RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

I think it's a relevant detail that there is legal slavery for faunus, which Cinder is not. She's a young white girl in the Jim Crow South. Again, in-group/out-group shit. It's also fairly clear to me (you may disagree, but whatever I'm not actually that interested in this disagreement. Just laying out how I see it.) that Rhodes would have been advocating for her in this hypothetical given his behavior during the fight.
Well, partially. She's not Faunus, but she's not Atlesian, either, being Mistrali. I don't know what kind of difference that might make.

So we've finally got Cinder's backstory and I can't find the effort to care. I don't hate what it is but I expected something other than cinderella's backstory but without the happy ending. If this had details set up in by previous seasons, something original, and/or cinder was more interesting. Right now, it's just another log on the atlas sucks fire

So, call me crazy, but I suspect torturing a child with a shock collar is illegal in Atlas. Rhodes could have reported that. But that would likely get his favourite hotel shut down...

On another topic, FUCKS SAKE Elm. "How do we know we can trust Watts?" YOU CAN'T. AT ALL. YOU DUMB FUCKS. And then there's Harriet calling Jaune selfish. The people that were seemingly in danger at the time were the ones your boss specifically abandoned to death by elements and grimm!

Oh, and then Salem's Grimm arrives on Atlas. Yeah, really not the time to be bickering about Mantle.

Yes, if only the miltary had done its job and defended Mantle, the Grimm river might have been unable to get close and attack the lightly defended underside of the oh-so-important flying island. Instead, Atlas technology fails to live up to expectations. Again. They really have an unjustified overconfidence in their tech.

How can one even destroy the river let alone see it? Because it's implied that it's pretty far from Mantle's border.

JYR got to see the river by accident by getting what can't be more than a few hours out of Mantle, and is probably a lot less since they come across it in the aftermath of an action-packed chase scene. And Atlas has a massive air fleet. So, neither was that fleet scanning the ground for threats to the city, but neither did Ironwood maintain any kind of groundside picket. Again failing to scout.

How to destroy it is another matter. We've never actually seen anything destroy dark water, not even silver eyes or the same power used by the God of Light.

They'd also be too busy helping people to do something too. So...

If Atlas had done their jobs, Mantle would have heating and limited Grimm at best. There would have been people to spare for outside the city. Helping people is the better option, but as always, Atlas only worried about themselves, leaving themselves open to this attack.

How would just seeing the River fix anything though? How would restoring heat to Mantle fix anything though? Salem was still on her way and she's been shown to change plans on the fly, even last minute if she wants to.

If you see it at a distance, it gives time to try countermeasures to block it and stop it from reaching mantle. As for heating, it means you don't have to worry as much about civilians, you can set up more defenses in the city... Or, you can huddle behind a forcefield, not send anyone out, and get caught with your pants around your ankles, as Ironwood has done.

Psyga, plain and simple, if Ironwood had stuck to the plan they had after the dinner party the Kingdom would of been in a better spot.
Watts was captured.
Tyrian was being brought in.
Grimm clearing and evacuation was going smoothly.
With enemies inside as indicated by the chess piece that triggered him, he could of had RWBY, JN_R, and the 4 Aces sweep the area alongside the troops currently around. This would of helped catch Neo and protect The Lamp. This would of meant more back up sooner for Winter and Penny to deal with Cinder. Instead he chose to shout at RWBY and cause an unneeded conflict.
If Ironwood had worked with his allies instead of turning on them the people would of been safe on Atlas and they would of been more ready to move by the time Salem arrived.
He'd have all his Aces alive and ready. He'd have more hands on deck to help defend. He'd have the god damn Winter Maiden on his side. And Salem would have nothing.

It really wouldn't. Remember, Ironwood's plan for Friya was to have Winter kill her for her power (which is. . . a step down from the old plan of waiting for her to die and only allowing her contact with Winter, relying on her dementia to not allow anyone she had seen less recently to have a place in her last thoughts), and he knew RWBY and ORNJ couldn't be trusted to countenance that. He only thought Penny could because he sees her as a machine without personal feelings.

Actually, if he reacted to Cinder being in Atlas with a shred of intelligence instead of panic? He would have realized sending Winter to Fria was a terrible idea that would be like sending a flare up. But he could set up an ambush for Cinder...

Exactly.
like this
Ironwood - "I sent Winter to retrieve the Winter Maiden powers."
Ruby - *realizes what the piece is made of* "That's glass....oh shit Cinder!"
Ironwood - "The Fall Maiden?! Damn it. Alright I need someone to go and back up Winter and Penny. Get them and the Winter Maiden out of there and away from Cinder! We can't allow another Maiden to fall into Salem's control."

See? There ya go.

Or for that matter, if he didn't decide to react to the chess piece with 'whelp, time to murder an elderly woman for her car keys'

But sending backup is exactly what he can't do, because "retrieve the winter maiden powers" means "murder Friya," and it's only the pressure of the situation that kept RWBY from realizing that. He can't allow them near Winter, otherwise they'd try to stop her as much or more than they tried to stop Cinder.

One might think he could change his plan to not include murdering Friya, but Ironwood is as incapable of changing plans as Qrow is of not bringing misfortune to those around him, and for exactly the same reason. It's also not within his character. Winter, being young, fit, and loyal, is in his mind a safer custodian of the winter maiden powers than Friya under any circumstance.

But then we wouldn't conflict for this season, ya know instead of showing how Final Boss Salem is.

Which is why I said "Get them and the Winter Maiden out of there."

And are we really just going to blame every bad thing Ironwood does on his semblance? It isn't like he is incapable of changing plans, as him changing plans is what got everyone is this shit to begin with.

Anyone else notice how the shot of Ironwood watching the live feed of the Alpha Centinels taking out the shield is very similar to the shot from the opening where all the chess pieces on Ironwood's side disintegrate? He even has the same shocked expression there
