RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Oh hell yes, the soundtrack is starting STRONG this season.

It's great to have RWBY back together, I much prefer their banter to RNJR's.

Yeah this group fight is leagues better than the last season. They're actually coordinating, placement is consistent, and they pay attention and send help when when someone's in trouble. And freaking finally, the return of Ruby leading. The boss Grimm Chimera takedown was epic.

Not mentioning the Relic draws Grimm is such an oversight I'm wondering if the issue isn't Ozpin being a dick, but Oscar failing to process the information he knows. Oscar still seems to be using Ozpin-possession for exposition dumps, but we know he can access the memories by himself. He should have known about the Relic's properties before Ozpin possessed him to tell everyone.

And there was that bit where Oscar tells Ozpin he's going to take charge and then completely flubs it when Jaune asks what's going on, then defers to Qrow for instructions. Oscar is definitely acting like a follower right now.

My gawd, a plan that's actually good and explained beforehand. Would have worked better without the train being derailed in the last seconds, but A+ execution otherwise.

Nice detail of Weiss tacking everyone to the top of the train with glyphs.

Okay that old lady has to have Aura to be that calm after a train crash.

Not much more happened in the episode than what we already saw in the preview, so might as well focus on the OP.

Everyone's back together and things are happy and great and then Adam shows up in the window reflection.

That old lady totally has silver eyes.

Huh, Qrow's alcoholism may be in focus this season. Both he and Ruby struggle with Grimm arms pulling them down- perhaps they're struggling with depression this season?

Roman's hat is back near a hooded figure with a skeleton arm, Adam's back with the WF logo still, Cinder is not seen in Salem's usual line up, and... not-Glynda at Ozpin's statue? IIRC Glynda's VA split with RT, maybe they're recycling elements of the design.

Edit: wait a minute, that's not a statue of current Ozpin! It has the same crystal capped staff as the first Oz in the lineup, the brown haired one with armor (King of Vale?). This might be a flashback arc, or Oscar exploring the Oz memories.

We zoom past several characters onto Ozpin, who fades away to Oscar. I assume those were past Ozpins. Jaune is not happy with Oscar!

Qrow's killing stuff, cut to the same hooded figure- we can now clearly see she has a skeleton arm and is wielding Cinder's sword. Did Salem abandon Cinder in Mistral? Maybe she'll run into Neo and recruit her old asset on a revenge quest.

More train fight, Ruby and Weiss take centerstage in the main cast lineup. Old woman confirmed for main cast member.

-Chimera giving orders to the Manticores (is there an Alpha version of the Chimera, with a mane?)
-Blake choking a Manticore with her ribbon so Yang can oneshot it
-Ruby's "Thank me later!" assist of Weiss
-Qrow abuses birb mode to sneak in hits
-Manticore cannonballs to destroy turret
-Yang messes with the horns and tosses the bull into an uppercut
-Ruby saves Oscar by comboing off Weiss to use another Manticore as a projectile
-Weiss skating on glyphs
-Yang shotgun punching the ribbon to tie up the Boss
-The Chimera's Lion head and Snake head turn to look at opposite wings when Weiss ices them
-Qrow+Ruby beyblade guillotine

BONUS
-Yang-Ruby mocking Dudley and Dee behind Qrow
-Yang and Ruby in mortal combat over a shopping bag
-Sun shadowboxes the air in an attempt to defeat Neptune's bad attitude
-Weiss demonstrating her infamous SALT technique

In previous seasons it you could watch it free on RT's site the day after, and then after a week it went to Youtube, but now that they're on their own site exclusively the unpaid account access is at the one week mark instead?

Essentially, until a week after the season ends there will be a permanant 1 week divide between First members and Free Members.

Opening Every Single Spoiler on a page Every TIme I Visit is such a pain...

Technically
we're at a 2/3 arrival rate, 1/3 unattacked rate. Oscar's was (as far as we know) fine, or at the very least it arrived. The Schnee train was attacked by White Fang, but if they weren't there in case of Grimm attacks, which would also be more likely to succeed between the loss of said mechs and the negative emotions of losing a fortune in Dust, as well I'll die of shock. Especially after we saw half of the latest one get derailed, despite having (admittedly incompetent, Mistral is short on free lancers remember) huntsmen and what I'm assuming are standard issue fortifications and defenses.

The train menus displaying when they're in the station also has the Vale line marked as out of service.

Not gonna post my full review but I thought it was very solid as a first episode, a couple of minor niggles or desires I would have liked to see met, but overall very strong and good.

So... Don't tell me if you have spoiler knowledge one way or the other, because I'm not a subscriber, but did that look like Roman Torchwick's hat to anyone else?

Maybe Mysterious Hooded Figure is Neo?

Mysterious hooded figure is more than likely Cinder, but Torchwick's bowler did go sailing on through, so maybe we get Best Midget back.

So with the fight on the train, when Weiss froze the wings, she was levitating on a Glyph, right?
but the train was still moving...
would this mean that she could totally ride around on one flying carpet style?
or was it anchored somehow to the train?

She has to skate on a line of glyphs to cross distances so probably no magic carpet.

Maybe they're anchored in place relative to her frame of reference?

I'm told I should be more positive.

LOOK AT HOW SHE LIFTS HER LEG UP WHEN SHE KISSES HIM! AND THE ROMANTIC MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND!

