co even though it made very little sense for him to do so. The shipping argument was largely incidental to that, its only relation being that some argued that Sun would go to Atlas so that the writers could keep shipping him with Blake. That clearly isn't what's happening here, Sun is not going to Atlas and is staying with his team, just as I predicted, he is also headed to Vacuo, which is only surprising in that he's heading there right away but since no one would be surprised by him showing up in the Vacuo arc anyway it makes sense that the writers clearly establish that he's going there ahead of time so that his presence won't seem like an asspull if he and his team pull RWBY and co's butts out of the fire later.

Even if the bet was purely about shipping this doesn't seem like a clear cut Black Sun victory. Apparently that scene was Blake kissing Sun on the cheek when saying goodbye for a very long time. And apparently that scene also had Sun saying that Blake didn't need him anymore. So Sun is not coming with Team RWBY, will likely not show up again for a very long time (we should get at least two volumes in Atlas itself, and Volume 6 seems to be a Mistral/travel volume so the Vacuo arc is a long way away) while Blake is going to be hanging out with Yang for just as long. It seems like you could just as easily argue that Sun and Blake are platonic friends instead of it being a shipping moment, and with Sun taking an exit stage left for several volumes its going to be a long time before any real romantic development can be done on that front, if there's ever going to be any.

That said I would like to wait for the volume to release before concluding our bet, its better if we can all see and compare the scenes before making any judgement on whether the kiss seems more romantic or platonic. Plus also while unlikely it is possible that Sun could suddenly re-enter the story to save Team RWBY or something, or that there will be several episodes in Mistral with Sun before the heroes get on the train.

Edit:
Also one of my arguments was that Sun wouldn't go to Atlas because he wouldn't ditch his team. Again from what I've heard of the trailer he apparently states that he's sticking with his team because he wants to be/learn to be a better leader. So I'm feeling pretty vindicated right now.

I think we get too attached to kissing=romantic, largely because it is true in some capacity and also because that's what media tells us. But chaste kisses, like on the cheek, are platonic all the time, especially between close friends or people you are close to in one sense or another.

I mean I'm supposed to be breaking from SV at the moment and watching anime so I'm not hugely inclined to watch a 15 minute video especially when you don't tell me what I'm supposed to be looking for. Keeping in mind that I noted that the media plays a role in this perception, can you summarize what point/argument the video makes that you wanted me to note/engage with?

I'm not sure how much trust I'd put in a third-hand rumor posted on Twitter. Let's wait and see what happens on the actual show.

Am I the only one who smells death flags here? They might as well have just said that Sun is only three days from retirement.

That's just spooky. I'm not sure how they're going to do it but by god they are going to try and I can't stop them.

Don't they always say the next season will be darker?

"There are new themes that the show hasn't explored yet," said Dunkelman.

Maybe this is taken out of context, but it doesn't sound very good. I'd much rather they take their existing themes and try to build on them. This sounds like throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.

Right, Sorry about that I only had a few minutes of free time beforehand so I could not do a proper explaination.

Basically it goes over the various elements of romantic plots in fiction and why we auto assume certain actions lead us to believe that certain people will become a couple and why they could or should work/don't work. It is quite informative.

@Broken Base I'll second the recommendation for Overly Sarcastic Productions' videos in general and Red's Trope Talk segments specifically for pretty solid analysis of common elements of fiction. The Romantic Subplots one in particular really hits on how romance in fiction can often come off as forced and just there to fill a quota if handled poorly.

Thaks for the rec! I have a few YTers whose catalogues I'm binging atm but I'll try to get back to this!

@Tython82- looking again I probably came across as snippy there, sorry about that. When you're at work I can kind of get it, for sure, it's just a massive pet peeve of mine. If you look at areas I'm a slight N&P junkie and it can be so aggravating when it comes up there. But my bad.

Adding this one as well since this topic kind of does show up in the RWBY fandom alot(Such as the whole how did Jaune/Nora/Ren pay for school), basically how does "Realism" effect the story

(Such as the whole how did Jaune/Nora/Ren pay for school),
Can't say that's ever struck as an issue. I assume Beacon does scholarships if you've got the skills, assuming that it isn't just outright free if you can pass the entry exam and government-subsidized. Lots of developed nations don't make people go into debt to pay for school like America does. :p Especially if the need for Huntsmen is as great as it's implied. I'm pretty sure that military academies don't charge their cadets tuition, because they need students to fill out the ranks.

Plus the students actively take missions and supply runs. It might be assumed that the students trade their skills to the school in exchange for education.

Care to explain your inane out of nowhere comment this time?
It has been confirmed Ilya will be staying behind in Mistral. Token gay character has appeared, checkmark ticked, tine to get rid of her. And before you go defending the decision by "character bloat" keep in mind that Ren and Nora will be coming along. And they have contributed so much in the last volume and have such interesting character arcs going on, amirite? Meanwhile Ilya could have actually had a purpose given her former life in Atlas and she might have to confront old demons while being able to give info about Atlas to the other protags. But nope, writing a character that happens to be gay is apparently beyond Miles Luna,so off she goes into the fridge.

Y'know, you can make this point without implying that the writers of the show are homophobic.

Plus, having Ilya in Atlas likely could have helped Weiss' character development significantly too. Smells like wasted potential to me.
