RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

I can see the throughline to the argument. I don't think it holds together, but hey, it's better than more adam apologism, right?

Not to call away from the panic that is happening to talk about character development, but I’m gonna Weiss used to want to be the leader, used to think she deserved it more than any of her teammates....

*Laughs in bitter knowledge of the future*

I'm sure that second part won't be important soon. As a side note, I love their character observations.

TRAUMA! MORE TRAUMA! Also more bitter future knowledge laughing.

I mean, if any of what the post says is true, and having not watched Vol 8 yet (and only knowing the wiki explanation), it'd legit make Rhodes hella dumb af. Like, actually, legit. Like "what the fuck are you talking about, Jesse?" tier of holy shit that's some super dumb fucked up logic dude is running on.

Well, he knowingly left a child he knew had been purchased as a slave in the 'care' of her owner/abuser for years, so... yeah. Dumb as dogshit.

Random thought: There's long been this perception in the fandom that Weiss would be the most used to cold weather out of Team RWBY because she's from Atlas, but when we actually got to Atlas it turns out it's so climate-controlled that people are having sunny family picnics in casual dress at the same time that people in Mantle are at serious risk of freezing to death (and even before Jacques let Watts turn the heat off to cause that crisis, people in Mantle all wear appropriate cold-weather clothes). Weiss probably hadn't actually had to deal with (as opposed to just playing in) snow or other inclement weather until she left Atlas.

This also reminds me that back in Volume 4, Klein complains about how cold Jacques keeps his office. I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but that sounded like some kind of deliberate power move on his part, keeping anyone who met with him in there uncomfortable. Which makes even more sense given the above information; most of the people he'd be meeting with in there would be other Atlesians, many of whom wouldn't be used to anything cooler than perfect room temperature.

The tumblr thing is dumb.

But, I think Rhodes is a far more complicated topic than SV is comfortable with, honestly. He's obviously a big part of the overall failure of Remnant and Atlesian society that lead Cinder down the path to villainy, but I also see a lot of really unreasonable expectations for what Rhodes should have done. Rhode's failure is that he is far more empathetic than most of the people we see from Atlas, but he's not heroic enough to cash that check. But make no mistake, you'd have to be John Brown levels of out there to kidnap a 10 year old to free her from bondage, raise her yourself, and spend the rest of your life on the run from authorities. That's a level of sacrifice that's a little hard to expect of people.

So yeah, it's fair to say that Rhodes wasn't up to the task of saving Cinder. But honestly, who the hell is when you really consider it? Oddly enough, I find there are more people in this world willing to die to protect someone or something than there are people willing to become a criminal and live the rest of their lives being hunted.

Now that shit at the very end, though? Where Rhodes decides he's going to take Cinder in for murdering the madam and the sisters? Fuck that guy. That's clearly the toxic influence of Atlas right there.

And now thousands are set to die in a desert, natch.

I mean isn't that way would happen in IRL. If an officer see someone who killed three people. You can argue it was self defense with the Step Mother.

But if anyone walked in they would see an unhinged killer.

I guess the difference is that Rhodes should have understood why she did it, and sympathized with her, rather than attack her so he could bring her in.

Or he could, you know, just let her fucking go. I think it's pretty weird that you can't seem to conceptualize this possibility.
I mean I doubt he can pardon her. Also just cause he let her go doesn't mean the rest of the kingdom would let her go.

I also find it pretty weird that you think that their isn't a world outside of Cinder and Rhodes situation.

How news going out that a mother and two daughters where killed in Atlas in a high end hotel and nothing would come from it. That seems to me absurd.

Who else in the Kingdom knew what Cinder had done? Who could have figured it out if Rhodes didn't tell them? Who could have caught Cinder before she fled the jurisdiction, if she had a head start?

That said, it's RWBY, there had to be a fight, and once it started it could only go one way. Rhodes was never going to be a recurring character.

Good Lord. You're one of those people that thinks Team RWBY are actually the villains for stealing an airship and not following every order from Ironwood, aren't you?

I'm not saying things would have been hunky dory if Rhodes had let Cinder go. I'm saying it could only be somewhere between the same and better than how it turned out as is. Getting away is kind of a given, considering she gets away after killing Rhodes anyway. But maybe not being betrayed by her mentor is enough to keep her from going complete sociopath.

So their is no way to investigate any sort of crime in Remnant. It's a case of if no one saw what happened their is nothing to search for. Don't detectives and criminal investigation exist with Huntsmen being memebers.

No?

The only issue I had was you saying not letting someone go after killing three people is a toxic Atlas influence.

That whole situation was just a mess. Killing the madame? It was understandable. But killing the little girls too? Those kids were serious dicks to Cinder, that doesn't mean I wanted them dead for it.

I don't think just letting Cinder walk away from that mess was going to end well. She was unstable enough to kill two kids that were mean to her.

The only clean way for it to have ended was for that whole mess to have never been allowed to happen in the first place.

Okay, but even if it was self defense, he still had to arrest her. That's not the toxic influence of Atlas, that's just doing your job.

What is a toxic influence is the "time of peace" mentality. He might have been able to put a stop to the Madam's clearly illegal stuff, but that would have clearly disrupted the status quo and would be too uncomfortable to confront. He was conditioned to accept this because to otherwise change it would be to air the dirty laundry and cause fear and panic.

I find the whole "They were just kids" thing pretty weird given, you know, Cinder was also a kid. But you know she's a victim of years worth of slavery and literal torture lashing out while they're... Well, spoiled brats who relish in seeing their slave be tortured for fun.
