RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

So at best the Lieutenant is maybe about the same level as any individual member of team RWBY.

Roman's roughly the level of a team RWBY member himself!

Sure, the Lieutenant may have won due to Weiss's weaknesses, but he held on until he was able to make an opportunity, and he hits really hard (even with the weakest Aura of the team, the Vytal festival isn't much later and we saw her take some good damage there). Torchwick isn't the super-dodgey type himself, so I think a fight between them would be fairly good... and if the Lieutenant had backup, favoring him.

I was talking about on the train where he's repeatedly insulting the White Fang mooks and calling them animals and such (except the guy driving the train, since he's keeping them all from dying horribly). Also the docks in Volume 1 where he does the same thing. He actually keeps away from the racism when he's speechifying in the warehouse; he just goes with his normal condescending smugness.
Oh, that makes more sense, thanks.

That said though, Neo was with him there, and Neo alone was able to take out an entire airship full of Atlas military personnel, so between the two of them they could have killed everyone in that warehouse if they wanted if Sun and Blake weren't there.
There's also Neo's illusionary Semblance, which is a huge advantage when your enemy don't know about it.

[Note] RWBY Cast Commentary (Volume 1)
So I did the director's commentary for all three volumes, and although their word isn't quite as authoritative I figured the cast could still have some interesting things to say that might be useful/interesting, so here's the Cast Commentary for RWBY Volume 1:

  • Apparently there's a Doctor Who reference just after Salem's introduction. On the clotheslines that Roman and his hired goons walk under there's a huge, multicolored scarf hanging

  • The two thugs with voiced lines were done by two Make-A-Wish kids who were touring Rooster Teeth's offices

  • Ruby's habit of listening to music too loudly to hear anything going on around her apparently is shared by Lindsay

  • Barbara wanted there to be a sound like a squeaky dog toy whenever Yang hugs someone

  • Monty was partly inspired by Naruto, Soul Eater and HunterxHunter for the way Vale and Beacon mix a very "classical" aesthetic (though more European than Japanese, obviously) with modern and even futuristic technology

  • Something they bring up: RWBY voicemails. I'd definitely want a voicemail of Weiss sounding like an annoyed secretary

  • Barbara got into character for Yang's interactions with Ruby by imagining she was talking to her younger brother

  • Every time I rewatch this series I notice something I didn't see before; it's great. Case in point, when Ruby talks about meeting Blake earlier, Yang looks from Ruby to Blake and back again and gets a sly little smirk a few seconds before she drags Ruby off to talk to her

  • Confirmation that the shadow that briefly runs past the bushes just out of Yang's sight was Blake. Barbara jokes she's checking Yang out ("Dang girl, you hot!"), then notes that a lot of people are probably very happy she said that. Lindsay says there are probably a lot of times where Blake just kind of hangs out in the background without people noticing, checking up on people to make sure they're okay without letting them know she's there, etc.

  • Barbara really wants there to be a character named Yin

  • Love that Nora sticks her tongue out a little after booping Ren

  • The scene where Weiss is lost and trying to pretend she isn't was inspired by a time when Kara, Monty, Shane Newville and Chris Martin were all driving to a con in Dallas and Kara was doing that exact thing and Monty and Shane thought it was hilarious

  • Arryn and Barbara say that Blake is almost like an older sister to Yang, in that she often rolls her eyes when Yang is acting silly or immature but goes along with it anyway with a "Yeah, sure" and a little smile

  • Jaune's girly scream is in fact Miles Luna's actual scream

  • Lindsay, Kara, Arryn and Barbara all connect with their characters a lot. There are a lot of times where they refer to the characters as themselves (an example is when Kara says "I told you" when she's talking about Weiss telling Ruby something). They're aware of it and correct themselves but then go right back to doing it

  • They point out that Weiss was still asleep even after the rest of her team was all awake and dressed. Kara herself is like that, and Lindsay says it's funny because you would expect Weiss to be very serious about waking up early to train and stuff, but she's a "pampered princess"

  • According to Lindsay, Ruby is a character who tends to go from one emotional extreme to another. Yang is too, but in a different way in that she's almost always happy, until she's pissed off or concerned. Barbara notes that she tends to be very conscious of what other people think of her and can be self-critical because of that; it explains her awkwardness and discomfort about being moved ahead two years and being in Beacon, but also why she's back to being happy and silly once she has friends and starts feeling like she has a "place" in Beacon

