RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Well, the thing I find odd is that Cinder is the only female among Salem's lieutenant, yet Tyrian was initially sent to hunt down the Spring Maiden, probably to steal her powers too. But then that would mean that there's a way to circumvent the rule that a Maiden must be a young woman (btw where was it stated again, I can't remember it?), or there's three more female lieutenants that we didn't saw yet.
Or as I had hypothesized earlier they are trying to make Cinder into the "Maiden of All Seasons" if that is possible of course. and it was Qrow when they were explaining things to Pyrrha about the maidens.

Given the magic sucking Grimm-bug its possible they have a way around the Maidens rules, or they just want to keep the maidens powers lost, or beat down and kidnap said Maidens to remove their powers elsewhere.

I have a theory on the Silver Eyes, if the Maidens, and probably other supernatural creatures, are weak to them it would explain why they are so rare, not only they would have to deal with the Grimm, the Maidens and their followers, because I can see a powerful Maiden having a following, but the Ozpinluminaty and the Council of Evil, Silver Eyed Warriors would be extremely useful for both groups, as both of them seem to be heavily involved with the Maidens, meaning that both groups must have killed the other group Warriors.

It also explains why Salem didn't kill Ruby after she killed Summer, she wanted a Silver Warrior of her own to deal with the Maidens, but by the time that she killed Summer Ruby was too old for her to murder the rest of Xio Long family and raise Ruby on her own, so instead she let her grow and once Ruby was old and powerful enough she would try to recruit her. She might try to tempt Ruby with power, she might threaten her loved ones or she might use magic to control Ruby, given how Salem have been shown I vote for a combination of all of the above.

The simple explanation is that Tyrian's job is only to locate and identify the Maidens which is why he was much more exited about hunting Ruby because it seemed like he could kill her. Tyrian is probably the reason why Cinder knew how to find Amber and as the key to their victory Cinder will likely get the power of all 4 Maidens.

Youtube version of season 4 ep 1 is up also can anyone confirm weather there were animation mistakes in the initial release and then fixed later on when the Youtube version was released? I remember that happened alot during season 1-3

Given how socially adept Salem is she might even attempt to convince Ruby it's the right thing to do.

[Discussion] Volume 4, Chapter 2: Remembrance
New episode is up:
Well that certainly gave feels, Weiss's scene honestly filled me with so much dread I had to pause once or twice due to discomfort so kudos on that front, great scene direction, expression and body language. Her brother, how many secret family members ya gonna pop out RT, seems like a fledgling tool but may not be as much of a dick as expected, Ironwood is chill and her dad is a greedy jerk, but sorta, kinda treats Weiss as a peer, but only when she's agreeing with him. Also he apparently yells at his wife a lot and she drinks a lot. We also switch back and forth between RNJR and Weiss so that's liable to be the way the next few episodes are paced, kind of wavy on that myself, but will see how its hand;ed going forward.

Ruby is suffering, poor Ruby, but also it feels like she's being used more like a framing device for Jaune scenes which while it was well done really is not what I tuned into 'RWBY' for (Please don't tell me the "JNPR are meant to be = mains" thing, its not advertised and RWBY/JNPR so I won't treat it as such, regardless of director commentary). Ren is emoting which is interesting and there seems to be something he and Nora won't tell the others. Kinda confused why Jaune said he and Ren would take turns carrying the Huntsmen though, Nora is easily the physically strongest, was it a height thing?

So, new ep is out.
Weiss has an asshole brother, a not-dead mother (ikr) and a nice old Neo for a butler. Dad Schnee is MAXIMUM creep. Meanwhile, with Team Protag, Rubes has a Pyhraa dream, with info she didn't hear (Spoopy Ghost!Phyraa ?), Jaune's vacation spot is dead as shit and N&R are eyeing up that hoove mark something fierce. Rubes has another Pyrah dream and hears her voice outside of the dream (Spoopy Ghost!Piyraa intensifies) and finds Jaune training to a pre-recorded message of Peerer and its really dusty in here all of a sudden(spoopy ghost!P-Money therory takes an arrow to the chest.)

Did anyone else notice that Klein's (the butler) eyes changed color three times in the scene he was in? That has to be significant somehow.

Ruby hearing Pyrrha say things in her dream that she wasn't there to hear in person makes me wonder what's going on with that.

Just watched Chapter 2.
Papa Schnee seemed a little bit over-the-top to me. Very 'designated jackass of the season' that we're supposed to hate. Personally I'm hoping the Big Schnee turns out to be more than the two-dimensional money-grubbing asshole we've seen so far.

On the other hand, there have been some interesting hints towards the other family members. Going by that garden comment, Mrs. Schnee might be something of an alcoholic, and in the painting it seemed like the brother was the only child that wasn't miserable.

Ren and Nora clearly recognize that symbol. Looks like we'll be getting some backstory and character development for those two.

Ruby is having visions. This must be the work of an enemy stand SILVER EYES!

More feels for Jaune.

or that the eyes thing was an animation mistake.

I don't know, honestly cutting off Dust shipments to the other kingdoms could seriously impact those other kingdoms. This is supposed to be six months later right? Dust is used to power everything in Remnant. Without those Dust shipments the other kingdoms are likely having shortages. Those shortages themselves could both make the kingdoms more vulnerable and make them more angry at Atlas. Cutting off a resource because it could be used for military applications kind of makes it seem like you're softening them up for war.

Yeah we'll probably get some backstory for Ren and Nora which would be nice.
or that the eyes thing was an animation mistake.
If it was once I could understand an animation mistake, but how does it change between red, yellow, and blue (red->blue->yellow->blue) by mistake?

