RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

And someone on SB just pointed out something very interesting about Cinder's expression when Pyrrha asks about destiny.

She actually cried a little.

"You poor, poor fool. Destiny is a lie, an illusion created so that people will think their lives matter, that they don't live a pointless existence doomed to be snuffed out in cold oblivion. There is no such thing, not for you, or for any of us. And now I shall end the pleasant dream, to show Humanity what really waits for them in the dark."

Yet we don't see Ozpin or Cinder use dust, or Phyrra. I mean, we can assume that maidens are special, but from what I've seen both aura and semblances are way more impressive than dust.
Presumably it meant for the average people who can't make physics their bitch on a dime. :V

And I dont buy your explanation on her reasoning because Cinder has NEVER shown that type of behavior. If she had given something I might have but she never shows any remorse or respect to anything as far as we have seen so her suddenly caring about Pyrrha's body doesnt match up with the personality we have been presented this whole time.
Silly you, Cinder hasn't shown any personality.

That kind of contradicts what she said.

We actually do see it quite a bit, Ruby and Yang use bullets made from dust, Weiss's rapier uses dust so she can launch multiple elemental attacks Blake uses dust bullets especially the elemental ones that Weiss gave her in Season 2 to amplify her semblances abilities giving her clones elemental properties and Pyrrha may also use dust in her bullets as well. Ozpin on the other hand is a mystery since we have no idea what his semblance is so if he uses any dust to augment his abilities we haven't seen it.

We also dont know anything about Ozpin's style all we see is a few attacks where he uses the cane like a sword.

Its safe to say any weapon that uses a gun is most likely using basic dust bullets.
We know Weiss, Raven, and Blake have used Dust.
Cardin and that one girl gale I think it was also seem to have dust gem weapons.
More then likely a LOT of weapons use dust and the show doesnt really mention it because its so common its implied.

Beyond being a smug "chessmaster" who thinks she can account for everything.

Except for the latest episode, where she finally gets to see what it looks like when something you didn't account for shows up and has enough power to utterly wreck you and your plans.

If the World of Remenant video on Dust was anything to go by, if we want to see the power that harkens back to the days when humanity first discovered it, the raw power that gave dust its place, we'd need to see a dust specialist/'mage' (or at least more besides Weiss/Blake when she's adding it to her semblance) or someone who has woven dust into their clothes/body

I'm not saying that people don't use dust, I'm saying that the most impressive feats that we have seen were achieved with a semblance and not dust (Except maybe Penny's green death cannon). Weiss's huge sword summoning, Yang destroying Roman's robot with a punch, Phyrra's magnetism, whatever it is Ozpin was doing (unless it was magic :V).

Though maybe it's like what some of the other posters have said. Maybe dust is referred to as the thing that allowed humans to fight the Grimm because it gives the majority of humanity (those without superpowers) the power to fight too.

There seem to be two major complaints about the finale:

1. Silver Eyes came of nowhere and ruined the tension of the climax! Why continue watching if Ruby is going to get special snowflake powers?
2. The climax was too dark! WBY are split up and in despair, why continue watching if things are this low? It's going to take forever to reunite RWBY!

For me, the Silver Eyes were what saved the climax from being too dark. First, the reveal made Pyrrha's last stand feel like it had accomplished something even though she basically committed heroic suicide.

Second, the power-up aspect justified Ruby's continued involvement in the plot after the power level escalations. This season I found it hard to feel invested in RWBY's tournament antics when fighters like Winter and Qrow were introduced and gave much more impressive feats. A hidden power gives me reason to think Ruby will still be relevant to the plot.

Third, it justified Ruby's optimism in the face of tragedy. When faced with apparently unbeatable opponents like Mercury and the Roman+Neo tag team, Ruby didn't give up even when it seemed the villains had utterly won. Penny brutally murdered in front of her eyes? Take up her sword and defend her remaining friends! Roman literally beats her into the ground with a cane as he tries to verbally crush her idealism? Keep fighting back and tell him he's full of shit!

Cinder just killed Beacon's Champion and it seems nothing can challenge her? Fuck off! There is still hope, and Ruby will become the hero who inspires it.

As for WBY taking forever to recover: Weiss made her decision earlier in the volume, she is capable of confronting her family now and will probably be the first to rejoin the party. Blake shown to be jumping around Vale... camera pans to Glynda doing repair work in Vale -> Hmm, I wonder if they'll meet at some point.

Yang does seem rather broken even if Taiyang thinks she'll bounce back. However, her last scene shows her looking out at a red-eyed raven. This makes me think she's finally getting her mommy issues arc. And like hell she isn't getting a fabulous new arm, we all saw Robo-Daddy become best girl.

Probably C. Pyrrha still did pretty good though considering she used her Semblance to force a broken elevator to go up a tower, which probably wasn't cheap on Aura. She is best Discount Magneto.

You take that back!

Joking aside, I never really had much attachment to Torchwick's character. Sure he had some funny lines, but I honestly didn't really care too much compared to the other villains (aside from Adam EDGE Taurus, who's at the bottom). The most I would've liked to see from him would be his connection to Neo.