  • They point out just how presumptuous and arrogant it is of Weiss to just walk up to a professor and try to tell him "Ozpin made a mistake and my leader's an idiot; you should make me the leader instead"

  • Barbara points something out: Ozpin's mug is never spilling, even though he waves it around a lot. That's probably just an animation thing, but I like to think Ozpin uses his incredible powers to ensure that whatever he drinks remains at the perfect temperature and doesn't spill

  • Stuff about the bunk beds: Yang is on top of Blake (Barbara: "Yeah she is!"), and Ruby's is hanging from the ceiling rather than propped up using Weiss's bed, presumably because Weiss was like, "I'm not letting you touch my bed." Also, Ruby and Yang made sure to get the top bunks because they're planning to take Weiss and Blake out in one fell swoop one day

  • They make a lot of jokes about how sexy Pyrrha is after the part where she reveals her Semblance. Arryn admits to having made a lot of Blake/Pyrrha jokes at some point, Lindsay points out that going from her profile she's skinny but her boobs are "a force to be reckoned with," prompting even more jokes. Barbara jokes that Pyrrha's boobs hold her Aura, Lindsay says "That's where the poles are controlled," etc.

  • Barbara compares the treatment of faunus to minorities in America during the 1930s, 1940s, etc.

  • Lindsay sums up Penny perfectly: "You're wonderful, you're fantastic, I love everything about you... But you're kinda freaking me out right now."

  • Lindsay really liked the part where Ruby is explaining things to Penny, because a lot of the time it's Ruby who gets lost and needs people to explain what's going on to her. More importantly, when she was reading, she felt like Ruby was thinking "How would Yang explain this?"

[Note] RWBY Cast Commentary (Volume 2)
Next for the Volume 2 Cast Commentary:

  • Minor detail: Tukson's Book Trade has the address 282 27th St. You can see it on the paper when Emerald shows it to the shopkeep

  • Apparently watching Jessica Nigri do her lines for Cinder's a real treat, since she's so bubbly and perky that there's this fun juxtaposition of her being really slinky and evil as Cinder and then suddenly switching gears to ask if she did it right

  • Barbara said she was singing "Time to Say Goodbye" as she was diving out of a plane to go skydiving. I'm not sure if that's a joke or not

  • Much like that huge binder of plans Rwby had (by stealing from Weiss) in "Best Day Ever," Lindsay has a huge folder of notes and stuff for the script to help her voice Ruby

  • All four of them apparently highlight everyone's lines in the scripts with their own colors to help them see the "layout" of the scenes. One perk of a series where everyone is associated with a color, I suppose

  • For that flashback scene where Ozpin sort-of interrogates Blake, they did a table read (i.e. they were actually at a table together doing their lines). Shannon McCormick actually brought a scarf and mug of coffee. According to Arryn, he was actually really intimidating

  • They also bring up the "how could Cinder pass for a student" thing. Lindsay's retort is "Michael Jones still looks like he's in high school."

  • Yang's "One day" to Jaune is meant more as a "One day you'll find someone" than "One day Weiss will like you back"

  • They point out that there are differences in Ruby and Penny in terms of their "innocence." Ruby is very trusting and idealistic, while Penny's innocence is born more out of simply not having much experience with the world, and she doesn't really trust as easily as Ruby does. Of course, unlike Ruby Penny has some very big secrets to keep, so...

  • Confirmation that Weiss styled her hair asymmetrically specifically as a form of rebellion against her controlling dad

  • An example of that trust and idealism shows itself in how Ruby instantly accepts that Penny's a robot and is completely okay with it. To her, Penny is Penny, and the fact that she's not exactly like Ruby doesn't matter at all to her

  • One of the faunus at the White Fang rally is a dikdik

  • They point out that Sun's idea of disguising himself at the rally is to just button his shirt

  • They speculate that Jaune isn't used to being the target of a girl's affections, so he's got a blind spot where Pyrrha's affections for him are concerned

  • I never realized that Blake's line to Sun "I knew you'd look better with a tie" was a call-back to Sun's line "I knew you'd look better without the bow" from Volume 1

