RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Since Penny's weapon ended up down there with them, does that mean her body fell too?
I would think so, and if they find it, that may be the final blow that leads to the emotional breakdown of Ruby that everyone's expecting. But my question is why does Penny's maiden blades still exist? Shouldn't it have vanished when she died?

Someone get Weiss a pillow to scream into, either because of the Ever After or the Bees.
To be fair Weiss seems happy for the Bees so her frustration with them earlier was probably "When are they gonna be honest to each other about their feelings?"

Edit:
Completely seperate topic This isn't official word but I feel like this person would know more about the scene then the average fan

While I'm enjoying the new volume so far, all the cheesy anime-style gag effects seem very out of place. The show has definitely used them before, but never this frequently. Something I've really liked about RWBY is the way that they capture the characters' feelings through body language. Adding sweat drops, floating text bubbles, and 2-frame gags feels like a step down from the quality of the last couple of seasons and part of me wonders if there's been some meddling behind the scenes to attempt to make the show's animation style more familiar to people who primarily watch anime since the show is exclusive to Crunchyroll now.

Has anyone else been thrown off by these things?

Possible, but I think it's an Ever After thing. We'll had to wait for scenes back on Remnant to confirm or deny that theory

Rule 2: Don’t Be Hateful, or, "Advocating for the violent actions against a show's writer just because you don't like aspects of a show is very inappropriate."

Yeah no I haven't laughed once at Volume 9 so far. The comedy has been egregiously terrible and repetitive, and it's doubling down on all the things I already hated about how Volumes 7 and 8 wrote comedy.

I wish whoever keeps writing in the "Character moves very choppily and speaks in an exaggerated tone to convey a whacky joke" scenes a slashed tire.

As I said on SB, I'm cool with the humor because it doesn't interrupt the serious moments. I never feel like the jokes ever reduce the impact of Ruby's misery for example. It's not like Thor Love and Thunder which was utterly terrified of having one honest and sincere moment. The humor isn't stepping on the Drama.

Personally I think the humor works considering the setting, things are more animated because they're in a far less grounded place compared to Remnant.

It's like there are themes.

Yeah, like I said elsewhere, if the exaggereated effects continue on Remnant, then I'll have concerns.

OK since you have clearly not liked the show for at least the last few volumes and are now wishing for the destruction of people's property simply because you don't vibe with the jokes....maaaaaybe you should stop bothering with the series and spend your time with other media.

That's probably hyperbole, but your overall point still stands.

I made a post on this!

(Rummages around Tumblr)

Ah here it is!

I was thinking about how much I hate FMAB's tendency to overlay comedy on serious moments and why its not bothering me in RWBVY V9 and realized why.

I think its mostly letting the serious moments be serious and the fun moments be fun. With the crossover coming when someone is having an existential crisis in the background, but the others are unaware of it or don't know how to respond. Which just serves to throw it into stark contrast, rather than comedy overwhelming a serious moment.

Good example of that for me was Yang meeting Little. Emotional moment with Ruby, a Little question to separate that moment from the next one, TACKLE-HUG!!

Mhm, or heck, the shift from Ruby curling up and crying in episode 1 to, seeing Little struggling and helping, and then being flabbergasted they can speak.

There's a good sense of delineation between the jokes and the sadness done through framing and scene structure that help stop the jokes from ruining the tone.

Plus as noted, when they avoid that its done in such a way as to contrast the humor against the tragedy IE:

Weiss freaking out and knocking her own ass out while Ruby just is like... Completely unresponsive. Yang & Blake look caught between the spectacle and Ruby and have no idea what to do and it just helps emphasize how checked out and consumed with grief Ruby is. We see a shorter version of it after Little gets her the sword too, with how Yang, Blake & Weiss left the town while Ruby was lost in shock and grief. Its the contrast of horror and humor, rather than one overwhelming the other.

My FMAB point is also signified here I feel, by contrasting the glorious 03 with the meh Brotherhood:

Which also serves to demonstrate my point regarding how jokes can overwhelm rather than contrast or distinguish a serious scene.
