RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

When I saw the pic on SB I figured it was fan art, with the uncertain feeling of "what if it is real though" so it is real.

EDIT: which Persona dancing game? There are two coming up, one for Persona 5, and one for Persona 3.
Wait False Alarm(Possibly), yes even I got deceived which is infuriating at the moment since I usually pride myself about accuracy yeah it might have come from here
ruby rose (persona 4: dancing all night, persona dancing night, and rwby) drawn by roru (lol dessin) - Danbooru
Yeah......not cool.

Fuck yeah, an actual date! And hey looks like they're getting better at portraying Menagerie being crowded. Also I wonder if that black dude is a human living in or visiting Menagerie or if he's a subtle Faunus type like Tuckson and Illia.

On the whole, RWBY's animation quality is now pretty much at where it ought to have been at the beginning of volume 1.

It would have been kind of hard to do that when the company as a whole was smaller than the animation team is now.

I'm surprised they have the quality they do DESPITE their schedule. Roosterteeths production pipeline is insane. Remember, for most companies that produce shows like this, not only do they generally have a bigger team then RT but they work years on a single project. Like say, the current season of Voltron was probably being worked on two years or more before it came out. RT gets through stuff insanely fast by industry standards simply because they can not afford to do otherwise. It's not a luxury they have.

Roosterteeth are the masters of making more with less. Appreciate that. Understand that the animation mistakes you might find in the show not likely do to them being bad animators, but because they simply do not have the time or man power to polish it to industry standards. Miles lampshades this talking about people complaining about season 1 walk animations and such. It's not like they didn't know about it, they simply couldn't address it with the time and resources they had.

Oh I understand the reasons and I'm not denying that Rooster Teeth gets a lot done with very little. That doesn't change that their reach has frequently exceeded their grasp im a way that would be fatal for other studios, only to be saved by their own established fandom.

And what exactly are you basing that claim on exactly? There are a lot of big budget animations and cartoons that look like shit yet still remains popular. I would wager that RWBY taking off had a lot more to do with it having stuff like this
rather than the idea that people were paying for merchandise and membership fees for a free show that they didn't like.

The business model of airing the show for free on the internet where anyone can watch it at any time probably also helped make it so popular. Its a lot easier to get into a show if you don't have to look for specific timeslots or pay for specific services just to watch it and it especially helps that its available in all regions everywhere at the same time instead of the usual "oh sorry but even though you paid us money to watch our show you can't watch it after all because you don't live in the right country, sucks to be you!" bullshit.

Edit:
Remembered something else that's relevant to this. A large part of RWBY's success is how insanely popular it ended up being in Japan, seriously its getting massive promotional posters over there, is being aired in cinemas, has a dub with high profile voice actors and actresses, has a manga adaptation, a light novel adaptation, manga/light novel anthologies, is being included in a Blazblue fighting game, has ALL THE TOYS, etc. And none of that stuff is likely to be because of Rooster Teeth having an established fanbase in Japan. Take these quotes from a discussion about whether or not Rooster Teeth could get Red vs Blue to get a Japanese translation:
Marquis SB said:
RvB would never work in Japan. They tried it once with a Halo 4 promotional commercial that was dubbed into Japanese and the notes they got back regarding Grif was "is something mentally wrong with him?" The lazy fuckwad humor that is Grif does not translate well in Japan.

RWBY was a success because action is more universal.
Silentstorm said:
It also doesn't help that their designs are just guys and women in armor, we don't see anyone's face but Carolina's at any point, something that they use for jokes, like Sarge commenting on his iconic eyebrows in a recent episode.

Contrast that to popular designs in Japan, where characters rarely if ever wear that much armor, much less helmets, in fact, you tend to see very expressive faces with characters, so the fully armored look of the RvB characters really does not help either.

And before anyone says anything, yes, Tokusatsu is popular in Japan, but those series are live-action, and since the 2000's, the main characters have been turning into anime characters more and more with unique traits for their looks out of costume, look at Gentaro, the main character of Kamen Rider Fourze:

Which has a distinctive hair style in series and is pretty much a shounen hero that is always optimistic, always forgiving and tries to befriend everyone even the villains, which he does, he even yells "UCHUUUU KITAAA" when he transforms.

Look at the newest Super Sentai, Kyuranger, where there are rangers that are actual furries and robots:

In a world where even live-action series where people who fight with armors have the heroes becoming more visually distinguishing at any time really shows that RvB's designs are not the kind of thing that Japan likes.

Its extremely unlikely that Rooster Teeth had an established following in Japan before they made RWBY, which means the show became popular over there on its own merits.

So I am not sure if this is new news or not, but Blake is way shorter than she appears, like she is actually shorter than Kali, only a little taller than Ruby who is barely taller than Weiss, while Yang has like nearly a full foot on even Blake who is second tallest.

Someone did some number crunching on the height charts, calculated how much impact the heels have (Yang doesn't really have heels, so they could only maybe take of 2 cm at most) and found that, yeah Blake is way shorter than Yang.

Here's the link to one of the posts on the subject, there are several from this person, some of which have shippy content which I find cute but know not everyone will care for, but this one has little and also covers the height differences with the rest of RWBY.

Summary though:
Ruby is just over 5 ft tall
Weiss is almost 4 ft 11.
Blake is around 5.3
Yang is around 5′8

Shoe calcs:

Sorry I just find this interesting.

The fact that Weiss is actually shorter than Ruby never ceases to amuse me.

Blake seems taller than she really is due to both her high heels (something Weiss shares) and her bow (unless cat ears count for height).

Also, the difference between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 8 inches is 5 inches, or a bit less than half a foot, not a full foot. ;)

Though in truth adjusted RWBY height charts have been a thing ever since Monty first released the character models and provided an accurate scale (the unadjusted height chart). For example:

Not sure if anyone has determined whether the characters have grown since Volume 1, with the new character models.

I think Blake might even be slightly taller than 5 feet 3 inches (perhaps 5 feet 3.75 inches, as the reddit comment suggests) because the heel adjustment on the left in the quoted shoe calc image seems a bit too aggressive, but I'm not a shoe expert.

Funnily enough, these adjusted heights seem to match up well with this Volume 1 image where Team RWBY stands side by side in their school uniforms:

Indeed, I desperately want a bare foot scene for that and so Yang can tower over her tiny team XD

Fair point on the inches, I may have been overly generous.

Also great reference point with the pic!

Found another neat post on the subject as well:

yes hello as promised, have an updated height chart for your viewing pleasure

fixed heights:
weiss: 4′11″
ruby: ~5′1″
blake: ~5′2″
yang: 5′7″

*note: blake & ruby are rounded up from half-inches, blake's height was adjusted for v1 heel size, & yang's height was also adjusted to account for her boots this time.

you're welcome my friends now suffer with me

Confirmation that the first episode will be available in theaters via Fathom.
