RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

New RWBY Chibi out for FIRST members now.
I did not expect a Chibi Car(d)in. He does have the qualifications for evil minion though.
Evil Chart of Evil is very evil. And also confusing.
Chibi Cinder is incredible. "Oh right, I keep melting them.":lol

Taiyang is back, and just as good as before. Age: Cool.
Ruby and Yang are experts at dating sites.
Qrow in a Speedo.:o
What's the name of this ship?:p

According to the chart: Sunburn.

;)

Lonely Huntsman profiles from Chibi S3E2 (images in spoilers):
No larger image, unfortunately.

I've watched it. The later episodes are better but I don't mind it. Ruby's somewhat more worldly now and Cinder is a GREAT villain

Here's the thing though.

Adam sliced through Yang like a 1000 degree knife through butter.

Would that mean he could solo the FF7 party?

Nah. I mean, Materia would make things harder for him (note the Yang vs Tifa fight really focused on HtH, with her being materia-less), and Cloud's got some advantages Yang doesn't, like a sword to block with, or omni-slash (and Cloud's on another level than the other heroes, stat wise)..

It also depends on which party you're talking about. Everyone? Hah, no. A team of three? Maybe the ones least suited to taking him on, but Cloud/Cid/Yuffie would beat him no problem.

I'd bet no, because we've never seen Adam fight a peer opponent without his Alpha Strike. Which gives me reason to suspect he's not above the curve outside of that.

I'm also not convinced Yuffie won't somehow steal the sword out of his hand. Somehow.

Yeah that's the thing about Adam, in most battle he's had some sort of advantage when threatened by anything other than mooks:

Spider bots: Throws Blake at it and hides behind her.
Blake: He's her abuser and he has a massive psychological hold on her.
Yang: Had no idea what his Semblance was and was trying to save her possibly critically injured partner.
Sienna: Thought Adam was trying to cow her into stepping down and he attacked by surprise.

Adam's actual record doesn't make him look great, consisting mostly of no names, mooks and people he took by surprise.

Take away his advantages and he's likely not all that special.

Another thing is how he struggled with a spider bot and needed to use his ultimate special attack Semblance to take it out while Oobleck is shown to casually oneshot Paladin after Paladin after Paladin with regular attacks in Volume 2. Or how Cinder casually makes him his bitch after she stole 1/2 of Amber's power but did not dare pick a fight with Qrow despite outnumbering him 3-1 and only needing to kill a helpless coma patient that he would have to protect in order to win. All in all the signs point pretty clearly at Adam being pretty far below proper Huntsmen even if he does seem to be above the level of most Students.

I actually read some of RWBY fanfic called resurgence. Some of the elements in there were pretty good (Cinder's backstory is revealed that she had been teammates with Glinda. Unfortunately when they were on a dangerous mission Glinda tried to press on even though it was obvious that they were outgunned. End result is that Glinda's sister died and Cinder went KIA presumably, though Salem saved her).

Hell the reveal of what the Grimm are is actually pretty cool. Turns out that many years ago Humans came to earth in a starship called the Elyiusm which is as big as a city. Elysium crashed and caused a massive cataclysm, which decimated the planet. Unfortunately this badly hurt the Grimm's food supply (Dust is supposed to go to the netherworld of the grimm which would allow them to feed and fuel their netherworld). When humans tried to survive they started harvesting dust.....which in turn damaged the grimm's food supply.) So it turns out that humans have been unwittingly destroying the grimm's food source with their actions. In the end Salem is beaten and they manage to restore the combined power of all the maidens over the centuries to the netherworld, which will satiate the grimm for a century. NOW they have to find a way to move away from using Dust.

It was a pretty good plot twist in that you're led to believe that Grimm were the invaders....when nope it's the other way around. It even avoids falling into humans being evil when Ruby acknowledges that yeah we have sins but we can change.

Didn't Winter point out how those Paladins were prototypes and were thus not as powerful as they could be. Which we later saw in the battle for Beacon just how good they were. Plus Oobleck was fighting on a moving Train so one good hit that dislodged them from the roof of the train would be more then enough to take them down since they would have fallen and hit the ground at high speeds

Kind of hope Volume 6 has some scenes like this:

It doesn't have to be that exagerated but it would be nice to get some visual reminders that the guns RWBY and co are using are actually powerful.

God that sounds terrible.

Not as powerful as they could be. Considering that these were the new top of the line mechs that Atlas were bragging about I see no reason to assume that the older model of Spider droid was significantly superior to even the Paladin prototypes which were pretty damn impressive on their own. Even without the whole moving train thing Oobleck was clearly handling those Paladin's with ease, casually throwing them into the air with his regular attacks and being so stupidly fast that they had no chance of touching him. In comparison the Spider droid tags Adam multiple times and is presented as a serious threat to him and Blake.