Eh...

I like Cinder. I really do. However, imo, she kinda pales in comparison to Roman. He has that roguish charm, the snark, an amazing design and an Intresting personality. It was so much fun to watch him speak and prance around that I found myself rooting for him at times.

Seriously, I'd rather see Roman return than Penny, who is one of my favorite characters. That's how much I'm attached to the guy.

So my prediction for the next season is that they are going to use the splitting of Team RWBY to explore aspects of the world that we haven't seen that much of yet and give the girls some character development.

Through Weiss we are obviously going to find out more about her family life and Atlas which should also trigger a continuation of her character arc, if I had to guess the main part of this arc will involve her Father being even more controlling of her life. This arc will basically culminate in her standing up to her father and leaving to go be with her friends. Additionally this might result in a weapon change for Weiss as she can no longer rely on her family to supply her with the dust she needs.

Blake's part of the story will probably focus on the White Fang or just Faunus in general. Because lets face it there is no hiding the fact that the White Fang played a large and noticeable role in what just happened, which when coupled with preexisting prejudices and the sheer bleakness of the situation will cause racial discrimination to go through the roof. Additionally we could probably delve deeper into her backstory and maybe explore why she is always running away from her problems.

With Yang it will obviously include her recovering from her injury and learning to cope. However this would also be the perfect opportunity for some backstory on the rest of her family, it's possible that Taiyang will use a story about how his team fell apart (which might include a flashback where we get some more of Summer and Raven's personalities) as a way to motivate her and get her to try and keep her from making the same mistakes.

Finally we have Ruby who is obviously going to make up the main plot thread. I think that the trip to Mistral is going to be an arc in and of itself, the group is going to come across a few villages outside of the kingdoms and we will get more world building from there, also it would be an excellent chance to explore Nora and Ren's backstories. Additionally there will be how Jaune is coping with ....what happened and possibly even an Arc where Ruby helps him come to terms.

I actually agree except on one point
Qrow and Winter. while they are far more powerful then RWBY at the moment they are a taste of what we can expect from them down the line.
Winter is clearly a powerful warrior and Qrow has flat out been stated to be among the most powerful if not THE most powerful in the series so comparing them isnt really fair.
But it does show us the level of power a fully realized Hunters are capable of powers that they really arent all that far from in reality. As we can see in the last couple of episodes they are at a level where I think "normal' Hunters would be hard pressed to find fault and they are still learning.

Hopefully Tai's weapon isn't a sniper rifle. But, if it is, at least Ruby didn't get his aim.

Very serious. (not in the sense of actually doing it, I'm not a crazy person)

Killing characters is great, but there's more to pulling it off then just pulling the trigger. It has to be set up. It has to have the right weight to it. It has to spaced out from other events so that the reader's emotional reaction flows the way you intend it to.

As far as I can figure, they kept Pyrrha from just dying in the vault purely for the sake of an unnecessary kiss scene, a fight whose result was blindingly obvious and a hamfisted climax where the main character suddenly unlocks powers that somehow failed to unlock when Penny died, despite the obvious comparisons.

Not to mention Cinder having her banana peel moment when her plot armour abruptly ran out.
......... So on one hand I disagree with basically everything you said. On the other hand its late, I'm tired and I'm just not motivated enough to write a thorough rebuttal. So I will just say that I loved this episode and thought practically everything in it was done perfectly.

The silver eyes reveal threw me for a loop for a second but I felt they handled it extremely well. It didn't do anything more than put a bandage on a giant gaping wound so appearing so suddenly didn't feel like a copout. Shit is still fucked, just not as fucked and that reveal wouldn't have worked if it was foreshadowed strongly enough that we're all sitting there thinking "any second now Ruby will unlock her super powers and sweep this under the rug." Some reveals work better as a surprise.

BEHOLD, THE TRUE VILLAIN OF RWBY

No, but seriously, I am on the Salem train chanting "WITCH!" over and over to a beat I don't quite recognize, but just know.

Alternate plot twist:

Ozpin: You have.... silver eyes.

Ruby: Are they like mom's do they mean I have special powers?!

Ozpin: No, dear, your mother had blue eyes. It just means that your father cheated.

Ruby: ...

Ozpin: *coffee sip*

Wait shit no it would mean that Summer cheated!
Unless.....
Summer knew the truth and Taiyang killed her to cover up the evidence???!?!??!?!??!?!:o

Fun fact, on the recent RWBY stream a few or more weeks back, when one of the crew members said that the finale for volume 3 would be around or on valentines day weekend, Miles asked something along the lines of "Wait, are you serious?" and then when someone responded with a yes, he said, "Oh my god, that's perfect!" while laughing maniacally.
Happy Valentines Day from Miles Luna. :p

My bet is that Qrow's entire team was working with Ozpin and Ruby and Yang were both conceived to carry on the fight if they died before Cinder made her move. Yang as a replacement shapeshifter and Ruby as a replacement Silver Eye.

So... Fire Emblem eugenics. Did either of them get Galeforce?
