RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Definitely biased af here, but the AMA also said they'd give more attention to Ruby next volume. I'm totally okay with this because I feel like WBY's personal issues were both more important and took up more screentime in general. We really haven't seen Ruby come to terms with Pyrrha dying or Penny getting torn to shreds (I won't be surprised in the slightest if another Penny shows up in V6 since they're going to Atlas).
I have said it before and I will say it again, if Penny shows up again I want her to use this outfit:

Alt Penny Polendina

I can dream dammit!
(also the writers/staff have picked up fan work before so it's not completely outside the realm of possibility)

It'd be about damn time they do something with Ruby. She's supposed to be the mainest of main characters but so far she's been feeling like a secondary character in Weiss, Blake and Yang's far more interesting stories. Heck even Jaune occasionally feels more like a protagonist than her. And I can only hope, but it'd be nice if they finally add some depht to her character...

Other things I'd like to see:
  • Where is Winter? I'm not going to watch v4 again just to confirm but I have the impression that Weiss only chose to leave for Mistral because she thought her sister was there. So, where is Winter and what has she been doing all this time?
  • Less fighting, more talking. My two favourite moments in v5 by far are Weiss and Yang's conversation in ep8 and Yang and Raven's in the last episode. It's clear to me the crew doesn't have the skill to re-ignite the spark that got RWBY going in the early days, so it's my opinion they should stop fighting a losing game and just change the paradigm into something they can be more comfortable with.
  • Not Penny, please. Dead characters should stay dead.

... meanwhile, she remains the only one it makes sense to have return in some form.

Depends on your headcanon. Mine includes souls, and Penny's was lost. Bringing her back but making it clear she's not the same by giving her a sense of "otherness" could be fine, though I'd rather not.

Mine does as well, but it was created by dint of her being an intelligent, self-aware AI. Once reactivated, it will remanifest. She has all the memories.

Given RT's track record when it comes to bringing characters back from the dead, this is probably what's going to happen... if it happens at all.

A completely new Penny with none of the V1-3 memories would be a pretty good gut-punch to start V6 out with though.

I'm under the impression that Winter is still doing the same thing she's always doing. CRWBY explained that she was never supposed to be in V5 to begin with.

Agreed about less fight/more talk. Although they want to do better for V6, I'm invested enough in the characters that there could be a whole volume of no fights and I'd still watch it.

About Ruby: I feel like we might get a better explanation on the whole Silver Eyed Powers thing next volume, maybe some more info on Summer. They said she'd be getting more conflict in V6 as well.

I agree. It'd be a great reminder that Penny was nothing more than a machine. Hell, make multiple Pennies show up, try to break Ruby's psyche in half.

Wait this isn't that kind of show.

See, if they introduce multiples, I would think that it'd just be a matter of time before one of them 'wakes up' as the original, which would be annoying. Not that they wouldn't do that with just one, but I'd rather the didn't do that at all. It would be more interesting if Ruby had to befriend the new one. Hopefully it would end better, but it shouldn't just be the original.

Winter was in Mistral, but all Atlas personnel were called back when they closed the borders, according to Vernal in V5C3

I remember something like that (and I'd hardly call it big and dramatic), but at the time I dismissed it as a bluff. The statement didn't make sense to me for various reasons, first and foremost being how would Vernal know? Winter was essentially implied to be a scout, a job that necessitates a certain degree of discretion and not a whole lot of visibility, and Ironwood would be smart to keep his specialist in site to keep an eye on things. So when Vernal revealed that the "Atlas personnel" was not only visible enough for a bunch of bandits to notice, but that Ironwood chose to remove his eyes and ears from Mistral, my reaction was something along the lines of "pfft yeah sure that's dumb, you're just trying to scare Weiss." And so I kept on waiting in vain for Winter to appear... :(

Don't underestimate the Chuuni Tribe's intelligence network.

(A little bird told them.)

You know, we don't actually know aura comes from the soul. I mean, that's what all the characters believe, but for all that's supposed to be uncertain about auras and semblances, it's also possible all this soul stuff is just a belief system. Maybe people want to feel special. Maybe it all started with one of those things the cool kids call a noble lie.

Basically what I'm saying is Penny can totally come back, 'cause maybe no one actually has a transcendental spiritual essence.

I am unsure I agree given the Aura transfer machine, but its not impossible.
I came up with a pun a little while ago and had to share it:

You know what Yang's best thing about her gauntlets are? The fact that they are shotpuns.
Amazing :D

Penny in my opinion still poses a very large question though. Where did they get the Aura that was put into Penny???? Because there are so many questions that alone brings up.

The two most prominent theories I know are:
A: Transferred from her 'fathers' dying/comatose daughter.
B: Self generated by virtue of AI having souls.

there's a spin-off game for fuck's sake
You are aware that the game was actually a fan's passion project that roosterteeth decided to buy out?

*Thanks to all of your support, RWBY: Grim Eclipse has been picked up by RoosterTeeth! I can't express how grateful I am to everyone for giving me this opportunity. As such, I'm unfortunately going to have to take down the game's download link since because pickles.

Well I think that depends on whether one considers the soul mystical or not, as in RWBY it may just be another fact of life.

Eh... I've always felt the soul by definition is something too complex and sublime to be anything mundane, but now I'm slipping away from actual RWBY discussion, so I'll just reiterate that I like this idea simply because it might mean we'll see Penny again.
