RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Also I don´t think that Penny was meant to be a soul jar, the idea does not seem to have poped up until Cinder stole part of Amber´s power, and Penny must have been made long before that.

I didn't think so either. I was just saying it might have made more sense to retcon Penny to be the designated back-up maiden when they inserted the maiden lore into Volume 3. She actually has a mysterious background touched upon previous (robot built to sustain an Aura) that could be bent into shape to fill the role.

Pyrra already had more than enough reason to die heroicly. She was tricked into maiming an innocent person by Cinder in a scheme designed to help trigger a massive grimm assault. Her sense of duty would compell her to fight if she thought it would make a difference.

Really, I actually do like Jaune's arc here. Better than the fucking Jaundace and Dance arcs. We see him dealing with the loss of a teammate, and is trying (and failing) to cope. However, the focus should be less on Jaune and more on Ruby. Right now Ruby may be dealing with things internally, but the focus is still on Jaune, keeping Ruby in the background. On its own, Jaune's arc is compelling and I would read a story around it. But that's the thing. On its own. Jaune, unfortunately, does not exist in a vacuum. The show is called RWBY, pronounced like Ruby's name, and she's the leader of her team, which all got their own trailers to show they were the stars of the show. She should at least get equal billing to Jaune. Right now I would actually like Ruby to blow her top, because things would finally start focusing on her. Right now there are hints that she's changed, but that's all they are: vague hints that are easily missable.

So where are JNRR anyway? Like, mapwise. Because right now it sounds like they have worse directional sense than the twerps. Feel free to correct me. I'm not gonna die on the hill of possibly-faulty second-hand information.

Anima was mentioned in episode 1, so they're at least on the right continent.

RWBY is iffy enough on scale that it's hard to get any more precise than that. They'll get to their destination when and if the plot requires them to.

I do wonder about the time skip a little, I feel like three or fourth months could have done the same thing, the current length feels just a little long for some reason.

I'm guessing the next episode will revolve around Blake. And that's all I'll say on the matter; I've made my feelings about Blake quite clear in the past.

Say, has Matt's RWBY recap for V4 for episode 1 &2 been posted here?

Their jokes continue to be audacious. I lost count how many lines they crossed. It interspersed their actual thoughts with pretty out-there RWBY screencaps, as usual.

Even though Pyrra has been triple confirmed dead the Rwby team is still as cagey as hell when it comes to her, so here are some long run possibilities

1:we meet up with characters who are important to her past which will necessitate flash backs(teachers, friends and family)

2: she cloned in someway(either through a semblance or actual science)

3:she has a twin or sibling with the exact opposite personality which will be used for character growth for the mains (if its a she it will be the same voice actor just for the gut punch)

1 and 3 are the most likely to happen since I don't think Cloning technology has been established in RWBY as of yet.

Option 1 relating Pyrrha's past seems the most likely yeah.

[Discussion] Volume 4, Chapter 3: Of Runaways and Stowaways
OK so episode 3:
Yay Blake and Yang-centric episode!

Blake is hyper paranoid now it seems, understandably so and travelling on a very big boat, Sun is following her in secret and has been for awhile, I won't comment on that much further but yeah...

We see Yang who is clearly lacking in enthusiasm to the point where she barely reacts when offered a new arm by her dad, how he got into contact with Ironwood lest it was months ago and just got finished and delivered now I don't know, but it looks pretty cool and has a gear symbol on it matching the symbol we saw on Yang's promo art. Yang's also evidently suffering from PTSD as a broken glass flashes her back to Adam, something she is painfully aware of and displeased by, she seems to be trying to get by with one arm and looked a little lost when offered the gift so I guess we'll see where that goes, well done and heavy use of mood though and Tai is clearly trying his best but doesn't know how to help.

Blake encounters Sun and is less than pleased by his presence, but then a sea dragon Grimm attacks and she, Sun and the crew (via cannons) have to fight it off, I love how even a wooden ship on the way to Menagerie has really advanced looking computers, and the crew designs were just fun. The fight was over all pretty rocking, some impressive combo attacks and the Grimm can shoot frikking lasers out of its freaking mouth, Blake's temporary shoulder injury weirded me out and I do kind of wish that she or Sun had killed it over a cannon, but said cannon and ramming speeds was still very boss. Turns out Sun did leave his team, though he did at least tell them ahead of him he was leaving and figured Blake was going on a one woman rampage against the WF. Blake claims she is not going after them yet though and is instead heading 'home' so she is evidently from Menagerie which raises so many questions.

Finally we see Salem calmly lecturing Cinder, but getting more than a little cross when Cinder tries to use Emerald to interpret and she seemingly does not believe Ozpin is dead, is looking for some kind of relic (or maybe she regards Ozpin as a relic) and can manage the Grimm at great distances via some kind of floating jellyfish Grimm, but it seems still, somewhat, limited but overall very intimidating.

Edit: Also Blake ditches her bow, woooh! Also her ears seem bigger and are so much more expressive now I love it.

