RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

So here's an honest question. What does Ozpin being the Wizard or reincarnating add to the plot? If we removed Oz and Oscar entirely, how would it affect the plot? You see, there's this big debate going on in the SB thread about whether or not Ozpin is justified in keeping things from our heroes. One of the big defenses of him is that he doesn't know anything of importance and that is why he is not sharing anything. But if that is the case then what is the point of him being there in the first place? I assume the reason RT brought him back was to tell the MCs what is going on but if he does not deliver that exposition them what is his purpose? What would be lost by removing him altogether and just having Qrow tell the cast stuff? Then you could easily explain him not telling our heroes everything by saying that Oz did not tell him everything. Instead of Oz being a reincarnating immortal, he was the latest in an ancient, Salem-thwarting conspiracy or something. There is a line in the second or third episode that calls Oz the youngest Headmaster ever, but that's not much of an achievement when the academies turn out to be only 80 years old and were founded by him.

He knows more about the maidens and likely wha tthey're capable of, given he originally gave the powers, I think. Likely also knows more about what the relics actually do/how to use them. Also Hazel wouldn't be on Salem's side if Ozpin wasn't around to beat up.

But he's not giving that information. In fact I'm 90% sure the reason he was knocked out at the end of v5 was so RT had a reason he doesn't just tell them everything. Which goes back to my original point: if Ozpin can not or will not deliver exposition, then what is the point of bringing him back? Nearly an entire volume was spent sitting in a room talking. If Ozpin did not exposit by now, then he never will.

It's effortless to give Hazel a different motivation. Hell, even most of the show's most ardent defenders will admit that his motivation literally makes zero sense.

It's possible he's simply 'waiting for the right moment'. Weren't people already complaining that Vol 5 was packed a bit too full of plot threads already?

It's the same reason Obi-Wan and Dumbledore don't tell the heroes everything in act one. It's not very good storytelling.

It's not act one. Act one ended two whole years ago. Given they left Haven and are headed to a third continent one could argue that v6 is the start of the third act.

And Obi-Wan did give Luke all the information during act two. Remember that Star Wars was intended to be a one-off, whjch is why several things don't hold up when the other two movies are taken into account. Dumbledore explicitly admitted he fucked up at the end of book 5 and spent all of book 6 and post-mortem in book 7 telling Harry shit. And even before that he told Harry important information as it became relevant. Oz does not have that excuse because they are fighting to save the world NOW and there is no more "let the kids enjoy their innocence" excuse like he had during the earlier volumes.
It's possible he's simply 'waiting for the right moment'. Weren't people already complaining that Vol 5 was packed a bit too full of plot threads already?
Yes, but you are missing the point. The complaints weren't about the talking. Well okay, they were, but the reason people were so against the talking is because nothing importamt was actually said. There are several times that Ozcar talks about unimportant shit that could be used to give actual information. Like him giving a vague statement that the Beacon Relic was well-protected. That doesn't matter.

Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked. We are moving away from my original point. That being, "If the writers go out of their way to not have Ozpin give exposition, then why bring him back in the first place?" And in that same vein, "Would his removal affect the main plot that much?" Him being the Wizard is neat, but it's ultimately window dressing. It doesn't add anything to the plot, because he doesn't exposit about any of it.

You've all given me a bunch of reasons why he hasn't said anything but you haven't answered my initial question. Why have him around if he doesn't do his intended job as Exposition Machine?

I mean really what hasn't he told them? Like they know about Maidens, Relic, Salem, and even his own past and powers. What is he holding back at this point?

I mean really what hasn't he told them? Like they know about Maidens, Relic, Salem, and even his own past and powers.
He hasn't told them anything about Salem. AFAIK they only know about her because of Tyrian, a villain. He hasn't told them anything about his powers. He hasn't told them anout the Maidens; that was all Qrow. All he has told them about the relics is that they exist. Not what they do or why it's so important to collect them.

What is he holding back at this point?
Everything? He has barely given them any scraps of information while expecting them to blindly follow him.

So I ask again, if he can not or will not provide exposition, what is the point of his continued existence and how would his removal dramatically change the plot?

I'm pretty sure he said outright who Salem was and what his connection to her is. Beyond that, well they know what the Maidens are, they know what the relics are and that it's important that Salem doesn't get them, and they know the Oz gets reborn every time he dies thanks to a cures given to him by the Gods. I'm pretty sure all the bases are covered. Anything else is likely not been said in order to generate tension and mystery for the story. They'll find out when it's most dramatic to find out.

Citation needed. To my recollection all he said was that he was cursed for failing to stop her. Which could mean any number of things.

