RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

This is such a contradiction.

"That's what I love about RWBY! Everyone is either just straight up good or evil! But they aren't perfect, have shades of grey, and most of the villains aren't actually evil!"
Actually what happened there is that you read too quickly, and thought it was "Black or White" when what they said was "Black and White"

(Something that I also did. I had to reread the sentence a few times to realize what happened)

Like any other show, RWBY does have a few spots where I don't think the writing works, but not in any sort of whole show destroying way. Occasionally there's there something weird (the Raven/bird thing or some issues with how some of the White Fang plot feels like well meaning white dudes writing a very special episode with a few unintentional unfortunate implications). Overall, though, RWBY is not a badly written show and there's been quite a lot of improvement over time.
A lot of those feel like things that they weren't sure where they were going and didn't know who to talk to early on when things were introduced, especially with the White Fang not getting enough detail to make it not come across poorly early on, and never having enough time to fix the foundations of that plotline. Why can't all these people being weird about wanting to rewrite the show focus on polishing the things that actually didn't work instead of making up issues so they can ship Cardin and Velvet or make Roman a hero?
We've got the comic preview!

So yeah this is a thing

he’s very polite
So anyone exposed is having what should be their theoretical semblances activated? Reminds me of the opening of Static Shock.
not the biggest fan of this to be honest.
Unlocking aura just by being near someone seems a bit cheap.
Could be living in DC, or at least Gotham, is stressful enough to activate people's auras, and this is them finally getting the results of that.

In the case of Roman, because people all too often see a character being flashy and somehow miss all the ways in which they're a cowardly scoundrel with no real redeeming features, in over their head and too cowardly to do anything to escape, and capable of being utterly curbstombed by a single first-year student, instead deciding that they're badasses who 'know how the world really works' and everyone should listen to their miserable cynicism, even if it was a large part of what got them killed in canon.

Cardin and Velvet? Who fucking knows what passes through the head of someone that'd pair a polite young lady up with her bully who is also a racist towards her.

Yeah can't see why someone who was a participant even under duress in a terrorist plot to unleash a horde of shadow killer monsters is somehow likeable.

I can actually - vaguely - see the Cardin/Velvet thing. Not that I want it to happen or whatever; I don't like Cardin at all. It's like... redemption. My favorite trope. Like Vegeta or Zuko or Darth Vader. Redemption. Not to compare those great characters to Cardin of all people. We all have that wish in us, to be redeemed. No matter what it is we want to be redeemed for. Big or small. Redemption. Hope. If this ignorant person can change for the better, could the world? Could I?

Though, in this case, there are a lot of uncomfortable, icky undertones because of the 'romance' aspect, I think. Not to mention the possibility that Cardin doesn't even go through any growth in those hypothetical stories to justify the absurdity of the pairing.

I've also been drinking whiskey though, so what the fuck do I know lol

One of the issues that I have with that was Sienna being killed right after she was introduced. I wanted to see more of her and I hate how people just throw Adam's worst qualities onto her.

Room's there to expand on her character, so why don't we just...y'know, do that and not lionize the misanthropic stalking psychopath?

Hell, go the full nine yards and give Sienna some backstory that you can play around with. I personally headcanon that she, Ghira, and Kali were all childhood friends growing up, and for a bit of romantic comedy, I picture Sienna as having had a massive crush on Kali, who both wasn't aware of her friend's feelings and was already in love with Ghira. Sienna was heartbroken, but she took it in stride and decided to play matchmaker between Ghira and Kali, wanting her best friend to be happy.

Good news was that Ghira was equally in love with Kali as much as Kali was in love with him.

Bad news is that they turned into absolute tongue-tied dorks when they tried to confess their feelings, which led to them always bolting in the opposite direction of each other, usually running into something or someone in the process. Sienna's palm was practically welded to her face with how dumb her friends were being around each other.

People remember Roman and Neo's excellent teamwork in Volume 3 while also ignoring that it was basically two grown ups wailing on a teenage student (So the skill demonstrated isn't exact amazing with that in mind) and Roman literally dies because he decides to rant in the middle of the Grimm invasion about how awesome he is.

I'm convinced Adam's popularity is pure vibes based.

There is the angle taken with Emerald, in that she was in too deep before she realized the truth of Cinder and the overall mess. But given Cinder had Roman running operations in Mountain Vale, that approach becomes harder to justify with him. And it REALLY becomes hard to justify when you keep in mind Neo was loyal to him, not Cinder, making the time he spent in lockup during V3, out of Cinders reach, but apparently unwilling to screw over her plans that much more noticeable.

Yeah with Adam I can't help but be reminded of General Grevious from Star Wars where people decided on the basis of his appearance and the questionable Canon of his pre ROTS appearances that he was this unstoppable badass Jedi killer.

Only Adam had even less canon material, all of it having him be happily violent, and a even more generic edge lord appearance :p

Why, then we'd assume that Jacques Schnee was an asshole that didn't care about innocent lives. And he was! Just like Adam!

Ahh yes nothing more attractive than a man who's very picture makes you want to strangle him

Try finding a picture of this man where he doesn't look like he wants to talk about his NFTs, it's impossible.
If you're enough of a whothefuck, you will get popularity poll votes from people who forgot they dislike you.

Also Jacques is an equal opportunity asshole. He's perfectly willing to screw over anyone and everyone in the pursuit of money, so can we really call him racist? :p
One of the things I love about v8 is whether or not he deserved to die like he did is that one of the last things Jacques realized was that even after everything Weiss was still a better person than him.

Really explains her semblance and why Yang is still a bit short tempered even now. She's had to bottle her own stuff up and like anyone who does that without a proper outlet will erupt eventually the more she tries to hold it back.
