RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

I mean the story has brought the entire population of one of the most racist Kingdom's of Remnant (emphasized a lot in Volume 7 and 8) to the least racist Kingdom as refugees, which has also suffered greatly as a colony of the other Kingdoms and still retains a lot of bitterness from that history. I'm not sure exactly how much focus there will be on Faunus prejudice in the Vacuo arc but it certainly won't be apolitical or pro-status quo.
I never said anything about apolitical. Apolitical fiction doesn't exist. I just sincerely doubt that faunus racism is going to be a forefront feature of the rest of the show. If the whole of RWBY were divided into a three act structure, we seem to be at the point at the end of the second act where the heroes hit their lowest points. Maybe V9 hops around between RWBY+J and Vacuo, but even then, it's probably going to be a lot more interpersonal than V6-8 - so a stronger character focus. Afterward I'm betting it starts ramping up to the series' climax, which necessitates heavy focus on the plot. I could, of course, be totally wrong, but my feeling is that a lot of the more mundane aspects of Remnant are going to be taking a backseat for the rest of the show. And not in a "argle bargle, CRWBY forgot this exists" bull shit way, but in a "okay, it's time to focus" way. They way the show is headed right now, I'm guessing it finishes with Volume 11, maaaaaybe Volume 12.

Potentially? Problem is where the hell are they gonna fit it? Between resolving most of it in Mistral and doing a suspiciously similar subplot with Mantle, the Faunus issue pretty much rode itself out. The show explored the avenues and it seems more focused on either fleshing out the main group or the plot itself.

Unless we either undo the peace Faunus got with Mistral, reveal that there are tensions in Vacuo, or have Tyrian carry the racism subplot, it's practically done.
I mean they're probably going to go back to Vale at some point, and having people who have actually seen the extremes and learned about some of the issues realizing that the place that was pretty quiet on that front wasn't as fair as they assumed because they didn't have signs about it everywhere might be a thing for a side plot to remind them that there are more things to deal with after they take care of Salem, so people can be assured that the heroes will have plenty of other adventures dealing with things into the future, possibly related to however the gods end up being like by the end.

I'm pretty sure they have plans for a few more years than that, and there are structures for acts that include more than three, so there could be more time for things. Maybe it'll even be discussed more in one of the books or comics instead of the main show if the show is going to be focusing more on the main plot.

I personally think Weiss could have used more development on that score; even people who aren't outright malevolent can be downright clueless about injustice unless they're directly confronted with it. That's just me.

The problem is, unless it's dealt with in one episode or less, then it will rapidly become "Team RWBY and their racist" . As in, how can you have any other plot thread with Weiss, as long as she's a racist? Oh look, tram RWBY is investigating Grimm...with their racist."" Food fight! With the racist." And the question will be, why is the show devoting time to someone who's a racist? Are they saying it's fine to spend time with and have fun with a racist? That racists are heroic?

There's a damn good reason that shows that do episodes with racist characters generally use guest actors, and that's because if you have a character that's racist against another character, especially a cool, sympathetic cast member, you're at strong risk of tainting their entire image. I know, I know, you're trying for a Dr. Pulaski vibe, but there's a reason she's one if the most disliked characters in Star Trek.

I mean really, the questions are "How much do we want people to loath Weiss", and "How much fun student adventure do we want to feature a racist?"

What? No he didn't. He's reactions to all of V8, he posted the V9 teaser, and a reaction to the V9 teaser.

Huh, i wonder why that was, then....I remember someone posting a video (no, not unicorn of war) about how he wasn't going to watch the show anymore. Time to go spelunking, I guess. Youtube history, don't fail me now. (it failed me) (oh, looking at his videos, god no it wasn't murder of birds, sorry for the mix up!) (i'm gonna claim it was hero hei, even tho I can't find the video I'm remembering. oh well.)

*Laughs in bitter knowledge of the future*

I'm sure that second part won't be important soon. As a side note, I love their character observations.

TRAUMA! MORE TRAUMA! Also more bitter future knowledge laughing.

Yyyeah, no, I really think that's reaching to ascribe positive intentions to him where there weren't, especially that bit about him willingly giving his life to 'give her experience'. Rhodes saw a little girl suffering in an abusive home, and did nothing but teach her Violence 101, instead of getting her out of it. His help was half-assed, and got him, the madame, and two little girls killed.

Honestly, given Cinder planned to kill her slavers when Rhode's met her all his training really did was delay the inevitable a few more years before circumstances led Cinder to snapping entirely. Though in that context I am unsure he can be blamed for their deaths, but otherwise agreed.

Setting that aside, even if we assume that Cinder was for sale and we accept the rest of the post was his thought process that still makes him a fucking moron not communicating it with Cinder or being able to think a way out of the deaths.

Good lord, this Tumblr post. The rest of this person's tumblr follows a similar format, btw.

From the Tumblr
Why did Rhodes leave Cinder alone? I believe Rhodes wanted to legally purchase Cinder's freedom so that Cinder wouldn't have to live as a runaway slave. That was why Rhodes was out on missions earning the money needed to free Cinder once and for all.
Or, you know, that is literally his job. That is the level of a child wanting some candy from 7-11 and thinking their dad going to work the next day is because he is trying to earn the money to buy it for them.

Why did Rhodes train Cinder instead of taking Cinder away directly? Because Rhodes wanted Cinder to have the skills she needed to make a living. The only skills Rhodes could give Cinder was his Huntsman skills so that Cinder could earn a living once she was free.

Taking Cinder with him would provide the skills and experience necessary to make a living much faster and more effectively as he can teach her 24/7 rather than once a week. Also, being a slave doesn't really provide much life skills beyond getting electrocuted.

Why did Rhodes fight Cinder at the end? Two reasons, I think. One: Rhodes knew that if Cinder turned herself in, she had a better chance at some semblance of a normal life if she claimed self-defense or provocation before a Jury. Otherwise, Cinder would forever be a fugitive, and Rhodes knows firsthand what that's like since he is a Huntsman.

This one makes even less sense that the other two. No one is stupid enough to believe that Cinder killed the Madam and two kids out of self-defense. Unless they mean that Rhodes killed those three and was killed by Cinder in return as a defense. Even then, it wouldn't hold up in the face of a competent prosecutor.

Second? Perhaps Rhodes knew that the die is cast, and if Cinder was to live as a fugitive, she had better be able to protect herself. Therefore, Rhodes gave his life to give Cinder the experience she needed to survive in Remnant.

Taking and training her physical and emotionally away from the Kingdom would be astronomically more effective than forcing her to kill the one person who she cared about and her going on her own.