I thought it was a nice twist. You're led to believe the grimm were the EVIL INVADERS when nope. It's the other way around. That was a nice curveball.

That was pretty cool. In any case Cinder's background (That she almost died because one of the teachers was a careless idiot) gave her some pathos even if she's a monster.

Also Ruby herself does have potential; she's a good kid who wants to be a hero but can be insecure (she's the youngest in the class and so is looked down on) and immature. Weiss may be a stuck up bitch and rather childish but she isn't wrong to point it out. A good writer can easily have Ruby keeping her idealism but growing more mature as the series progresses like Luke Skywalker or Harry Dresden.

That just sounds dumb.

"Oh these soulless monsters have been violently devouring innocent people alive for literally no other reason than that they want to for thousands of years but its ok because apparently humans were space invaders several thousand years ago and therefore they're the real monsters."

Its a lame, predictable and just plain stupid "twist" that simply doesn't make sense or work on any level.

It's more "we invaded and have been consistently destroying their food supply while we were at it so they're constantly on the edge of starvation." Even if it wasn't intended that makes sense.

Also Ruby DOES have potential as a heroine. Take Luke Skywalker. By the end of the story he's more cynical but still has a sense of idealism.

Oh god just please stop. First of all this isn't the fanfiction thread so your recommendation has absolutely no place here. Secondly the more you try to make this story sound good the more I start hating it so just stop. I didn't even ask or talk about Ruby being a heroine in that story but apparently she's so badly OOC that you felt the need to specify that she could potentially be heroic which is not exactly a ringing endorsement of the story.

Fair enough. I'll stop.

But I was talking about Ruby in the show proper not the story. She's obviously based on the idealistic hero archetype and yes she's rather immature in season one. She seems to have been ditching that though in later seasons

Sorry if that wasn't clear

Good insights, language aside XD

Honestly I think a lot of Adam's success can actually be tied back to three things:

1. An admittedly powerful Semblance that makes him look a lot stronger than he is provided he opponent doesn't know about it.
2. Having sponsors much stronger, smarter, more well equipped than him.
(Adam didn't make the White Fang successful, nor did he seem to be a main strategist, he and Blake were seemingly in Vale to rob a train and then leave (A mission he was screwing up by blood lust) Sienna Khan made the strategies and did the leading, and later he had Cinder telling him what to do, giving him money, supplies, having Roman lead robberies and basically doing all the work. He did pull of the coup, but without Cinder he likely never could have isolated the Vale branch, boosted its number or made his attack on Beacon look good or succeed and even then he had to lie about who killed Sienna)
3. Competent cohorts, whether it be Blake protecting him from the spider droid, or the Albain brothers spinning lies, Adam has very competent allies who helped him accomplish his goals, while this is true for everyone to a degree, Adam seems especially dependent on them, without Blake he'd be crushed, without the brothers he never would have gotten even a foothold ion Menagerie and they were plotting to betray him if need be anyway.

Ultimately, I imagine Adam is a decent fighter, with a strong Semblance and was fortunate enough to be deemed useful/good by people more competent than him or who offered skills he desperately needed to look like more than just a decent sword arm with a neat trick.

Wasn't the whole killing of Sienna and blaming it on humans meant to drive recruitment numbers to his cause or at least to make his cause look more legitiment. Cause that's actually pretty smart on his end. Now all his other issues I can agree with.

I don't think it was intended to drive recruitment, at least not immediately, but it was intended to make her a martyr and seemingly to justify his attack on Haven and quell those like Sienna who wouldn't support his actions.

I won't deny there is some cunning to it, but I felt it was important to note he seemed to only got into a position to do that thanks to Cinder and Salem's sponsorship.

It might get some recruitment, but much more to make the existing White Fang loyal to him.

I think Adam is a fairly strong fighter sans semblance- note how Blake thought chasing after him, even together, was a bad idea- but while skilled, Blake knows him well enough and has gotten good enough to predict some of his moves. On the whole, he's probably very good at getting one-hits, and he leans into that.

Yeah, given he felt he couldn't replace Sienna legitimately, thus implying the majority wouldn't have supported his attack on Haven, Adam, seemed to want to use her death to motivate them and get them into lockstep with him.

Oh I wasn't trying to say eh's a bad fighter, save when he's enraged, merely that he's not exactly excelling beyond the norm and he's, as you noted, very reliant on his one shot Semblance as well as surprise attacks, that just make him look a lot stronger than he really is.

Indeed. And if you kill a lot of stuff in one shot, that does make it easy to not grow other aspects of your style as much as you should.

Yang's semblance is pretty similar but with more drawbacks (he gains power from successful defense, her from taking damage), and she *still* had problems with over-reliance.
