RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

"So how does this magical forcefield barrier that precludes only certain specific physical objects work?"

I don't fucking know, Aura signatures or something, I guess? There should be some record of Cinder and co.'s Aura signatures somewhere, at least Watts for sure, since was definitively imprisoned long enough for that to get logged. And if in doubt, just make it a flat NO, physical law of reality, no questions asked, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200, You Shall Not Pass! Just use your goddamn imagination, Ambrosius, it shouldn't be that fucking hard of a request to answer!

And if you're still adamant about not implementing it until further clarification, fine, just strike that part from the overall request, we'll deal with them ourselves! Just keep the fucking guardrails in there!

If you don't know, he can't know, so it can't be made, also since when were Aura signatures a thing and why would wanted criminals, including three who have never been in captivity as far as we're aware have their on record? Cursing won't change the fact that's not how Ambrosius works.

Please stop shouting and cursing at me, I get you were really into your critique of the casts plan but this isn't a reasonable reaction to someone noting not all of your ideas are seemingly workable.

Oh my God, this has been an episode

Idk if RWBY will jump down the abyss or fall, but I bet they'll have the staff with them. Dunno how they'll ever find their way out otherwise.

Also Winter's line was great, "I've never waved in fighting the enemies of this kingdom, and I won't start now"

Also hoping for some high quality fights next episode, because this episode was lackluster in this regard (everything was too quick and the camera was way too far)

Also Qrow and Robin continue the long time tradition of getting almost no screentime this season, rip in peace.

Edit:

Also
Where's Pietro and Maria?

Pietro in general could have been somewhat useful in combating Watts.

Sorry, wasn't cursing at you specifically, was just using it as hyperbolic emphasis. Point was, I was spitballing suggestions to improve Ambrosius's design so as to prevent this clusterfuck from happening. Okay, so the baddie filter idea as-is can't work, but everything else still should, and that's the important part!

Relic Spirits and their Chambers
]So....we are all in agreement that Jinn = Genie = Desert and Abrosia = Merlin/Fae = hilly grassy plain all fit right?
And we also agree that there is a slight "Chamber is the opposite region of where it is found" yes? With Mistral and it's lush fields and mountains having a desert like Vacuo in the relic chamber, and the frozen north of Solitas has a hilly field like what you could find in Vale in their relic chamber. Thus Destruction's chamber should feel like you are in Mistral, and Choice's chamber should be something like Solitas' tundra.
Well, any ideas one what this could mean for theories on the remaining spirits and their inspirations?
Not exactly opposite, but it does seem like each Relic's vaults are a season out of touch. The Spring Vault has a desert (summer) and the Winter Vault has meadows (spring). So following that theme the Summer Vault should have... I don't know, a lake in the middle of a maple forest? I would assume it's a lake given that lots of people have been speculating for a while that the Sword of Destruction would be similar to Excalibur and the spirit the Lady of the Lake.

And presumably, the Fall Vault has a desolate tundra and presumably, the Crown's spirit is similar to the widow in the story of the Indecisive King. Hell, if we go by the theory that Jinn also doubles as short for Guinevere, I'd even wager the Crown's spirit is a Morgan le Fay analogue.
No Excalibur please. It is so very much been done to death, it robs the rest of the world of representation and it doesn't fit thematically.

Jinn's chamber gave us a Vacuo themed vault.
Ambrosius gives us what clearly a Vale themed vault.

Excalibur and the Lady of the Lake can neither give us a Solitas or Mistral themed vault. And Excalibur is more of a Sword of Choice than it is a Sword of Destruction.

I've said it before but if you want to base a sword of Destruction on something then either the sword of Surtr or the sword used to chain Fenrir would be perfect. Both are from Norse mythology and both are strongly correlated to the end of the world and highly destructive events so either works well as a Solitas themed 🗡️ with Destruction themes.

Additionally both Fenrir and Surtr are jotun (aka devourers/destroyers), so that gives a third type of "spirit" to add to the pile.

And as a bonus with Fenrir he also spent much of his life literally chained down and restrained, specifically by the sword in his mouth even. So that makes him a good fit for the clear "chained and bound by rules" thing the Relic spirits clearly have going on (Jinn is the genie that was trapped in a lamp and Merlin Ambrosius was trapped in a tree/crystal cave or something by Viviane).

And as an additional bonus Fenrir once ate the hand of the war god Tyr for breaking his oath, and one of the ultimate swords in Norse mythology is Tyrfing, aka "Tyr's finger" and which had a wide variety of cool powers including extremely deadly poison, but came with a downside of being cursed so that it would always kill someone when drawn*. So if you combine those myths by claiming they're the same sword then you also have the perfect idea for a Destruction themed rule limiting how much the sword can be used.

