RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Weiss ignores a phone call from dad.
Credit card gets declined.
Daddy doesn't play.

All my posts from SB:
Ruby monologue in the beginning was recap but also confirmed a few things, like Yang learning to fight from Taiyang. He still teaches at Signal but ?hasn't taken missions? since Summer died, and they used to adventure together. Summer was also a hero like Ruby wants to be.

Also the heck was up with Taiyang's model, it looked like they forgot to texture it or something.

Did Weiss' dad cut off her card because she didn't pick up the once, or is this a longer running problem? She specifically didn't contact him or Winter while at the CCT tower pulling sensitive files.

Emerald got a bit more interesting. Mercury... sniffed a shoe. Cinder implied that JNPR's match might be rigged. Their 4th teammate is Neo. C, E, N, M - what does that spell? Assume Cinder is leader to narrow it down, my guess is CNEM - Cinnamon. ...Neo might be using a false name that doesn't start with N though.

JNPR ate an enormous meal right before a fight. Sure are chill about being late to the tournament. Are they foreshadowing the return of Vomit Boy?
I thought Cinder implied that the fight was rigged somehow, or the outcome was obvious?

Though I have to agree with her about it being entertaining, from what we saw of it in the trailer, it's going to be very dynamic even if it is a onesided beatdown.

I wonder who JNPR will send to doubles?
At first I assumed they would send Pyrrha to the doubles. But seeing as the teammates who don't progress get to compete in singles for the win, it might be better to have her compete in those instead, she has tons of solo tournament experience. Which does make Nora and Ren the obvious choice for doubles (if they put Jaune into doubles without Pyrrha to save his ass, they honestly deserve to lose).
Mercury doean't appear to rate Yang as a legitimate threat. Which makes me wonder if he knows about her semblance, because if he doesn't he's gonna get rekt in their 1v1. Legs may be Yang's weakness, but since every kick is a powerup for her, he needs to carefully decide which attacks to land or he'll be entering orbit.

Like Pyrrha, Yang doesn't broadcast her Semblance. Neo may have figured the gist of it out (could also be luck that her style so perfectly countered it), but she works for Torchwick not Cinder... also, mute sadist troll.
Right after Port says that, he says that after the doubles and single bouts are won, the remaining members of the team (I assume this means people who get knocked out during the team battles are out permanently) will fight in 1v1 battles tournament style for the actual win.

Beat that and then they can move to this:

And the winner who gets all the glory is the one who makes it though that.
I read it more as the team matches being a qualifier for entry into the singles tournament. Basically semi-finals: you get some prestige from your team winning, but mostly the reward is that you become a finalist and now have a chance to get the gold.

4v4, 2v2, and then 1v1s are a way to show that a team is capable of both teamwork and making good strategic decisions (choosing who moves on to the next round). The 1v1 tournament, meanwhile, is random matchups and requires little strategy but lots of individual skill... so good thing all the garbage teams got kicked out earlier.

RWBY versus ABRN

Yang and Arslan are constantly moving back and forth, matching blow for blow. It's the strongest part of this battle, just as Arslan is clearly the biggest threat on her team; Yang is serving her role as Tank/Heavy by keeping her occupied while her teammates mop up the rest of ABRN.

Rifle Dude was just standing around, looking lost when Yang slid by... but that's because he was hunting for Ruby, who'd sneaked away to snipe him. Only she gave away her location to assist Yang, which allowed Rifle Dude's bro to find her. Staff Dude was clearly overconfident and perhaps insufficiently eager to beat on a little girl who was laying down, and so hesitated. Weiss, who had probably been playing her own game of hide-and-seek with Staff Dude, chose now to Tag him It.

Now, the weakest part of this presentation is not making it clear that Ruby and Weiss were playing cat-and-mouse with Rifle Dude and Staff Dude. If they'd shown us that BEFORE Yang's dueling with Arslan, we would look at Rifle Dude being lost and say, "Aha, Ruby is winning!" rather than "Dude, what are you looking for?!"

Anyway, Rifle Dude is now frozen and he dropped his weapon, so his following absence from the action is excused.

After Weiss kicks away Staff Dude, she and Ruby attempted to double-team him, but now that he's defending himself against two opponents, he's taking the situation seriously and manages to block and evade ALL of their attacks. Their teamwork starts off solid, but towards the end it just looked like Weiss and Ruby fucking up badly. That might be fumbling the correography, but I can accept what Rooster Teeth was going for.

But then my suspension of disbelief shatters with Blake doing NOTHING while Reese takes a time out from their duel to go unfreeze Rifle Dude. I cannot even.

I mean, Reese falling for the obvious Shadow Clone trick despite knowing Blake has Shadow Clones (she SAW them! she HIT one!) was just headbangingly stupid, but it didn't suffer the inexplicable pacing issues of Blake doing nothing about Reese's team-assist.

Things improve once again because of returning to Yang and Arslan.