Stop dodging the question. What is the point of Ozpin reincarnating if the show doesn't do anything with it? I think it is completely unnecessary and the removal of him being an immortal, reincarnating wizard would not affect the plot at all.

That's bad writing.

It usually means he was tasked with stopping her, failed and was cursed due to it. In my experience anyway.

I mean he was sort of needed to explain the Relics and he gives RWBY a level of legitimacy within the higher levels of power. No one trusts or likes Qrow because he's a drunken bastard, but Ozpin opens doors for them that otherwise wouldn't be open, but him being in Oscar's body means he's limited in how useful he can be in this capacity allowing for dramatic tension to be built up.

No it's not. There's a reason mystery writers don't give you the solution mid way through the book. Character's only learn things when the story needs them to. That's the function of stories. If they just dumped all the info up front there'd be no dramatic weight to the story. For instance if Ozpin showed up and just outright said what Salem is, where she comes from and where he powers come from then there'd be no mystery for the story. You'd already know everything and it'd ruin any mystique the character had.

You know what? I'm not playing this little game of red herring with you. Stop dodging and answer my original question. I'm not going to state it again; I've asked it at least 3 times already.

No you have not. Since you refuse to scroll upwards I will be magnanimous and ask it again. What is the point of keeping the character Ozpin around if the writers force him to not provide any plot-relevant information?

Now answer. And no changing the topic like you have been.