And please. No Morgan le Fay for the crown. We already have a fairy stand in with Ambrosius. Let the Crown (or the sword) represent some form of spirit from one of the Asian mythologies so that Mistral is represented properly in the Relic department.

I would be kind of irritated if any of the remaining relics used Arthurian Mythology. We already had Merlin, we don't need more. I prefer each spirit being different and diverse rather than extracting multiple of them from the same source. We already have precedent in Jinn and Ambrosius being from entirely different mythologies.

Gotta say I always wondered at the title. I mean if those were our main characters why was Yang so involved with them?

But now that she's gone it makes so much more sense. Everything up until now was just RWB's prologue. :V:V

Heh, you know, funny thing I noticed about Ambrosius's 'Vacuo Evacuation Pathway':

He is a shitty contractor who doesn't obey basic OSHA regulations like having GUARDRAILS as standard features. Seriously, he prides himself as an architect yet doesn't bother with 'user safety' as a key priority?

But anyways, with the benefit of Hindsight (TM), here's some of my ideas on how to fix Team RWBY's evac plan:

1) First off, the aforementioned GUARDRAILS for the platforms and pathways in the 'central location' dimension. Or, to cover all the bases, have it be like the 'Out of Bounds' barrier you'd find in video games where the player character can't go past. That way, nobody can fall off even if they actively tried. This prevents aerial fights like with Cinder verses Penny, but let's take that as a bonus safety feature.
2) Put signs above the Atlas-Mantle side of the Portal Doors that read "THIS WAY TO VACUO"/"EVACUATION ROUTE TO VACUO"/"[Insert Variant Phrase Here]". Saves RWBY and co. some time in convincing people to use the portals NOW.
3) Change Wiess's verbal slip of "One-way ticket to Vacuo" to "Portal does not close until EVERYONE in Atlas-Mantle are safely in Vacuo". This would enable two-way travel for RWBY and co. in case of trouble like with Cinder and co. And on that note...
4) Bar certain individuals from entering the portals, i.e.: Cinder, Watts, Neo, Jacques, Ironwood, and most importantly of all SALEM. I don't know why RWBY and co. didn't think to include that as a feature, since they know Cinder and co. are still alive and active somewhere within Atlas, so the possibility of them sneaking in with the civilians should've been considered...

In any case, with these four simple fixes, this entire clusterfuck could've been avoided and NO ONE WOULD DIE... EVEERRR...

:tongue::V
And then there's the idea that they could have just been like "Do Raven's Semblance, but better."

I'm purely speculating here, we don't really have much to go on.

I am confused why the Buff Genie built it with giant chasms that lead to who knows what. Like, why not just make them solid tunnels, no one asked for it to be easy to fall into the void.

If they did explain Raven's Semblance and replicated it, I bet it still wouldn't work because her portals only connect to people she has bonded with. Do many Atlesians have people they care about in Vacuo? We know our main groups do, like Sun and Neptune, but they need to evacuate two cities' worth of people and are gonna need dozens of portals.

There's a problem for you.

Why include the part about "needing to connect to people she has bonded with"? Just take the "literally a portal from A to B" part and apply it to scale en masse.

They also didn't ask for it to not be easy to fall into a void.

Ambrosius delivers exactly what he's asked to create; no more, no less.

Ruby: "It's a fucking Semblance! How am I supposed to know!? I can somehow turn myself into rose petals, for the Gods' sake! It's Aura-related metaphysics, not actual physics!"
His answer: "if you don't know, then I can't do it." Remember that Ambrosius is under a strict rule to only be able to build something for which humans can show him the blueprints or bring him the object to copy it, he's supposed to be an help to humanity, not a crutch.
But you're right about the guardrails.

Imagine the Stinger be him going up to the God of Light and going:

"I did as you asked, master. They won't be a bother to us for a while longer."

They can just say "literally a doorway that instantly brings us from point A to point B without needing those lengthy bridges."
They literally explain that in the episode. In order to have the portals open for everyone but also lead to a single location they had to have a middle ground where people could move from one to the other. They used a pocket demension similar to how the vaults work in order to do that. Like all this was explained.

the reason for no guardrails?
they weren't in the plans they showed him.
why didn't they ask?
they didn't know for sure what they would be walking into.
why not ask to block people?
because they didn't think about Cinder and the others following them.
why not base it on Raven's portals?
because they don't have a way to explain it or show it.

also, they are short on time and had limited resources they could work with on top of the Relic Rules they needed to be careful of.
they are humans. they are fallible. they were not going to be able to think of everything.

Whitedragon, this is not about "sucking fun" out of something, this is just clearly stating the facts the show has given us and making it clear to you that we are tired of the cast being made to be idiots because they don't have spacebattles competence or omnipotence. The heroes were clever in how they handled a dire situation, and they are not at fault for anything that goes wrong on the portal path.