Rifle Dude is getting into the action, either trying to shoot at Yang from behind or Weiss, but Weiss and Ruby apparently got their teamwork back together and throw Staff Dude into Rifle Dude. From this point on, it's Weiss the White Wizard going to town with Gravity and Ice Dust, kicking the dudes while they're down. Ruby declines to kick people while they're down when she could be sniping them, but Weiss clearly has this handled.

Arslan apparently got a big enough lead on Yang that she could take the time to free her dudes, though there's no explanation for why Ruby doesn't snipe her, why Weiss doesn't throw Dust at her, or where Blake is.

But then Team RWBY comes back together with a BEAUTIFUL full-team combo attack.

I especially love Ruby turning herself into a launch catapult, but special mention has to go to Blake and Yang (and Ruby) using the same sling-shot move as against the Paladin, but with Ruby's assist letting Blake sling Yang TWICE.

So yeah, some weak spots, but a lot of strong ones.

People can squee about how cool Reese's weapon is, but for me, it's just mashing together two tools she actually wanted to keep separate.

She should be able to SHOOT while she skates, and skate while she shoots, but she decided, "Nah, I want to do one or the other exclusively at a time, to limit my options!"

Transforming weapons are supposed to INCREASE your options!

If the season has more Neo then it's okay.
If the season has more Neo and Roman then it's better.
If the season has more Neo and Roman and there's some hint as to what the hell Cinder's plan is then it's even better.
If Prodman doesn't deliver next episode then the season is over before it starts.

Well, the RT flash player hasn't gotten any better...
And I used to use a program to download the stream, so then I could play it back without the annoying stuttering, but apparently their flash player blocks the episode up into individual files, so I can't do that anymore.

I'm hyped, but I also feel like my hype is mitigated somewhat. I mean, I feel like we've seen most of this episode before in the trailers and what not.

Hopefully, I'll achieve full hype once we get deeper into the season.

Well look at it this way, the most of the stuff we were teased was in this first episode so imagine what they have in store later.

Also Weiss has really improved when it comes to her ice tricks....actually if Weiss was cut off from her funds I wonder how that'll effect her fighting since she might not have the supplies to keep using Dust like she usually does.

Just finished the first episode. Okay, action was pretty awesome, I have high expectations.

So the crystals in the arena were made of Dust? Cool.

Oh god, the credits said it was Written by three people, and one of them was Monty Oum.
this will be the last season where we'll see that.

Is Weiss at the point where she's basically one of those money classes that rely on money to power their attacks, therefore if she runs out she's pretty much screwed?

I mean, she still got her glyphs so that shouldn't be too bad.

Probably not but it will effect her overall power and options.

I mean she brought suitcases of the stuff when she arrived and we don't know how much she used but it certainly isn't cheap.

Eh, we don't really know how much Dust Weiss actually uses when she fights. She could use a lot, or she could just use a relatively small amount when she uses the effects of them. She did bring quite a bit of Dust with her when she initially came, although that could be because the flexibility of her fighting style is entirely reliant on her using Dust.

She does seem to still have her Glyphs, which I believe are independent with the Dust that she uses until she adds individual effects.

If you'll notice, Weiss didn't actually use any of her own Dust during that fight.
The stadium they were fighting on was made out of fire and ice Dust. When Weiss used her ice attacks, they manipulated the Dust the stage was made out of.

Now I can just imagine Weiss just taking pieces of the Stadium in future matches and just hiding them in her pockets as she exits the arena. She obviously wouldn't do that because of her pride, but it would still be funny. :lol

On the subject of Weiss one line from the opening song has me worrying, specifically the line "Mirrors will shatter, crushed by the weight of the world". Now this might just be me being paranoid but assuming that Cinder's plan involves causing political upheaval and chaos wouldn't causing the destruction of the Schnee Dust Company be a pretty nice target?

Actually, of the two Dust attacks she used (i'm watching this repeatedly), only the first used her own Dust, where teh Dust appeared out of the air. The second had the Dust rise up out of the stage. Normally, I'd just assume that this was ice manipulation, but there were two instances that showed that the red and white crystals on the stage were actually Dust. The most obvious one was when staff dude broke off a bit to give to his teammate. The second use happened before that, when Ruby shot the crystals, which caused them to activate and freeze that other dude's feet.

Actually, watching the match again, I think Reese only added the gun component to her board out of obligation. She only ever used it when her board was split apart into them, and when she got back up she went right back into using it as a board. Seems more like a situational weapon that she doesn't plan to use regularly. I don't know much about guns, but I imagine there are some people that just aren't the best of shots.

The episodes are also available on Crunchyroll three hours after the public release on RoosterTeeth.com, if that helps: RWBY on Crunchyroll!

Her tuition is probably funded separately from her monthly allowance, maybe her school supplies too. I wouldn't be surprised if she could also just call up Schnee Dust Co. and ask for Dust to be delivered directly.