  • It's hilarious to me that Sun's idea of dressing up for the dance is literally to change change his shirt and wear a tie the wrong way

  • While pointing out how much of a perfectionist Weiss is at the dance, they speculate that the Schnee household is probably like a museum; everything's in its place and you can't touch anything or you get in trouble

  • "What's a paladin?" - Kara Eberle. Eat your heart out, Spoony Experiment fans. For context: Kara had to look up what a paladin was when she read the script for the episode with the Atlesian Paladin

  • Barbara makes a joke about Blake getting hairballs. When they ask what she'd be licking to do that her answer is "Well, cats lick their crotch..." She then says she wants someone to make that fanart

  • Lindsay said she wants Ruby and Roman to become friends and go to Six Flags together

  • They joke that the Lieutenant has a chainsaw because he just got back from killing a bunch of teenagers who picked him up on the road

  • According to Kara, Coco's minigun is probably based on a nerf gun that she saw Monty playing with once

And finally the Volume 3 Cast Commentary:

  • Arryn Zech isn't there; probably couldn't fit it in her schedule, now that she's living in L.A. to work on her own career. Samantha Ireland (Nora's V.A.) and Miles Luna (yes, he's in both the cast and director commentary) are there instead

  • One of their concept artists is known for only drawing cute boys who look like they could be main characters. She's the one who made the other three finalist guys

  • Confirmation from Miles that losing Pyrrha is going to have a big impact on JNR

  • They say the ABRN fight reminds them a lot of Avengers, then they talk about who is who. Yang is the Hulk, of course (Barbara: "'Cause she loves to smash."), Blake is Black Widow, Weiss is Captain America, Ruby is Tony Stark (and Zwei is Jarvis)

  • Weiss and Yang were the MVPs of the ABRN fight to help justify making them the ones to move on to the doubles round

  • You can see Sky Lark walking around on his own when they're at the noodle place

  • Samantha Ireland, on the monologue as Nora and them questioning if she did that in one take: "I just take a biiiiiiiig breath and just go for it. It's fun! I get a little, like, light-headed by the end of it." An incredibly Nora line, made better because Samantha Ireland's Nora voice is just her normal voice with the pep turned up. Also, Nora's burp is Sam's genuine burp

  • Miles says he and Kerry concluded that Nora gives Jaune the hardest time of anyone on team JNPR, but it's like a teasing mom or little sister trying to be a mom-like character who's like "You know I love you. Seriously though, do more pushups."

  • Miles did a lot of the mo-cap for Qrow, and to make it more convincing downed a lot of whiskey for it

  • Miles points out that Brawnz Ni is a Fairly Oddparents reference because he has bronze kneepads (Lindsay: "Are they going to fight the Crimson Chin at some point?" Miles: "Oh, that's Pyrrha. What are you talking about?")

  • They all commiserate on how intimidating it was to have to act in the same scene as guys like Vic Mignogna and Yuri Lowenthal

  • Another animation thing that had to get cut for time: whenever Nora got charged up with her Semblance, she was going to have a "Super Saiyan" mode where the electricity makes her hair super spiky and there are sparks on her and stuff. They might do it in Volume 4

  • Barbara on team SSSN: "I gotta say, if I was a girl in Beacon, I'd hit it." Miles: "Sun?" Barbara: "All of them. Like, everyone in Beacon, male and female." Kara: "Even Jaune?" Barbara: "Sure, why not?" Miles: "Jaune's like (says it really quiet) 'Yeah!'" Lindsay: "Jaune can go first. He's like the appetizer before the main course." Miles: "Jesus!" Kara (in character): "I call dibs on Neptune!"

  • They talk about how certain kinds of hair and loose clothing are hard to animate, which leads to jokes about seeing Ruby with dreads or cornrows, which leads to jokes about wanting to see hardcore, inner-city Ruby with lots of leather and a tan working as a club DJ

  • Lindsay wants to see more Ruby/Nora interaction. Lindsay and Sam agree that Nora would just take the lead and just kind of drag Ruby into her pace, then Sam and Kara agree that Nora and Weiss interactions would either be a clash for dominance Weiss gave up and stormed off, or Weiss would be like a battered babysitter begging Nora's team to take her back

  • Miles did the mo-cap for Neptune's victory dance. The extended version of that has Neptune accidentally smacking himself in the face

  • They joke that the entire series is Ruby on an acid trip, which is why there's so many colors and Ruby's badass enough to get moved ahead two years

  • They joke that since Winter is basically Weiss+, Weiss treats Ruby like Winter treats Weiss. Kara: "Look at me. You're the Weiss now."

