RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

[FIRST] Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together
Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together is up for FIRST members.

Yang clearly has abandonment issues, and we get some quality time with she and Weiss.

Ilia had/has a thing for Blake, and is also crazy. The Belladonnas are under attack, and who knows if Blake will be able to get back to them in time to save them.

Ghira is a badass.

We learn more about Yang, more about Weiss and more about Ilia.

Weiss and Yang have both been lonely, in different ways. Their family weren't there and they had to learn to deal with it. A nice call-back to the White trailer.

We also learned that Blake mattered a lot for Ilia, a lot more than just a friend. The pink was cute.

Oh f**k! Shit is going down guys. Massive death flags for Ghira.

Welp, RWBY community. You finally have your LGBT character/representation that you've all been asking for.

"I was always jealous of the way you looked at him... I wanted you to look at me that way. But we can't always get what we want!"

-Ilia Amitola

We were wrong, Blake is the harem protagonist. Not Jaune.

Yang's shakes aren't PTSD, they're suppressing her rage. She's lost all control of her anger management.

Cat Mom got a gun!

First Batman Faunus and now Spider-Woman Faunus. At least the webs come out of her palms.

Holy shit Ghira went full badass at the end

to be fair, i get the feeling that if Blake would have been in a relationship with Illya she would have been a bit healthier than with Adam...

So... I really liked this episode in a lot of ways. I also didn't like it in one big important way.

Things I liked were the actual Ilia reveal scene (in terms of the dialogue and the framing and acting and stuff), Ghira fighting, the whole Yang and Weiss discussion, and Blake bringing backup. Oh, and nice setting stuff like the spider faunus and the ornate semi-ceremonial gear of the Belladonna guards in comparison to the more workmanlike White Fang weapons.

The issue I have is... pretty obvious. It's great that there's finally a confirmed LGBT member of the cast, especially one who's an awesome complex character like Ilia. However, making her basically be a villain because of teh gays for Blake is pretty... I don't want to say homophobic, because I don't think it is, but it's pretty backwards and irritating at best. I just wish RT could've made someone else obviously gay as well to balance this out a bit, or done something that makes it less 'jealous lesbian ruins heterosexual girl's life' trope. Cause... ugh..

That's the complete opposite of what I saw; Ilia's a villain because she's been indoctrinated by a cult into becoming a violent fanatic, she just also happens to be gay.

'Ilia being a villain because she's gay for Blake' is a surface-level interpretation that ignores everything else about her character arc besides that one line.

Ilia had solidly established motives well before this revelation ever came out.

From where I look at it, yes, Ilia resents Blake, and part of it may be jealousy over unrequited feelings and Blake being with Adam, but more of it seems to be over Blake leaving the White Fang, abandoning their methods, and acting as though she has the right to say that what the White Fang is doing now is wrong, while their race is still abused and exploited. Her sexuality means very little in this situation.

Thank god Blake was smart enough not to walk straight into the possible trap without actually asking Sun to be there.
The Belladonnas are not going to die easily it seems.

I had your same immediate reaction. But just a reminder she's no more motivated by her attraction to Blake then Adamis motivated by his attraction to Blake.

I know, which is why I said it wasn't homophobic just - irritating and a little upsetting that their first confirmed gay character is in a lot of ways 'female Adam, aka female abusive psychopath' when lesbians already have a lot of problems with that kind of portrayal of them.

There are a lot more straight guys in this show than lesbians. When there's only one character of a specific demographic, things that might otherwise not raise an eyebrow start to.

Let's start with the stuff I loved.
That heart to heart between Yang and Weiss was amazing. We got more background into Weiss's home life. I mean, we all knew Jacques was a scumbag but the fact that he outright admitted to marrying into the family because of the name just really rubs it in. The fact that he slapped Weiss in volume 4 for bringing it up really shows that he doesn't see himself as in the wrong. What is love in the face of lucrative business opportunities and pedigree amiright? /s

Yang's abandonment issues are addressed again and its interesting that she said that 'Summer left' instead of 'Summer died'. I'm now having flashbacks to Red Like Roses. It's nice to see this side of her and I hope it remains a part of her character as she either grows past it or suffers because of it some more.

And man oh man that entire scene with Illia was literally a checklist for asshole antagonist. Greater Good? Check. No one's innocent? Check. I loved you and you didn't return my feelings? Fucking check. The community is not gonna like that last one. I honestly don't care but people are gonna be people. Also I'm gonna have to agree with Blake here. In what fucking bizarro world do you live in that you actually believe that fear replaces hate? Fear is just gonna cause more hate in the end unless you plan on just enslaving or killing everyone human...which is what they think they can do.

Now for the bad stuff. Where's that post I made...ah, here it is.

Aura is starting to become something that works as long as its convenient to the story?

Seriously though, the ending action sequence left so much to be desired. Why were those two White Fang standing in the open while firing on someone behind cover? And seriously, is it really that hard to unlock what amounts to a personal barrier against harm? Kali and Ghira were the only highlights of that scene. Everything else was mediocre.

Blake was kind of a disappointment. She's meeting someone whose basically an enemy at night in a quiet part of town. She draws her weapon when said enemy appears before her. Enemy very clearly makes a signal to start an ambush. She doesn't activate her aura and she doesn't react in time.

Last thing by the way. You've just been shit stomped into floor by some asshole bat dude. You're pretty sure you hear footprints behind you and you probably realize that you're in the middle of an ambush. Do you try your best to shake off the pain and activate your aura before swinging your weapon or attempt any attack at all? Or do you stand up and say "Wait!" before you get tied up? Similar to my gripe from the Sienna episode, the end result could have been the same but the process of getting there could have been so much better than what we got.

Yeah, when Ilia said that I was thinking "that's not how it works, idiot". Fear is part of why people would hate someone.

Besides, fear is the last thing you want, because the end result is a Grimm attack.

It seems to me that Ilia is blinded by her hatred and by Adam's teachings.

In regards to the Illia's ideolgoy thing:
Ilia's views on fear tie in well with but are an increasingly extreme version of what Sienna Khan practiced (Which Blake noted was working). Fear generally doesn't destroy hate, but it can overpower it, if a bigot fears retribution for indulging then they are less likely to do so, after all. Its just Adam's gone well past fear and into conquest and slavery and Ilia's basically just desperately trying to justify herself because she can't see a good option.

lol after I watched V1-V3 as they came out, I marathoned it all with my mum. Sometimes she asks if there's any more but I always give her a non answer because  RWBY isn't rewatch worthy for me, it'll burn me out even more and I think she deserves to watch better shows

I think you posted in the wrong thread. You might be looking for the blind watch thread in which the show is currently being compared to...

I don't even know, jersey shore?

But it's fair and unbiased criticism :V

Also you can't really refute any of their points without spoilers, which are banned (apart from when they do it for some reason?). So...