RTX London Panel summary

  • Panel hosted by Barb, Lindsay, Gray and Anna Hullum. No Miles and Kerry, they stayed in Austin.
  • The stream didn't get some slides, bummer.
  • RTX London news that got shown again: Blake anthology manga for November 12th, Yang manga still set for Q1 2019. Barbara again laments how Yang being last means she has to get used to waiting. Gray also mentions the Shonen Jump V1 and 2 adaptation and the CFVY novel. Amity Arena trailer (this actually did get shown on-screen… by the camera panning up to the projector), only difference was that the release date is now known. Rock Band/This Will Be The Day crossover.
  • Actual new news- a Qrow statuette. New Weiss crane game figure.
  • Gray confirms that Volume 6 will be exclusive to Rooster Teeth. Gray indirectly gives me a shoutout by saying that "Reddit picked this up in the wee hours of the morning." (thank the r/RWBY Discord for that find) Gray encourages people to head to RT.com as just watching there is the best way to support the show. Gray also confirms that subtitles will be ready for Volume 6. Other new features include offline viewing on the app for First members, Chromecast support and tapping to rewind.
  • Barbara makes a bad pun, Yang is worst girl and always will be.
  • Stream cuts to black. Discord tells me it's the RTX Austin Gen;Lock trailer, meaning I called that Gray would shill Gen;Lock.
  • Gray notes the usual spoiler rules- no downers, no spoilers.
  • "Will Neo's outfit be updated if she comes back?" The crew point out how either way they answer this it's a spoiler question so no comment.
  • Favorite personality traits about each of your characters? Lindsay admires Ruby's determination and positivity. Anna likes Raven's loyalty. Gray: "I like how at peace Torchwick is right now." More seriously, he likes Roman and Neo's dynamic on Chibi. Barb: "I really like both of her arms-" Barb's serious answer is that Yang is loyal and a great older sister to Ruby.
  • What fan art would you like to see? Gray likes Torchwick almost getting hit by a bus for RTX London. Barb wants to see the RWBY people as Marvel characters. "Ruby I don't feel so good!" Lindsay: "No, you're thinking of Pyrrha." Gray shouts out to the guy driving the Pyrrha car. Lindsay wants to see RWBY as Team Voltron.
  • With Grimm Eclipse, will Pyrrha have a new outfit alongside the Volume 4 updates? Gray doesn't know what they have planned for Pyrrha, not even enough to make a teaser joke.
  • If you could write a storyline for your character, what would it be? Lindsay wants a flashback to when Ruby and Summer got to hang out. Anna goes for Raven opening a bakery and making wedding cakes. She'd like to see something that develops Raven and Yang's relationship. Gray would write a Roman Lives AU where Roman's cane is a sword-cane and he cuts his way out. Barb would like to see Yang hitting the gym.
  • When are we gonna see Team Garbo in RWBY? (I think this is an Achievement Hunter reference) General joke answer.
  • If your character was a Faunus what would they be? Lindsay: "Makes sense to say corgi." Raven is a gimmee(?). Gray goes for a donkey since Roman is partly based on Lampwick from Pinnochio. Barb goes for a dragon.
  • How many books do you destroy coming up with color names? "It is a fun game."
  • Gray asks the panel what colors or myths they'd like to see? Lindsay goes for Thumbelina. Gray goes for plaid.
  • Will Grimm Eclipse add any more teams? It's something they want to do, but no details to tease with.
  • How much room to improvise is there? Gray: "About five foot square." Lindsay notes they have quite a bit of wiggle-room. Gray calls the script a "safety-net" that you have to use but if the cast has a funny idea and it doesn't need the cast coming back to re-record, they can probably include it.
  • Any other teams getting a book, like say, the rest of SSSN? Gray notes that RWBY are in the CFVY book, some other teams might make a cameo.
  • Can animals get Auras and Semblances? "Probably not?" The safe answer is "stay tuned," since Gray doubts we're done seeing crazy animal stunts like the Zwei fireball.
  • Will the Blake Ilia conversation where Ilia comes out be addressed again? Gray can't answer since confirming or denying is either way a spoiler. He's glad that people latched onto Ilia. Also, is Sun gonna change his shirt- Lindsay: "NO. If anything he's gonna take it off. Next question!"
  • What's the name of Raven's sword? Gray: "I'm trying to come up with a mom joke." Gray doesn't know. They decide to make it up. Barb goes for "Black feather," then "red feather." Anna wishes she knew.
  • Ruby meets the Nomad of Nowhere. Can Crescent Rose outrun Ruby? Gray suggests that the Death Battle guys should make it. Lindsay says they'd probably start dating. She also thinks Crescent Rose would kick Ruby's ass.
  • Favorite line in Chibi? Barb likes when Qrow flies into the window in season 2. "And all the puns!" Gray doesn't have a specific one, but he loves Roman's dynamic with Neo. Lindsay goes for "Heh, it's a butt."
  • If you could have a Semblance of your own? Lindsay: The ability to control bowel movements. Anna: Her son brought up the ability to take things out of square without his hands like tilting paintings. Gray asks if he can just steal One For All from MHA. Barb would take Yang's Semblance.
  • Would the gang have been able to just leave the Relic in the Vault? Gray doesn't know, it's hard to talk about the rules of Vaults since there could be spoilers.
  • What's the deal with the show's amputation fetish? Someone's always losing a hand in Star Wars so they had to up their game. It's probably just to show stakes and consequences.
  • If you could cross RWBY with another anime, what would it be? Gray, immediately: Hamtaro. Lindsay: MHA. Anna: Yuri on Ice. Barb: Attack on Titan where RWBY characters are the Titans.
  • Barb, if you had to ship Yang with anyone who's not Blake, who would it be? Yang/Yang or Yangbang.
  • If you could ask your character any question, what would it be? Gray: "What's it like on the other side? Why are you so stylish, why are such an ass?" Anna: "What are you thinking?" Lindsay: "How did you not know that those people who were in their thirties weren't students?" Barb: "What's your workout regime."
  • Shower-thought question: If you're a fox faunus and eat a rabbit faunus, is that cannibalism? Probably, yeah. Wouldn't be looked on too favorably. Anna: "Has anyone seen Velvet?"
  • Hardest line to say in the booth for comedy or serious purposes? Lindsay: Finding out how they'd laugh or cry. Anna: "I'm sorry." Gray: Torchwick's last line. Barb goes for the Vault scene as well. Barb also hates doing effort sounds for Yang- they've learned to do dialogue and efforts separately since Barb's throat gets fucked up.
  • Gray, could RWBY get some more merch on Amazon Prime? When they get an opportunity to add more stuff to Prime, sure. He's pretty sure RWBY's not on Netflix ATM but they're working on getting it out there as much as they can.
  • (Gray don't interact) If you could make a Chibi episode, who would it be about? Lindsay would do a Luther parody with Idris Elba. Anna: Baking was still on the mind, so "Evil Cookies." Barb would make a skit of Yang interacting with Zwei's pet friends. The whole episode would just be Yang getting attacked by cute animals.
  • I zoned out, sounded like a question about how Yang inspires the crew: General agreement from Gray and Barb that Yang is an inspiring character.
  • If you could take a song from the soundtrack and change the genre, what would it be? Lindsay would probably make This Will Be The Day a swing number. Anna goes for polka. Barb would make I Burn into heavy metal.
  • What other RWBY games would you like to see? Gray: "Dating sim." (someone send him Summer Rose Court) A cooking game would be neat of Ren teaching you how to make pancakes. Lindsay would like an MMO. Anna backs up the dating sim. Lindsay: "Is Torchwick an option?"
  • If you could crossover your characters with any character, who would it be? (someone already asked this and swapped it out for anime JFC) Barb: Yang with Rapunzel since Pun's in the name already. Anna is thinking of Princess Anna for no good reason. Lindsay goes for Hellraiser. Gray doesn't have a good one off the top of his head but can't get the image of Roman swinging around Vale like Spider-Man out of his head
  • If you had a RWBY-style weapon, what would it be? Barb goes for the gun-gun that just shoots other guns. Gray will take the cane. Anna goes for Yang's gauntlets. Lindsay goes for a mech-suit baby holder that would let Iris be her co-pilot. Gray hopes someone photoshops Yang over Henry Cavill's gun-arm reload from Mission Impossible
  • If you could go back and change anything about the past volumes: Lindsay would re-record Volume 1. The list is infinite for Gray but he's made peace with all that, no sense looking back and he just accepts that each volume is a product of its time.
  • Are we gonna get to learn more about STRQ? Gray: *affirmative sound in his throat*
  • Non-canon Grimm that would be terrifying if it got made? Barb would be scared of a sloth Grimm. Gray: Shark Grimm would be hard to make scarier. Anna: Crocodile. Lindsay: Spiders, but also hippos.
  • Does Pyrrha survive the snap at the end of Infinity War? "I'm guessing that people who are already dead won't be killed again."
  • Who would you like to add as a RWBY rep for Cross Tag Battle? Zwei. Gray's seen enough fanart of Torchwick in a fighting game that he'd buy it, and his martial art is based in reality and would be cool to show up in a game. Gray also mentions that Mori is fond of Penny. Anna feels obliged to say Raven. Lindsay goes for Qrow as the resident Drunken Master.
  • Last question. Would you be interested in an audiobook for After The Fall? Probably yes, can't imagine that they wouldn't if they got the chance.
  • Holy shit an RTX Panel that didn't have "What's your favourite ship?" I'll be damned. Bummed that we still don't have any form of response to the Chibi season 3 mess.