  • Again, Kara and Elizabeth get along insanely well. She came over to watch the first volume of RWBY to get a feel for the series (which was the first time they really met), but they started talking and before they realized it 2 hours had passed

  • They ask Miles if there's sexual tension between Qrow and Winter. His answer is "I guess" and then says that if they do, it's definitely hate sex

  • They notice that the competitors in the tournament all have really good seats, which prompts Miles to sort of decide right there that if you compete, you get front-row seats

  • Miles was the one who first suggested the arena changing environments for each bout. Apparently, they were throwing around ideas for what the arena would be like and Miles just said, "Guys, hear me out: Pokemon."

  • Miles confirms that Torchwick and Neo's relationship is sort of a father-daughter one, and he also says that Neo would probably be much more of a threat if she didn't look up to Torchwick so much. Kind of like that episode of Batman: The Animated Series where Harley Quinn does much better than Joker ever has when she tries to kill Batman for him

  • Qrow's pretty good at taking care of kids, but you don't want to leave him with them for longer than a weekend, because they'll hear some things you probably don't want them to hear

  • They joke about wanting to see Weiss and/or Blake hitting on Qrow in front of Ruby and Yang. Blake: "Have you... ever read Ninjas of Love?" Qrow: "I wrote it."

  • Pyrrha's death, the Fall of Beacon, and Pyrrha putting Jaune in the rocket launcher and sending him away were all things that were planned before they even started scripting the first volume, among other things

  • As soon as Penny appears. Barbara: "It's nice to see her alive again." Sam (in a very Nora voice, i.e. Sam Ireland's normal voice, just very loud): "OH COME ON!" Then later, again in a very Nora voice (and a very Nora line), "I don't wanna talk about it!" She gets like that basically every time they bring up stuff like that

  • Miles: "Oh Penny. You were the least deserving of what happened."

  • They point out the irony of Meg Turney (Neon) talking crap about someone else being top-heavy

  • Confirmation that Neon has more than just the ice Dust, and she changes it by just cracking the glowstick-nunchuks again. Only other one they say she has is fire, though

  • Confirmation that Ruby sending herself flying by shooting Crescent Rose is in fact Gravity Dust

  • Yang's Semblance does in fact make her more durable in addition to stronger. So it's less that she just absorbs the strength of the blows she takes and more that getting hit just fills up a sort of gauge in her Semblance

  • Sam accidentally missed "Beginning of the End" because her kid started crying when she started watching, so she went to go take care of that and when she got back her mind just blanked so she didn't realize it until the next episode happened and she was totally lost

  • As they step out of the elevator together, Glynda adjusts her glasses and Ironwood adjusts his tie. I'm now convinced they were making out on that elevator ride

  • Again, that walk cycle in the long hallway to Amber's chamber was the hardest thing in the entire volume. They needed basically every computer in the office to render it

  • Sam talks about how much she loves Nora's part in "Destiny," especially Nora's workout outfit, which leads to them talking about how they want to make a special Nora workout video

  • Expanding on how Yang is very popular and well-liked and takes a lot of pride in her abilities as a fighter, and how that fight where she becomes a pariah and then gets kicked out the tournament has a very big impact on her because of that

  • Barbara wanted Sun to slap Yang on the ass when she steps up to the fight. They agree that Yang would definitely return the favor

  • Kara, Miles and Sam step out after "Fall" and Gray Haddock, Shannon McCormick and Jen Brown all step in from "Destiny" onward

  • Confirmation from Gray that Marcus Black was an abusive asshole and that's why Mercury killed him

  • Barbara: "It's funny to me how many characters in this series are either full robot or part robot. And that's going to continue." Might be talking about Ironwood, might be confirmation that there's going to be a Penny 2.0 or Yang with a robot arm