  • Yang's scenes were really well done. Her depression and lethargy were practically palpable. I think my favorite part of the episode was the first few seconds we saw her, where she was sitting on the couch. She looked at the stack of books to her right, but then went for the remote on her left since it was right next to her left arm. Even more than her rejection of the prosthetic, I think this moment encapsulated her current emotional state.
  • I wasn't as keen on Blake's part, at least not at first. She was far too brooding in her talk with the captain for my taste, though I suppose that's kind of her thing. The only part I liked from that scene was when she threw away her bow, which was a huge deal, for obvious reasons. On the other hand, I thought the byplay she had going with Sun was phenomenal. Since the end of Volume 3 I've been a hardcore Bumblebee shipper (as opposed to your standard Bumblebee shipper, which I've been since Volume 2), but I have to day that Blake and Sun's dynamic is quickly growing on me.
  • Chinese dragon Grimm = SQEEEEE!
  • Jen Taylor and Salem continue to be absolutely fucking awesome. I see that she brought out a little more menace now that the rest of the Council of Evil have left her to talk with Cinder's faction in private. The jellyfish was appropriately terrifying, especially with the little clues we got from it, such as Salem being able to literally tell it to do things. It's confirmation that Grimm are truly sentient and able to communicate with (or at least understand) human/faunus speech, the implications of which are rather staggering.

I really hope that they're using Yang not using the arm immediately to show that her psychological scars need to be addressed as well as her physical ones and when she's in a better headspace she'll use it. And not "she doesn't need the arm" plot because while it may well true that she could become extremely proficient with only one arm; having two arms is still objectively useful.

Anyone know what the secret code 2frvwYF means? I tried: https://bit.ly/2frvwYF

And it leads to a Rooster Teeth image hosted on Amazon, but the image is blank, like 0 bytes.

The code appears in the news ticker while Yang's watching TV:

It says: "Authorities baffled by mysterious code: 2frvwYF"

Blake is triggered by small children and friendly old people. #EARSFREED2K16. Sun, why are you hiding under a cloak. Neither of you can leave the boat at this point go say hi already.

Irondaddy pulls through and gives Yang the hand she deserves. Looks kinda lame imo, like they ripped the arm off a Knight model. Needs paint job. Dang this whole segment is depressing but well done.

SEA BATTLE. FLYING SERPENT GRIMM. FUCK YEAH. RAMMING SPEED. Oh shit, Grimm are confirmed to have elemental attacks. Hope to see even more exotic stuff from them in the future. Sadly the size prevented any fancy gun-chucks from being used, but I really love the way they used Sun and Blake's semblances in this one to aid with the aerial maneuvers. That was great. Best fight of the volume so far, the breaks for talking felt like they actually made sense since the Grimm was primarily targeting the boat.

Sun got an upgrade, he can move with his clones summoned now (and upgraded to 3 max!) but it looks like he has to take a specific pose to summon them. Also, I thought they changed his pants to a fancier model but apparently those fancy white decorative threads have been there since V1.

This is probably pre-timeskip as Blake seemed like she might still be injured from Adam when she got knocked out of the air. Also a lingering wound would explain why she was having her clones throw her instead of just jumping off them and was not spamming clone shields like she did in previous volumes. Aura still low. Plus it's unlikely they're going to show the parts of the boat trip that did not involve sea monsters.

Salem, what the hell is with that eye glow. This is fucking creepy. I do not wanna find out what happens if that Grimm jellyfish touches you. Starting to wonder if the plot twist is Emerald and Mercury throwing Cinder in a bag and legging it, they look surprisingly concerned about what Salem's doing their boss. So apparently there is a Relic she wants at Beacon? I have a guess as to what Yang's plot hook is now.

I don't think Cinder would lie to Salem's face about killing Ozpin so I predict he's some flavor of reviving immortal.

I suspect Sun's being set up for a reality check when they get to Menagerie. Growing up in this place resulted in Blake believing the WF was a good idea so I think he's being way, waaaay too optimistic about the trip being fun. They really turned his carefree attitude up to eleven in this one, and some of his lines were shallow to the point where its starting to come off as serious flaw instead of a personality trait. Lingering on the fact that he completely misread Blake's motivation and confirming he ditched his team to go to another continent while world communications are down aren't details they should add without addressing them later in my opinion.

I think what the whole fandom is collectively holding their breaths for is the first one vs one match up. The grimm battles we have seen have been pretty good but what every body is waiting for is the big fights. Mark Zhang isn't going to come onto rooster teeth to animate until he does a few more videos and finishes his own trailer series.( which is a very good idea as he not quite their but getting close)

Next RWBY episodes.

-Prryha is really really good
-And Mercury was clearly holding back
-And Jaune is still baaaaaad
-So thats why he dropepd out, he found out about Prryha's thing.
-And poor Blake. This is driving her up the frigging wall. She needs help and a break
-Oh god the lazer pen. That's just wacky. Cuz she's a kitty :3
-Because you're a friggin try hard Jaune. She's out of your league. And even if you did tell her she would shoot you down
-Man this is just painful for Prryha. Seriously?
-Ruby in heels is cute
-But Blake is even better.

So ummm... I am wondering, I mean all this unique weapon design and what have you, where did these weapons come from? I have something of an idea where it was all inspired and what have you... Mainly on the origin of the weapons used to slay the Grimm before humanity converted them into basically futurisitic Trick Weapons

Ruby in heels is cringeworthy. She just looks so uncomfortable.

I need a folder of RWBY reaction images. Weiss' and Blake'sreaction to Oobleck

That was comedy gold
