RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

So I just had a crazy thought about why Tyrian might be interested in Jaune. So remember how Tyrian was originally supposed to he hunting the Spring Maiden and Jaune has 7 sisters? Want to be one of them is the Maiden in question and Tyrian was interested in Jaune due to there resemblence?

Or maybe hes just fucking with them

Though the Death Stalker was also quite interested in Jaune, considering it didn't kill him instantly and decided to keep him around as a pet while chasing pyrrha!

I was thinking the same things- with the addition that one of his sisters ran away and joined with Raven's bandit squad.

Random thoughts in the night: I prefer the old art style to the new one. I think, ideally, they're aiming for the same kind of crisp anime cel shading like GuiltyGearXrd but sometimes shadows fall on the face really oddly and somehow the girls look better than the guys, most of the time. I can't describe it well but, the thing that bugs me is the way light and shadows appear. No matter what surface it is, skin, cloth, hair, shadows look really 'plastic' because they're following the perfectly flat models, which don't fool my human eyes. Bit of a shame to see the textures go too. I think the best example of what I mean is farmboi ploughing very textured soil that has no outlines, and Weiss's new model where her fabric dress isn't much different from her metallic jewellery.
I was initially really impressed seeing Ruby in the new style because she didn't look 'off'. Then again, Jaune's jawline keeps disappearing from front-on (making his whole head/neck look like a giant thumb, but I don't like him much anyway :p) and Ren's bishounen features look kinda...triangular from certain angles. I think RWBY still looks way better than it did in V1 though, the backgrounds and scenery are way better and the Grim emerging out of oily gloop was badass.

And naturally, we crash the site for an episode a lot of people are excited over.

[Discussion] Volume 4, Chapter 7: Punished
Episode 7 Punishment
Ozpin I get you're trying, but you are not great at this, also Oscar's aunt needs to listen harder when he's yelling at himself in his room, complicated and sympathetic situation for the poor kid.

Papa Schnee hit Weiss, I am not remotely surprised by this, he also seemed super chill about doing it, just carrying on with a lecture so it seems pretty normal to him and not some slip he feels bad about or does rarely. Also he's imprisoning Weiss in her own home, treating her as a child, and also signing stuff like her title as heiress away to Whitley while claiming its all because of what happened at Beacon and that she's too traumatised, as if I could hate him more.

Whitley is a dick, but given how he was talking about their dad I get the impression he had similar experiences but learnt a different lesson than his sister, IE, as opposed to fight or run, obey and and imitate.

Weiss has her sword back, yes, yes, yes! Fight, release the fury!

Someone pick my jaw off the floor cos this fight is amazing! Also Tyirien just giving a weird smile while bullet blocking Ruby's shots with his tail is hilarious ad terrifyingly creepy.

Not a fan of that punch stopping point, feels weird, maybe its to convey Tyrien is a speedster and is thus more fragile?

Some weird stuff just happened with Qrow's cloak/Aura there, also that man loves him some dramatic posing, shame he and Tyrien are enemies, I bet they could bond XD

Ruby isn't using her Speed Semblance which feels weird, is she too injured? Still she's getting focus, yay!

It was a wooden plank, pretty sure she could-a tanked that, though it does seem surprise attacks hurt more.

I find something hilarious about those lingering stares of gratitude actually being used a against a hero when Tyrien used one to deliver a poison cut, but then his mocking stare got used on him in another surprise attack and boom no tail and he's dropping the B-word, Tyrien has lost his chill.

So given how weird his arm is moving, I wonder if that tail damage did spinal damage? Also she'll forgive you' was that directed at himself or Ruby? Probably himself but still.

All pertinent questions RNJR!

(Arches eyebrow) looks like he might tell them things, intriguing.

I am really hoping that Whitley is only pretending to be obedient to get into a better position to help out Weiss since him simply being or becoming Papa Schnee 2.0 just seems far to obvious and kind of disappointing

Well it took four seasons but this show finally seems to be learning enough lessons that it has officially gone from my 'I like it. Even though it's not really that good' to my 'I like it even thought it's just okay' column. They could still flub it by the end but I am cautiously optimistic.

