RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

And naturally, they hit the future character goal for the Kickstarter, and were completely unprepared to show them.

You unlocked a new, never before heard of character! At this time very little is known about this character - their name, gender, race... is currently unknown! To explain the reasoning behind this, here is a brief note from Kerry Shawcross, Writer and Director of RWBY:

"I am super happy and excited (and not at all sleep deprived) about announcing this brand new character who will be appearing in a future volume of RWBY. All we can tell you right now is that they are a sub-boss! We are taking the integrity of RWBY into every thought and development of this unknown character, so at this moment we have very little to share with you. But be prepared - we do hope you fall in love (or hate) with this character just like we have."

A few more business notes regarding the development of the New RWBY Character.

  • This character will be appearing in a future volume of RWBY.
  • This character will be a Sub-Boss - 18 card deck with one objective card. (Hint: That means this character will be a bad person!)
  • This character will be shipped separately due to creative development and manufacturing time. This may mean it will ship later than July 2018. We will keep you updated.

CONGRATULATIONS! Every single one of you Backers has blown us away right and left, and we couldn't be more proud. We'll have another stretch goal for you all tomorrow with the fourth developer's update!

From all of us here at Rooster Teeth and Arcane Wonders - thank you.

Guess who didn't pay an average of $100 to wait a year to hear about some character who isn't even going to be that important?

Hmm, sub-boss suggests someone like Emerald or Mercury. Pity they don't want to share concept art yet, but I look forward to the reveal.

To be fair, the mean is skewed upwards by the ultra-high spenders. The median is $55, and the mode is only $45 (the base tier). That's not high for board games such as this.

So on the subject of aura discrepancies when it comes to aura not working when it is convenient to the plot, correct me if I'm wrong but is it just me or does it seem to consistently happen when Adam is involved. Because if so that might be related to his semblance and why he is so dangerous.

I don't think we need to spoiler this subject anymore as the episode has gone public.

As to Adam, his Semblance seems to be adsorb energy that is directed at his blade and then unleash it in a concentrated energy slash. The collective power seems to allow him to brute force through things he otherwise would not be able to in one hit like Yang or the spider mech.

Given he wasn't glowing I do not think this is how he killed Seinna though, but then her Aura didn't crackle either which feels odd to me.

Maybe Sienna never had her Aura unlocked?

But that sounds weird seeing that she advocated more militant methods to achieve their goals.

Yeah I find that unlikely as well given her role and views.

I have toyed with the idea that Aura is connected to one's willpower and focus, so while its always up, her guards turning on her, a previously loyal lieutenant perverting her ideals and planning to take her position, along with perhaps not expecting him to actually try and kill her like that led Sienna's Aura being easier to pierce than it normally would.

Or she may have been faking and will come back :D

Maybe she didn't activate her Aura in time before Adam got to her?

I mean, when Jaune got that cut on his cheek from that branch during the initiation, Pyrrha assumed that he didn't activate his Aura.

Uh, I don't recall them ever promising to reveal the character on the Kickstarter in the first place. The promise was that the character would be included in the game and that those who bought the game and the character would get a sneak peek then.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say everyone. Everyone did not pay $100 to wait a year to hear about the new character (citation for the character not being important?)

A lot of people did pay to get to play a fun looking board game and to support both the show they liked and the board game project in particular so that more stuff like it will get made in the future. Also to get cool extra stuff for the board game, to get t-shirts or art prints, signed copies of the game, extra copies to gift to friends, VIP tickets, etc.

Well and this might sound naive but maybe she thought she did not need to activate her aura since she never thought Adam or anyone else in the WF would betray her like that.
Possible, but by that point Adam and her guards had revealed their treason so I am unsure that works myself, though not expecting him to try and stab her right then and there I definitely could see.