This one felt disappointingly short. It had a lot of very slow scenes that mainly served to re-establish character X's unhappiness.

Weiss has a little brother named Whitley, her mother isn't dead but is an alcoholic, Jacques Schnee had black hair in his youth so the white hair must come from their mother.

Whitley kinda feels like he would be a Draco Malfoy-type asshole to anyone but his family. Possible non-combatant? He admired Winter and Weiss's strength, but looks kinda shrimpy himself and seems to be the baby of the family.

Man, RNJR has good dialogue chemistry. Once again, Jaune feels bad about life as yet another precious childhood memory is burned into ashes by assholes. Ren's reaction was interesting, he was the most determined to find survivors but when they found the dying man the other 3 drew back to discuss what to do next while Ren backed off to be alone in his distress (and then Nora followed him). Nora was surprisingly the most cynical perspective on trying to help the man. Nora and Ren look pretty interested in that giant hoofprint, Boss Fight next chapter? Maybe a Minotaur?

Ironwood embargoed Dust exports, Jacques is pissed off. Weiss will likely be attending Atlas Academy in the future if nothing changes. Atlas still being blamed but not outright war. WOW WHAT A DICK. So you want to hold a charity concert to make your company look good? Make sure to give a good impression to your lead singer by insulting her manners when she enters the room, make it clear the only reason you want her to sing is to score pity points, and confirm she has no real choice in refusing this obligation!

God fuck off Jacques.

Klein is fucking awesome. More genderbent triple Launch-expy plz. One of his 3 eye colors was blue and Jacques looked quite elderly in the family portrait, so I wonder if Klein might be an illegitimate Schnee? He does have the same moustache as Jacques. This will be my potato theory of the week.

Jaune was listening to a recording of Pyrrha. Looks like he got much stronger not just from the road, but from practicing his basic drills over and over each night. This scene is sad. I hope Ruby can help in some way.

I... wasn't talking about the dust embargo? And even if I was, I think that Papa Schnee was mainly just pissed at losing business, not potentially worsening relations between kingdoms. Note the comment about Ironwood costing him millions, and the very clear lack of regard for any kingdom other than Atlas. He didn't seem that broken up about Beacon/Vale being in tatters.

What I was talking about how all he seemed to care about was profit, and just didn't give a shit about what Weiss wanted (or didn't want) to do.

So I finally came across to watching Episode 1 because I'm not one of the people to spend money for the membership but in any case...

Eh, I felt the episode of meh. Maybe its because that's been my general attitude for RWBY. The point of it being there and some members of a certain RP community are decent in some cases but... eehh.

I don't know, maybe I am kinda growing out of an anime binge or maybe I've seen too many anime. I dunno

Gah, I can't watch it today cause my acquintance who I watch E1 with isn't here. Freemium account does mean I just need to be patient for tomorrow. Also the guys in the SB thread oointed out the animation errors for E1 in YT was fixed (can tentatively confirm).

I really was hoping that Mr. Schnee wasn't just going to be a jerk businessman who cares only about profit and appearances, but that seems like where we're going.

The animators did a great job with Weiss for her scenes, her anxiety and desire to be anywhere else came through incredibly well.

Ironwood continues to be very understanding and one of my favorite characters, though stopping Dust trade seems to be about the counter productive to showing that you aren't going to invade other Kingdom's action that could have been taken.

Actually, that would've been a nice argument for Mr. Schnee and him to have.

Klein is also great and I want to see the adventures of Weiss and her side-kick, battle butler now. We seen two characters with changing eye color before, Neo and Yang. He seems to have as much control over it as Neo.

For team RNJR's parts... can we please be done with Jaune and how much he misses Pyrrha for at least a little while? It's important to all of them, I know, but we got him wanting to prove himself worthy of her and missing her in episode one and now we see... he's still doing her training and is broken up about it.

Ruby hearing her is interesting, but worrying at the same time. If she winds up being a force ghost... I'd be disappointed. Her death was very well done and fit the ending of her character arc so well.

Though it's also possible that her soul is being turned into some sort of Grimm-human-hybrid monster and Ruby's silver eyes are allowing her to tap into her memories.

The burned village brought out a lot of interesting and important things for Ren and Nora, especially considering the end of volume two where Ren really wanted to help the village besieged by Grimm, even when Vale was under attack as well. Between Nora's cynicism about their chances of saving the survivor and the symbol on the ground, there's a lot waiting to be discussed and I really want to see how Ruby deals with talking to them about it. Can she draw more hope back out or is their story a something that she doesn't know how to deal with?

Good episode.

Happy that we got both RNJR and Weiss rather than the one member of RWBY per episode idea some people floated.

I like that both Ironwood and Mr Schnee both have justifiable and understandable positions on the Dust Embargo thing.

I like that Ironwood gave Weiss a way out with the Atlas academy offer (albeit still some months in the future - they must have lost a number of students andor teachers if they're still trying to get everything back together).

I like the Weiss-Father interactions. Cold but not cartoonish.

I like that Ruby seems to have minor PTSD.

And I was worried we'd get some sort of Pyrrha spirit thing when Ruby woke up the second time. But nope it was a video. Phew.
And then I was worried she'd offer to help train Jaune but she went back to bed, at least for now. Good.

Overall I liked the episode though I am alot more worried about the time constraints now. With 3 hours to work with (assuming comments made at the last panel were in relation to number of minutes and not episodes) we are now about 1/5 through the total run time of the volume and we have not even seen 2 of the title characters.

I was kind of hoping this was going to be the character arc volume but given that a lot of these characters are going to have about 20 minutes of screen time (quick napkin estimate) over the whole thing I do not see that happening to a particularly satisfying degree.
