RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

@Those guys bitching about farmer boy.

stfu have you seen Donnel? Motherfucker tears through armies like fucking wheat to scythe you don't mess with farmers mmkay? If you're a farmer in an anime, either you die like a bitch or you will kick so much fucking ass you pretty much become the hero/ine.

That's precisely what we don't want!

Okay fine then what do you want? I mean the dude got a nice slice of screen time, what do you want him to do now, not show up? (Or y'know, die. Or be cute, being cute is fine in my books. Seriously his hair man.)

Come on, we need a proletariat hero to rise against the capitalist threat and bring the Motherland to life again!

I dont want him to intrude on the narrative niche of established characters, we've already got badass fighters aplenty.

Still, judging from their introduction, the farmhand seems to be less a new fighter and more a living McGuffin; they're definitely related to Salem and Co. in some way, and definitely not as a fighter.

Long Haired Cinder: Ew.

Short Haired Cinder: MUST PROTECT AT ALL COSTS. so cute~! ahh fuck im turning into woolie.

Cortana is an awesome boss, praise based AI Overlord.

Hazel reminds me of General Jaeger from Valkyria Chronicles, except a hell lot less suave.

Crazy Axe Laughing Man honestly gave me quite the chuckle for how over the top he was. Honestly he seems like a guy who would fuck over everyone's plan just for a laugh. My headcanon for this season is that all he does is just constantly heckle Cinder with bad eye puns.

Have I mentioned how adorable Cinder is? She is very cute.

ROCK 'EM SOCK 'EM GIANT GOLEM

The giant golem honestly is a freaking cool ass boss, I so wouldn't mind fighting it in a RPG.

Boss strat reminds me of that bishop thingy in Kingdom Heart 1: Destroy all the limbs and then go for the body. (Technically you can just bum rush the body but it's easier to do destroy the limbs first.)

Jaune has no weapons, wtf man. At least give him a gun or something. Or a scouter of some sort iunno.

Not sure if the cast making comments mid plan was meant to be a joke or not.

Ren's fighting style remains cool as ever. LET'S BEYBLLAAAAADEEEEEE DIE DIE DIE

Nora/Ruby team attack was a bit meh because the impact wasn't there, like if they slow mo-ed it and showed electricity weaving in out of the golem as it slowly disintergrated would've been fucking awesome. Honestly I think that was the major issue with the fight, no impact/they didn't sell it well enough.

Also lightning hammer attacks, fucking finally.

That blacksmith is hot you cannot deny it. His voice is good too.

Ruby continues to be a national treasure.

Jaune's upgrades, sentimentality aside looks...like a downgrade? He looks less armored, I mean I know he barely wears armor to begin with but still. Sadly the sword is still just a sword come on man at least add a gauss cannon to it.

Watch as Vol. 4 mainly consists of RNJR getting lost and caught up in a billion shenanigans. Meanwhile Crazy Axe Man has the hardest of times keeping up with them as they wander around aimlessly and constantly thwarting his schemes by sheer accident. Salem freaks the fuck out, thinking this is the true tactical geniusTM of Jaune Arc. Cinder continues to moe it up. Yang starts up a new organization, Hunters Sans Frontieres. Blake loses sight of her goals and begins to search for the One Piece. Meanwhile Weiss finds out her summon only came about due to her great great uncle being Grimmified, this causes her father's summon to start choking the fuck out of him. Weiss only has 30 days to (begrudgingly) save her father, and thus SchneeDust Crusaders begins!
maybe segmented armor to be able to do more agile fighting moves?. Obligatory semblance joke that Jaune's is causing people to overestimate him. On why Jaune doesn't bring a weapon and the rest of RNR don't remind him or Jaune at least not borrowing a weapon while his gear got 'upgraded'...

Yeahhh I dunno on that. Maybe all available weapons to be rented/borrowed are crap, they're strapped on time, or RNJR thinks 'eh we got this'? On the subject on ranged weapons I think Jaune was hinted that he's about to have one? Probably just a meh sidearm just for suppression.

You make no mention of nu villain Watts. New Stache villain not interesting enough? :V

EDIT: also farmers in anime die like a bitch or be awesome? awesomely die like a bitch confirmed then~

Or the farmhand is just a farmhand and we are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
Nah, this is the theory that's most unlikely. RWBY may have more of a budget now, but at the end of the day they still only have so many resources, and devoting said resources to develop a unique character model and environment and creating an extended sequence focusing exclusively on them is too much of an investment not to have a payoff.

It might not be a significant payoff (we might just get a few seconds of revelation at the end of the volume, like with Raven), but the kid's gotta matter somehow.

I mean, you say that, but Rwby 1-3 already spent screentime on characters like Velvet and Neptune and, yes, Jaune, at the expense of the actual title characters.

But they did end up mattering to the specific plots of at least an episode: Velvet was a hamfisted attempt to show discrimination against Faunus, and Neptune as Weiss's love interest and Jaune's rival in that matter. Sure, they didn't matter overall and were to the detriment of Team RWBY and the overarching plot, but their purpose was evident.

In contrast, the farmhand hasn't done anything of purpose but be mysterious, which makes them reappearing far more likely. Another analogy is Cinder in Volume 1: she appears in Episode 1 as a silhouette, then is revealed as a villain at the end of the Volume.

So, new theory for Yang's arm, rather than a pure mechanical one she gets a hard light one she projects specifically for fighting to avoid wasting Dust powering it the rest of the time. Stupid probably but I love the image.

Also: Someone on Tumblr noted that most/all of Salem's minions seem to have the same eye colour and given eyes were said to be important, maybe she created/infected them with something?

He's like General Gregor except not a Nazi.

The dust salesman from episode one he has a unique model and has absolutely no impact on the over arching plot

They do, however, get a lot of mileage out of him considering he's also a truck driver and concessions stand operator.

Like, nobody is saying that a fantasy story shouldn't have extraneous details. Otherwise you're just watching a storyboard or reading an outline, not experiencing the illusion of a fleshed out world.

But like, JNPR ate something on the order of 1/3rd of season 1's screen time.

The heck are you talking about? He's part of the scene that kicks of the entire freaking plot. The character might not have been important but the scene itself sure as hell was. The old man never shows up in any scenes by himself, he always appears only to advance the plot for other important characters such as introducing the audience to Emerald in V2, revealing Penny's robotic nature by running into her with his truck and showing that the conflict between Weiss and her dad had escalated by showing that her card had been declined.

Except that for those instances you mentioned any random characters would have done the job just fine not just the Dust salesman design. For example, Emerald she could have picked anyones pocket to show us she was a theif for myself though it was how she picked Romans pocket that established her theif skills.