So after all the shit Tyrian gave Cinder, Ruby doesn't even need some ancient power to beat him. She just goes 'oops, sorry about the tail'.

Get rekt loser.

I often end up pausing in cringey scenes. Thanks to Weiss I took over an hour to watch this episode.

Ruby couldn't use her semblance because she was out of Aura. Ruby couldn't tank the falling plank because she was out of aura.

What I'm wondering is why Tyrian didn't get a grenade in the back as he fled. Because he was out of Aura.

To be fair, he kind of just went through a warm up fight, then fought Qrow, then fought Qrow and Ruby, then got caught off guard by Ruby giving his tail a trim. I get the impression that Salem means, one on one, her goons know how to deal with Silver Eyed fighters in a way that mitigates their power.

And Cinder had just finished fighting Ozpin plus her fight with Pyrrha and then Ruby just popped up out of nowhere and used a power Cinder had no reason to think she could use.

Tyrian on the other hand went in knowing about her eyes and then once he got Qrow he flat out let his guard down and lost his tail.

Well . . . It will certainly give Cinder a confidence boost. ;)

Cinder - Rasping at Tyrian -

Tyrian - What?

Cinder - Rasping again -

Tyrian - Leans closer

Cinder - You must have a whale of a tail to tell.

Super protagonist powers, nothing else. otherwise she wouldn't even be able to get close to him, and she certainly wouldn't be able to cut his tail off. RWBY continuing standard shounen power creep. 9/10 odds says that none of her contemporaries would be able to pull that off. After all, a supercharged Nora did less than nothing.

That is quite probable, though I thought she still had Aura left to some degree at least, though maybe not enough for a speed dash.

I'm pretty sure she could only do the damage she did because Qrow had not Tyrien's Aura down based on how we saw it cracking and that it was a surprise attack which seem to have greater impact. Plus Ruby's attacks were doing jack before that.

I always thought it would be more that Ruby was using a Slicing attack type versus the Impact attack that Nora used that was more the reason she was able to damage his tail

Also, now based on how Weiss flinched away form her father before he struck her and how calm he was when he did strike her, I feel that the curling up defensively scene was indeed intentional

That seems probable.

Ep 7

Well, the Schnee family is as bad as I expected... Dammit. I was really hoping there'd be more depth her, but no.

Maybe mama Schnee will help? Pfff, I doubt it. Weiss is gonna have to bust her way out of there, hopefully with a summoned knight robot leading the charge.

As for the fight, loved the first half. It showed off the difference in skill levels incredibly well.

After Qrow got disarmed, it all went downhill for me. The punch, just waiting for him to grab his sword. I'd been hoping that would be a very tense portion that forced RNJR to join in so Qrow could get his weapon back.

And then Ruby at the end completely broke suspension of disbelief. Though, it still beats some of the v3 fights imo.

At least it seems like we'll be getting some more answers next episode. Also our main characters will gain knowledge of what they're really up against.

His Aura was depleted. Pay attention next time

One comment on the RWBY episode page suggests that Tyrian might be partially or fully blind and relies mostly on his hearing. Note how he quickly responds to noisy attacks or actions he can't see, but seems to have trouble when actions are quiet. Moreover Qrow seems to figure this out when Ruby fires a shot right past Tyrian and he reacts to the contrails but has a delayed reaction before figuring out where the bullet went. Thereafter, Qrow first tries just punching him, then quietly walks over to his sword with Tyrian responding only when he grabs it, and then luring Tyrian into jumping onto the broken wooden beam. And in the end, Ruby lands a hit because she was already at pointblank range, all she needed to do was soundlessly lower her weapon and fire.

Also its exceedingly unlikely that Tyrian's poison attack was lethal seeing as he was intending to land one on Ruby, who he intended to take in alive.