That adorable smile of hers as she looks up at Sun! Look at how no matter what he's always able to make her happy!

How bashful she is around her ray of sunshine!

And look at how sad she is that he has to leave!

SO SAD!

NEPTUNE THE WINGMAN

And Ilya? Girl with a huge crush on Blake? Even she gets it!

GOD

DAMN!

Blake, you go get those abs!

YEAH, THIS IS MY JAM!

You're reading way too much into that.

Actually, quick question about the trailer (that's non-spoiler, right?) that one shot where RWBY are all walking in the snow, and Yang is pushing Maz Katara on her bike? Why is she doing the heavy labor? So much fan speculation about her knowing something about Silver Eyes so Ruby should be pushing it. Or maybe Oscar because it probably relates to Oz somehow. Why not Qrow? Or if Yang does have to push it, why is she being left behind everyone except Oscar? Why aren't they surrounding her and Maz Katara, either for protection or to talk to her? Obviously she's just lounging so she has all the time in the world to talk.

It doesn't make much sense, is what I'm saying. Maybe Yang is physically the strongest, but that's no reason to just leave her to do all the physical labor. None of them are even looking back in consideration.

Decided I might as well share my full reaction to the new episode here:

OK, that was a really solid first episode, animation, sound and over all world building and design was top notch, kudos there. I adored the design of the Elder Manticore Grimm it freaked and creeped me out with its disturbingly long neck and comparatively smoothed head and the fact it took all of them together to take it out really shows what a threat it was, also great last minute spite.

It is sad the name of the White Fang was ruined by Adam, they were doing great until he screwed everything up (Please bring Sienna and the true White Fang back.) but the traitors got a fitting reward for supporting an unstable loser like Adam.

Anyway I enjoyed the general back and forth between the team, Ruby and Yang being best sisters was cute, the exposition was well delivered and Ilia was adorable. I do wish something had been done to address all the creepiness of Sun's invasive/stalkerish behavior (I do not want to discuss this, if you don't see it that way fine, but you won't change my mind) over him being thanked so much for it. Also wish that we had seen the Belladonna's (I want them to meet Yang, the girl who sacrificed her arm for their daughter :D)

But overall the farewells were well done, though wow, leaving Mistral right after it has lost a ton of Hunters seems like a bad call. Anyway great send off with Ilia and Blake, Neptune was amusing.

Things still being awkward between Blake and Yang works well, I wonder if Blake was projecting Yang's injury onto her current self or if it is just her trying to do nice things in general, leaning towards the latter based on Yang's line, nice gesture on her part even if it seems clear the two haven't actually 'talked' yet.

Also dang it Ozpin what the heck is wrong with you!? You promised to stop lying and keeping secrets then you pull this putting civilians lives in danger by not keeping the Relic isolated!

Also weird to see Ruby shouting at her team about it, she's taking a cue from Qrow it seems, shout down anyone who dares question Oz (Though wow, something even Qrow also wasn't keeping secret) Though I could see it as her prioritizing fighting the Grimm right now, which would fit her character.

Clever use of Jaune's Semblance with the train, though ugh I feel he got to upstage Ruby again when talking to that Hunter and thus not letting the scene be hers alone. But I liked the plan decisions and its overall effects, go Nora. (Oh and I forgot but that beach imagery was cute)

Mysterious lady is mysterious, given her more glaring nature earlier I feel she is hiding something I hope she is heroic though, RWBY could really use some less questionable mentor figures. Also interesting Ozpin is asking for permission now, though with Oscar's eyes shifting… Yeah I am still suspicious of him.

Cool theme song as well, huh Torchwick's hat, is it Cinder Neo, gosh I want it to be Sienna even if the that makes no sense then XD

I don't think those designs are actually spoilers, but just in case

Why is suburban dad Oz dressed so... contemporarily? That's a very modern design. The others are sort of fantasyesque and understandable, but that outfit? It's kind of an eyesore, actually. Actual dad Taiyang didn't dress that bad.

Here's a brainteaser: if Salem needs four Maidens then why did she only ever have one girl as her minion?

THANK THE GODS! I'm not the only one who noticed Papa being jarringly out of place.

It's sad Mercury wasn't in the trailer at all. Maybe he actually split off from the group? Said "fuck it" and left Emerald and Hazel to Salem's tender mercies, deciding that following a (seemingly) dead woman and her master who also creates Grimm just isn't worth it? Maybe in the future he will become RWBY's ally of convenience. Not a good guy by any means, but he doesn't want the world to end. Meanwhile Emerald keeps falling further and further into Salem's camp. That would be a neat subversion of Emerald's vague "it's almost... sad" comment in v3.

All just speculation, but I like the idea.

Talking about the animation, you know that moment in the trailer where RWBY are all standing on top the train and Ruby says "don't let anyone die?" Look at their hair. Despite being on-top a high-speed train, their hair is blowing to the side instead of behind them like it should be. A minor nitpick I know, but considering a not-insignificant amount of people were praising trees of all things because of the 'improved animation' we should also take into account the bad animation. Finally, why did we get a barely-hidden upskirt shot with Ruby? Yes it was an 'action pose' but it could have easily been shot in such a way that her skirt isn't literally framing her crotch.
