RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Is anything Ironwood has done this volume really that far removed from how the last volume ended?
There's a difference between:

"I'm driven to my wit's end by all this deception and betrayal, the very threat that would destroy the world is at my fucking doorstep, and now the person I wanted to talk me out of this just said I was exactly like this threat I swore to try and destroy."

and

"Oh, hey, people in Mantle are being rescued and thus the entire reason why people were against me is now finished. GUESS I'M GOING TO SHOOT THEM DOWN AND NUKE THE TOWN MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

And now for something completely different:

How do people in this thread think Oscar looks to Ren now? Can Ren perceive Ozpin's feelings?

The fact you think he had any right to be upset that RWBY & co didn't trust him when he was running a police state, not protecting Mantle while leaving it with giant holes in its walls that Grimm were tearing through pretty much tells me you're just ignoring what's on screen.

Also Ironwood has always, always, used the hammer in favor of any other tool,; its just that this time the people he's targeting aren't the White Fang or a small scrappy group of heroes, the violence inherent to it is the same however.

Not sure I understand the question, sorry.

Well, the fascist dictactor being a fascist dictator is just too cartoonish for you. God, I wanna live in your world for like, five minutes.
Before, it was understandable facist dictator, the typical "shooting and never asking questions" or "well, I'm going to use my authority to fuck over people". This is literally "MUWAHAHAHA, I HAVE A NUKE THAT I'M GOING TO USE ON THIS TOWN! STOP ME IF YOU CAN, RWBYMAN!"

Stop peddling obfuscatory lies. James isn't threatening Mantle for no reason, he feels he needs leverage over RWBY and friends, has lost the leverage he had in Qrow and Robyn on the one hand and JOLY on the other, and been gifted with the windfall of a powerful bomb (never mind how it was supposed to destroy Monstra and leave Atlas unharmed when it can apparently level Mantle or indeed how it's supposed to leave Atlas unharmed while leveling Mantle - maybe it's a shapable charge with a variable yield) that he feels is his only remaining leverage.

I am still so amused that

Cinder has a profile pic for Neo. Because she struck me as the person to just leave contacts at the letter stage. But no she went to the effort to get a pic of Neo for some reason.

He also doesn't get that at this point that

At this point, Ironwood isn't thinking clearly. He's doubling down on his evacuate to space plan because to do otherwise would be to admit that he's achieved nothing but burn his own kingdom down.
No, that would be an acceptable line of thinking because then it'd be canon that he's literally insane.

Anyway enough people have pointed out the obvious so I'ma jump onto something else.

This was noted by a few tumblrs, but it really is amusing that Watts, despite being a not much of a fighter, the cocky, classy tech guy is not your typical coward when pressed by someone stronger than him.

Like, Ironwood dangles him off a ledge, he laughs in the mans face and mocks his ideology.
Ironwood has him tortured to force compliance, he casually turns it against Ironwood & texts for a pick up.
Cinder loses her temper with him and outlines how she's going to kill him, and he laughs in her face, mocks her plan and then derides both past failures & ideology.

He's obviously still shocked and relieved when he's spared, which is realistic and humanizing, but I certainly appreciate that he's got enough back bone to snipe back. I think one of the tumblrs noted that he understands an appeal to force doesn't mean you've won the argument and capitalizes on that.

I mean he's also very mentally distressed considering the lack of sleep and the recent loss of arm.
Yeah that's one big thing we need to remember about this volume. It's been what, 24 hours or so since episode one and everybody has been running at full tilt for the entire time.

Nobody is running at 100% anymore and I have no doubt Ironwood's been burning the candle at both ends long before this.

When he saw the chess piece, he was half out of his mind on painkillers because he'd just flayed the skin off his arm, and promptly got terrified out of his mind because he though Salem was coming for his magic island. Since then, he's taken reckless actions by the dozen, and this ep... watch his body language, right from the beginning. in his quest to preotect Atlas, he's broken it, and himself.