Matt Hullum's post on RWBY Volume 6 being exclusively on the Rooster Teeth website

matt's Post

RWBY Volume 6 is coming up, and we couldn't be more excited. The show has changed in so many different ways since it premiered in 2013... but that's not the only thing that's changed.

We have decided that RWBY Volume 6 will live only on Rooster Teeth. It'll be available for FIRST members for one week, and then totally free to watch thereafter.

Before you freak out, we want to explain exactly why we are doing this. It wasn't an easy decision – we know a lot of you enjoy watching on YouTube, and it's how a lot of you even found RWBY in the first place. But if you love this show, the best way to support RWBY is to watch it on Rooster Teeth.

YouTube has evolved as a platform, and as we grow as a company we've found that YouTube isn't the right place anymore for some of our content. We won't stop putting shows on YouTube because it's still important to us in many ways, but in the end we don't control our own destiny when we put our shows somewhere else. Just one example: many of our videos, even some that are five years old, are getting demonetized for reasons ranging from inappropriate language, to using "unusual capitalization." Heck, even a video we made ABOUT how to make a successful YouTube video got demonetized.

We've always believed that we should make the content we want to make, but by doing this, we take a hit by continuing to focus on YouTube as a platform, as it does not benefit our growth. We are unable to make money on videos for reasons beyond our control, and we want to stay true to what RWBY and our other shows should be.

We and an amazing team of engineers have also invested a ton of time, energy, and money in our own platform to make the viewing experience as good on Rooster Teeth as anywhere else. And along with RWBY's release this fall, we'll also be unveiling some much-requested features on Rooster Teeth, including the following:

  • Closed-captioning support for RWBY Volume 6, and captions for other major new animation releases coming soon after

  • Chromecast support

  • Tap to rewind and fast-forward

  • And last but not least, in-app video downloading for paying members
Pretty cool, huh? And just in case you missed it up there, watching videos onRoosterTeeth.com and our mobile apps is COMPLETELY FREE. RWBY will be available COMPLETELY FREE to watch on Rooster Teeth one week after the premium release.

This means that a week after the premiere on October 27th, you can watch RWBY on Rooster Teeth without even signing up. And you want to know the best part? THIS is what helps support our show. Plus, there's no better place to watch RWBY than with the biggest RWBY fans in the world, right?

We are so excited to bring you all home, and to kick off our 6th volume of RWBY in a huge way. We couldn't do this without your support, so please join us (on RoosterTeeth.com and the apps) this fall for the premiere!

Will quality still be good for the exclusiveness?
Remember Bravest Heroes doing the same stunt and the art dropped when they outsourced.

They're not at all reliant on Youtube, so I wouldn't bet on it.

If youtube is giving them trouble and demonetizing videos for random reasons, then moving off seems like it makes sense to me.

Barb would make a skit of Yang interacting with Zwei's pet friends.

They're not at all reliant on Youtube, so I wouldn't bet on it.

If youtube is giving them trouble and demonetizing videos for random reasons, then moving off seems like it makes sense to me.
Their pick is better since RT unlike vrv is accessible to fans worldwide.