As I see it, there are a number of different possibilities:

  1. Adam's sword has Aura-penetrating properties. (We know that his Semblance doesn't, because CRWBY specifically Jossed that after V3, stating that it was just that Yang's Aura was depleted and that Adam's Moonslice attack was able to blast through it and still have enough leftover power to chop off her arm. This theory is therefore unsatisfying because it implies a retcon.)
  2. Sienna has never unlocked her Aura. (This is unsatisfying because she's young, healthy, and the leader of a fragging terrorist group in a world where her own mooks (see, eg. V1E16 where Penny uses the flying sword discus on them) have functioning Auras. Also we still don't know that "unlocking" is an actual thing, apart from that one Jaune scene, where it could be that Jaune is just that lame or that it's Early Installment Weirdness to justify infodumping about Aura and will be ignored henceforth; it certainly hasn't been mentioned again--all other discussion has been about awakening Semblances, e.g. little-kid Ren).
  3. Aura has to be activated, either consciously or unconsciously or both and while it's "down" doesn't provide passive defense (I wrote a long post on the subreddit about the possibility of this one. Still unsatisfying because even if Sienna wasn't anticipating stabbiness it was still a tense situation with guards' weapons raised and she should have had her Aura up even if it's possible for it to be down.)
  4. The kind of protection Aura provides isn't useful against the kind of attack Adam used on her (lolwut? But never underestimate the possibility for a badly-articulated power that basically exists to be an in-universe justification for anime physics to work in unexpected ways.)
  5. Sienna's Aura is just really weak, mook-level, and Adam punched right through it on the way to her stomach (Unsatisfying because we didn't get an Aura-breaking visual or sound effect that they've been including in recent volumes; I'd have bought this one in V1).
  6. It somehow never crossed M&K's minds that it would be weird for someone to just get stabbed by surprise in a world where everybody that's been in combat in the series apparently has a personal forcefield of variable strength (Horribly unsatisfying because they've shown they have a better handle on what they're doing in recent volumes; even if their storytelling skills don't always live up to what they need them to be.)

So I just realized: remember all the way back in Volume 1 when Sun called the White Fang a cult, and we assumed that was just evidence of him being ignorant?

We know his Semblance doesn't have Aura breaking properties but we don't know if there isn't some assassination technique out there that let's your attack bypass Aura for the split second required to stab someone. Like, if you can learn to Fist of the North Star martial arts that makes enemies blow up like balloons and then explode if you punch them then who knows what kind of crazy swordsmanship techniques there are out there.

oh man just caught up. though the combat is less ultra blinding super action. some of the actions in the choreography of the fights were very interesting to see animated. the styles of fighting have more...character now. mostly in the character shorts.

I loved Qrow's reactions. all of them. he's just charming all in all.

[News] "RWBY: Combat Ready" Kickstarter bonus stretch goal
New update from the Kickstarter:
Hi all!
Arcane Wonders is back and with this developer update we'd like to discuss Experience Points!
  • What are experience points?
  • How do players earn experience in RWBY: Combat Ready?
  • What is experience used for?
Experience represents growing in knowledge and capability through battle and overcoming challenges. With each success, the character further develops their combat powers, enabling them to execute increasingly more powerful attacks and abilities.
Players earn 1 experience point (XP) at the end of each successful action. Every round, each player takes one action, such as making an attack or encountering an objective. When these actions are successful (your attack hits, or your attempt succeeds) the player gains 1 XP. However, if an action is not successful (for example, their attack misses), they do not receive any XP.

The center stage player will earn 1 XP each round they hit the Villain. Sideline players earn 1 XP each time they:
  • Attack and hit something (like a Villain, Sub Boss, or Minion).
  • Play an Assist action
  • Successfully encounter a non-combat objective (such as defusing the bomb or acquiring a dust crystal)
Ultimates! Successfully executing your Ultimate attack provides players with a large XP bonus. Ultimates provide a spectacular and satisfying finish to your Duel, dealing significant damage to the Villain! However, they are difficult to pull off, and thus provide a significant reward.
Team Experience Bonuses: Players also gain experience from accomplishing scenario goals. These goals are tough to beat, and require coordinated teamwork. These bonuses are usually given equally to every member of the team. Some examples of these team XP bonuses are:
  • Successfully completing Objectives. When Objectives are completed, they reward all players with experience. This can happen right during the middle of a battle! The amount awarded to each player is dictated on each Objective card.
  • Defeating the Villain! Every player receives an experience bonus for defeating the Villain and will be able to use that experience to improve their character for the next battle!
  • Surviving the battle. The players who survived the battle get a small experience reward. This bonus is not awarded to players who are defeated in battle.
Each time you gain experience, you mark it by advancing your cube the appropriate amount on your Scroll's experience track:

How You Use Experience
So what do you do with the experience you have earned? Experience can be spent to improve your attacks and moves by buying new cards. Here is how that works:
Player decks include a number of special "Upgrade Cards" which can be purchased with experience. Upgrade cards do not start the game in your regular play deck. Instead, they are kept in their own separate deck, called your "Upgrade Deck."
These upgrade cards offer the player a variety of improved attacks and abilities. They may deal more damage than your starting attacks, or tout cool and fun new effects and actions not available at the beginning of the game.
Before the game begins, shuffle your upgrade deck and place it face down next to your Scroll Tracker. Then, draw the first 3 upgrade cards from it, and place these face up in a row just above your Scroll tracker. These are the first upgrade cards available for you to purchase with experience points.
During the course of battle, players are able to see the cards available to purchase, and will be thinking about which ones they wish to buy. Some of these cards are unique and powerful improvements, and players will be encouraged to play well to earn the experience necessary to purchase them!
At the end of each Duel, players have a chance to purchase one or more of these new upgrade cards. The XP cost for an upgrade is printed on the card. Most of the time you'll be able to buy a new card, but some Duels you will not. You can always save up your experience to buy new cards later in the battle.
At the end of each Duel, all players simultaneously perform these actions, in this order:
  • 1. All players draw new player cards from their deck, back up to a full hand of 6 cards again.
  • 2. Then, players may buy new upgrade cards from the 3 available, by paying their XP cost. If a new card is purchased, the player immediately adds the card to their hand.
  • 3. Then, players must remove cards from their hand so that they only have 6 cards. They choose which cards to remove. These cards are placed to the side, out of the play area, and have been removed from the game! In this manner, each time you buy a new and improved card, you are also removing one of the cards from your deck. Thus, your deck is always going to have the same number of cards in it, but those cards are always improving and getting better!
  • 4. After all players have finished purchasing upgrades, replace any purchased cards in the upgrade row with new ones.
What happens if I don't like any of the 3 face up cards in my upgrade row?
A player can always spend 1 XP and cycle all of the cards in their upgrade row. Place all upgrade cards on the bottom of your upgrade deck and reveal the next 3 upgrade cards from the top of the upgrade deck, placed face up in a row. This action ensures you have some fresh choices.
The best part about experience is buying cool new cards for your deck, granting you awesome new actions, abilities, and effects! This allows your character to grow stronger and stronger throughout the current battle and in every battle to come in your campaign!
We'll have one more update for you before this Campaign is over, so stay tuned and thank you once again for all of your support in helping us create this incredible game.
Thank you,
Arcane Wonders
P.S. - Rooster Teeth said they'd have another Stretch Goal, and we've got it to upload today!
The new Stretch Goal is to rework the game with a optional fifth player mode where a fifth person can play as the villain. Its unlocked at 640k.

So I just realized: remember all the way back in Volume 1 when Sun called the White Fang a cult, and we assumed that was just evidence of him being ignorant?
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, given Sun's ignorance about Faunus history, treatment, and the White Fang I'm not sure I'm going to give him credit for stumbling on a term that somewhat applies to the WF.

I mean, it kind of brings up the point that other than "terrorists," we don't really look much into how the White Fang are viewed in Remnant at large. Do the WF give off a kind of cultish vibe to those outside the organization?

I would have said they didn't, but then it turned out they have fox priests and goddamn throne room.

Its hard to say, honestly it seems to vary from place to place. The Vale faction looked and act quite militant, the brothers stationed on Menagerie were much more 'culty' or could just be extrapolating on terminology designed to build bridges and a sense of tight community already existing in the Faunus community, while the Mistral faction seems to fall in-between. Of course that doesn't tell us much about how they are seen, but given the assumptions made by cops (Right more y accident than deduction I feel) most likely just see them as criminals, maybe?