  • Confirmation from Gray that part of the reason Mercury threw his fight with Pyrrha in Volume 2 was because he was afraid she'd figure out his legs were prosthetic. Then they joke about Pyrrha using her Semblance to make him a human puppet

  • Gray confirms that "Beginning of the End" and thus the Black trailer as well take place about 6 months before the first episode of Volume 1

  • They bring up the artwork Dishwasher1910 did of both Penny's death before the episode premiered and how it was so eerily accurate that they actually had to check to make sure nobody had leaked the information

  • Remember how adorably excited Velvet gets when Coco tells her to bring out her weapon? Caiti Ward basically reacted the same way

  • Jen Brown is really sad about Penny. Lindsay: "All your dreams are dead." Barbara: "And so is Penny."

  • Shannon points out you can kind of hear ice clinking around in Ozpin's mug, so he guesses that it's scotch on the rocks

  • So at the part where Pyrrha lets loose with her Semblance... Jen: "Ahh! I didn't mean it! I take it back!" And later on... Barbara: "So how does it feel to be a murderer?" Jen: "You know, I kind of like it."

  • Confirmation from Gray that the second trigger on Ironwood's pistol does have a function

  • Confirmation from Gray that each of Velvet's weapon copies last "for a couple of hits." Also, her features shift just a little bit to more resemble whomever she's copying

  • Jen Brown hadn't seen a lot of the stuff in the last two episodes, so you get to see her reactions live. She just becomes completely speechless and stuttering for like half a minute when Yang gets her arm cut off

  • The very last conversation Shannon had with Monty was about how Ozpin would fight

  • Confirmation from Gray that Ozpin's fighting style involves affecting time in some way, though he doesn't want to spoil it too much

  • When Cinder is in Ozpin's office. Shannon (angry Ozpin voice): "Get out of my office."

  • Gray implies the Maiden powers can amplify the effects of Dust, so there might be an actual relationship between them

  • Monty actually informed Jen as soon as they decided she would voice Pyrrha that she would die. He then told her to "make sure you're extra likable so that it really affects people when you die."

  • They've decided who Matt Hullum is going to voice, and the other founders of Rooster Teeth are going to get roles at some point, too (which is good, because in at least one Let's Play Geoff jokes that everyone in Achievement Hunter has voiced someone in RWBY except him)

  • Qrow has stolen Taiyang's clothes at least once

  • Jen does an amazing Ruby voice. I thought for a second it was Lindsay

  • Jen: "Do I get a funeral?" Gray: "A pyre."

So, if Neo saw Roman as a father, and she assumes Ruby killed him, because, from her perspective, when she was blown off the airship, there where still two of them still there. Only one made it off. And, if she's actually more powerful without him, I smell someone craving vengeance. First Cinder, than Salem, and now Neo. Ruby is making powerful enemies.

On the plus side, it would have never happened if Cinder hadn't press-ganged him. So she's not likely to be all buddy-buddy with the other bad guys, at least.

Speaking of bad guys is even cinder alive? Her shock to rubys "grey powers" indicat that she didn't plan for that.

Well, the Grimm Dragon wasn't killed by Ruby's Silver Eyes, so at worst Cinder might be frozen up there with it. Assuming that the Silver Eyes thing only work on Grimm, though, then it's possible that Cinder fled because she realized Hunters were going to start converging on Beacon (Qrow apparently showed up before Ruby even finished losing consciousness) and is thus unharmed or that weird Grimm bug thing that was in her glove got her hand frozen so that team RNJR can fight her at a handicap.

The new RWBY manga chapter is out.
Holy crap that was awesome! :D

OK Yang going outright blocking an attack without looking was plain ol badass.

But also I am super loving the reason why Yang is so protective of her hair, Ruby loves it so she protects it, aw, its reminds me of that comic, so sweet and so powerful, muhahaha I love it!

Well, that's my new headcanon.

Does anyone here have a link to that Tumblr post where Neo uses sign language to tell you she'll kill your family?

I need a link for it. For reasons.

You'd think Ren would be more prepared for that happening.

I was honestly expecting Jaune to either fail at his attempt at a video, but I think the chip bag actually worked.

And why do I get the feeling they got that motivational poster custom made?
