RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Oh come on That was just a typo, Not like I called them a name (that I missed the first time posting it and I fixed)

But I'm serious. I never already cared for ironwood and I just think he's a thug that along with fucking Adam gets too much defending.
He's a tyrant who shot political opponents. And try to leave mantle to die.
I'm saying using such language at all is liable to cause you problems, the mods want things cool, calm and collected here and cussing out other people's ideas isn't liable to get that.

I agree, but again, we've all had this discussion so many times, psy is never going to change their mind or you yours so it might be best to drop it before it becomes a thing that dominated for like ten pages again.

As an aside, anyone got any theories on the new characters inspirations? Given the thorns and glass and such, some have suggested Cinderella as a basis, which is rather fitting given Cinder's history with Atlas.

Sorry But that's how I was raised. My family has a sailor's tongue in more way than one.
(Although truthfully I get it from my mother)

Oh my God, wasn't cinders original power more on the lines of manipulation of glass and such.?
Because do for a fact I remember her not being a firecaster. That was the maiden powers as far as I remember yet. If they retconned it to just be

Like I distinctly remember the fire she used in volume 3 was just dust woven into her clothing

The Olympics is just as analogous, And you know what? Even they don't allow foreign military on the hosting nation soil for such events.

Sure. The Nazis could hold a military parade or whatever for the 34 Olympics but they couldn't not do that on any other soil because this was Germany hosting the games.

Have they done it into a different nation that would have been in violation of sovereignty and could be seen as an act of war

They still didn't fucking know that at the time and is no excuse.

Again he said that himself, They are less effective, more flashy and expensive toys.
And he's still violating vales sovereignty as a nation.

Your Realize that's the fucking point, Salem's plan was to Ponce on that show a fear. And literally turn those robots against the people You don't remember that?

That's no fucking excuse in diplomatic relationships. He is a visiting political member of A neighboring country. He has no right nor privilege on Vale soil.
Point with the Nazis and Olympics so no counter.

Except they would know Vale would be targeted because the Fall Maiden is keyed specifically for Vale's Vault, so chances are likey they're gunning for Vale's Vault. You don't jack the keys to someone's car and go for someone else's.

With the way the "time of peace" was set up, everyone was fucked one way or another. Like, if Ironwood didn't bring his army, no sweat. Salem can just prey on the fear of the Faunus being persecuted or the civilians' fear of being safe and boom, Fall of Beacon is back on track.

Oh god, season 9, where are you.
Being held hostage by Batman and Superman, the final bosses of the RWBY hiatus.

That is one of the things we have confirmation as being a retcon.

The Maidens as a concept didn't exist, and were actually a last minute addition by Monty between the development of V2 and 3.

Either way, I like the Maidens and personally think their inclusion was a neat addition.
Oh, it's not that I don't like the maidens. I just think that cinder getting fire powers From that power and then getting retroactively making it her semblance

was dumb.

Oh my God, wasn't cinders original power more on the lines of manipulation of glass and such.?
That's her Semblance, producing and manipulating glass, but it does produce heat as a side effect that leads to her being able to cause detonations with her arrows and is very good at using fire with her Maiden magic.
Like I distinctly remember the fire she used in volume 3 was just dust woven into her clothing
In Volume Two it was implied (merely implied due to the later addition of the Maidens to the story) that she was using dust to help produce the glass-looking crystals she used against Ruby during the infiltration, likely actually her semblance boosted by the magic (mixed with dust manipulation) leading to Ruby being unsure if it was her semblance of not, but Volume Three had it as full magic throughout.
Except they would know Vale would be targeted because the Fall Maiden is keyed specifically for Vale's Vault, so chances are likey they're gunning for Vale's Vault. You don't jack the keys to someone's car and go for someone else's.
That doesn't mean your neighbor puts a bunch of guns around it to try to scare the thief away instead of asking the one who had their keys stolen what they need help with.

But no robots turning on everyone in the middle of it and Atlas isn't implicated in any of it, leading to Ironwood's paranoid death-spiral.
Fuckin' hell. World's finest, my ass.
They don't have a choice in it either. Blame WB and now Discovery for being corporate assholes. Maybe RT's management for agreeing too, but considering what happens to anyone who even mildly inconveniences the executives that might not be as on them this time.

She had some fire-related stuff before becoming a Maiden because it was her Semblance, as seen with her having it in the flashback episode in volume three.

Ironwood did have the right to bring his army to Vale, the Vale council gave it to him. Like that was a plot point and part of the tension that was dividing Ozpin and James in the first place.

This is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friends. Somebody started it again, desperate to defend a dictator that betrayed his allies and murdered government officials, because he could occasionally do nice things!

Hmm, little off key at the end there...

Iron-headed, thank you. He earned that plate :)

After ranting about Oz not trusting him, while he wanted to send his fleet off away from the city he ended up defending.
And this is why I wished tin Man have been curved stomped by Ruby for his ever growing series of annoying to downright insane authoritarian actions.

And I don't fucking care that they try to give him the semblance of OCD on Max everyday.

Just say that little tin Man was far more adept at cohesion with his mechanical appendages. Or make him like Raiden. (Not the
at the nerd side But he can slow down shit with extremely expensive but very useful processers

I think this is more on the limitations of the engine and laziness of the writers(why Vale didn't have a standing army like it should as a continental Nation!

Personally, I would have preferred a larger world with far more countries. Some big some small with a richer history?(Even if we go by the map we could still split them up and do tinier countries and have more fun. I think they are cribbing from Avatar

Also, I wonder how it feels like for Ozpin,
He was the one who raised up Atlas following the Great War and to see it succumb to its own corruption and rot
must hurt

Being incredibly stubborn and able to power through pain is an explanation. It is not an excuse.

Eh, his final fate was karma enough for me. Knowing Salem never considered him more than a pawn, that it was Cinder who played him like a fiddle, and knowing his choices destroyed the nation he swore to defend.

To be fair it's a setting conceit that no nation other than Atlas has a military, that total demilitarisation was part of the truce following the Great War (with all would be soldiers instead going to the Huntsmen academies and owing no allegiance to any one Kingdom). Now, there can be a debate about how realistic a prospect that is, but it is a part of the setting, and a fairly important one that's referenced a fair few times. And it's thematic - Oz himself says 'an army is a symbol of conflict'.

And as we've seen with Anima and the Grimm, that demilitarization ended up being more of a hindrance for Remnant as a whole once shit truly hit the fan and the Grimm attacks increased in number, thus causing forces to spread so thin that it made Salem's forces move with much more ease...

I mean - in Anima it was more that Lionheart deliberately sent all Huntsmen in his Kingdom to go get killed. So... that still would have happened with a military.

Ironwood was; an ally, an antagonist, The Tin Woodsman, the Aesop of The Astrologer, Captain Ahab from Moby Dick, and a modern day take on Greek Tragedies.
Ironwood was not; in the right at the finale of V7, a villain, or a poor woobie that suffered character assassination

Remnant could not of had more than the current nations for both in-universe and out of universe reasons.
In universe - Grimm and 80 years of peace after a big global war that saw pretty much all sides put back where they started
out of universe - a balance between to much and to little in regards to locations to go through, and also baked into the Balance of 4 the show has had since the beginning.

as for the lack of standing armies for most of the world, much like with the Floating City of Atlas, it was due to the good intentions of The Last King of Vale/Previous Oz Life that came with flaws and mistakes.

Any other points from today I am missing?

You forgot the big one.

Ironwood was a good character before Volume 8 made him an ableist stereotype so badly written, it retroactively ruined his entire character and Volume 7 by proxy.
