RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

I'm desperately looking for any net value or good that could come from this jab and seeing none.
Perhaps I should have written Team RWBY instead of just Rwby. That would have made it more clear. But no, it was aimed at the characters of the show. Oz is alienating his allies because he doesn't trust in them and because he doesn't trust them they are "betraying" him, AKA not trusting him in turn and he perceives that as betrayal.

Hey, remember when Blake slapped Sun across the face because she was being emotional and not caring what perfectly good reasons he had for doing what he was doing?

Is she a villain?
Oz is a grown-ass man that supposedly has had centuries to come to terms with his problems. Blake is a moody teenager who just escaped from watching her life destroyed in front of her eyes and is trying to cope.

And even then Blake's slap was widely seen as controversial.

I thought the people claiming ozpin is a villain were stupid up until this point, where I've gotta eat crow because they were right all along and hazel's backstory is retroactively justified
I get that feel bro. I have repeatedly gone on record stating that I suspect that Oz will take over entirely, not that they will merge with Oscar being in charge. Recent developments have thrown that into question. Still not completely throwing it out yet but chances are I'm going to be wrong.
Regarding Ozpin
He REALLY didn't want people spending such a vital resource just to learn his most embarrassing secrets.
He has no one but himself to blame. Literally 30 seconds earlier he was caught outright lying to the team. Not withholding information, not giving half-truths, flat out lying. His statement about the questions being used up was patently false. So why the actual fuck would anyone bother to trust him after he said no more half-truths and lies? "The question was useless? Maybe. Maybe not. They wouldn't have had to use a question on what he was hiding if he wasn't hiding anything in the first place. And what's to say that this question is useless? By viewing Salem's back story they might figure out a way to defeat her? It's been made clear time and again even before this reveal that she has personal beef with Oz and screwing over humanity is just a byproduct. And even if Oz did come right out and tell them that he was responsible for Salem, who's to say he is telling the whole truth and it isn't just very biased, and would be useless?

Comparing the actions of a traumatized victim of abuse to a thousand year old wizard who fought to take over someone else's body just to hide information he lied to the cast about then charged Ruby because she wanted to find out what he was hiding, is gross and I won't say anything more on the matter.

i think what Ozpin is hiding is that he used to be the villian until he turned Salem inyo something even worse than him, then regret caused him to go into exileas an old hermit in the woods. He's a living lesson in people changing but from the other side of the coin.

So...
Who thinks Grimm!Salem is more attractive than human!Salem? Like no joke Salem's human design is like the most generic-ass boring blonde girl ever.

No, but she was a bitch.

I agree with you in that
Ozpin isn't a villain, but the problem is that, like @thesevenwielder said, dude brought this all on himself.

The whole "wasting a question" thing was kinda necessary because even if Ozpin was fully intent on telling people, the dude had lied on such a life-threatening scale and has basically broken his word about three times (the Relic being a lure, Paimon being in the lamp, and possibly Paimon having two more wishes), only justifying it with either "you didn't ask" at best or "hey, people betray me all the time, so what's the point" at worst.

Though, you know what's gonna be worse? Remember all those "who's at fault" arguments that involve the counter-arguement of "blame Salem, the actual person who caused it"?

If Ozpin does have a direct hand in Salem's creation like the end had implied, then we can just counter the counter and say "Blame Ozpin".

I'm kinda hoping it doesn't come down to that, because even I know that's gonna fracture the fanbase.

Volumes 1-3: anti-upskirt tech
Volumes 4-5: bit more fanservice but outside Ruby's boob window and skirt riding high pretty tasteful.
Volume 6: GIANT NAKED BONDAGE WOMAN

At least Jinn seemed to lack certain bits...
...well i assume so...didnt actually look that closely...

Cross posting.
Cinder's back with less of a threatening aura than ever. Did she lose access to the maiden powers during her escape? I remember Salem said Cinder needed to dominate her Grimm arm back in V4, maybe since the powers are stored in the arm she can't access them from the mindset of a little bitch.

It would be funny if Lil Miss just fed Cinder to the Ironwood's agents or a pissed off Salem who wants the maiden powers stored safely in her dungeons.

YES go Oscar! Ozpin's successfully kept secrets officially have a lifespan now. Oh but damn, this is such a waste of a knowledge genie. Worth it for viewers to get a fully animated story instead of talking heads though. Plus the current wizard endorsed it, technically.

Wasn't expecting the kids to be so aggro against Ozpin, sure he's being sketch but da fuck do they expect to accomplish by picking a fight before they've found any food or shelter, with a little old lady to care for... I will not be terribly surprised if they come out of the vision surrounded by another group of Grimm.

Ozpin actually getting emotional and angry over the questions was a reassuringly human reaction. Pretty sure he's just a guy whose been burned too many times, not a genuinely evil person.

Hmm, Yang's looking awful guilty over that missing Spring maiden.

For doing nothing wrong, Qrow was rewarded with suspicion and more depression. Bad luck dude. I wonder if he's going to leave the party. Maybe the red eyes in the intro are him starting to see things from Raven's point of view. It could also be Raven is key to restoring Qrow's confidence in his path though. Taiyang might have flipped her back on the straight and narrow after all.

If Qrow leaves I am curious how much of a role Bad Luck has played in the group's adventures. Did Ozpin's secrets blow up in the most dramatic way possible because of the semblance tipping the scales against group unitY, with things like Oscar dropping the relic?

Oscar's still in the shot when they're trekking through snow in the trailer so they obviously don't ditch him over what they see, but I wonder if Ozpin is going to snap and ask the relic another personally relevant but long term useless question like "why did Lionheart/Raven/everyone betray me?".
Speaking of frazzled
1. Oscar didn't just drop the relic, he dropped his cane too!

Looks like he picked it back up in the opening shot of the trailer, but a new weapon would help further differentiate Oscar from Ozpin. I'm hoping the cane can transform or be modified into something with a blade.

2. Wanna bet Yang's short temper isn't going to vanish now that the acceptable target of Ozpin has been dealt with? Gimme dat drama with Blake already RT.

3. If she isn't an old friend of Ozpin's, Maria must think she's with a group of absolute nutters on the good juice.

Okay, this is cool.

Basically it's Ozpin's speech from the first Volume re-contextualized to fit the narrative of the story so far.

Good writing is when you plan a story in advanced and write tiny bits of foreshadowing. Excellent story telling is when you write by the seat of your pants, but in a way that makes people think you planned it all in advance.

Granted, we're not sure if this was all planned from day one or if this was changed last minute, but it's cool to see stuff foreshadowed from Volume 1 coming back.

Oscar and Ozpin have established themselves as different characters though so obviously the team ain't gonna ditch Oscar no matter what happens. The boy doesn't deserve to be left just because he's got ozpin in the back of his head, especially after he has shown them more trust then ozpin.

When you point to scenes that are so vaguely mysterious or utterly generic that they could be interpreted to mean anything and say, "SEE GUYS, I PLANNED IT ALL ALONG," that's lazy writing. If the video is meant to show past uses of foreshadowing, it's grasping at straws.

I do understand the reverse side to this, but the way I'm saying it, it's more "wait, did they plan that all along? If so, holy shit!" and I think it's excellent writing in the sense of "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

I would laugh so hard at the salt in the fandom if the old woman they are traveling with turns out to be a complete nobody and all the fans of the series are completely wrong. Can you imagine the outrage?

I'm half expecting it, personally.

Just because it'd be funny for Maria to be just the Miss Marple to the RWBY's Z Fighters.
