RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

That wasn't breach bad, but that's certainly not what I expected.

I thought it was going to have like a bone lance or something and when it grew the shards it'd be shooting them or make a sword out of it and in general be less of a schmuck.

i mean, I still love rwby, but I keep being disappointed at almost every turn. They have great ideas and just drop them like a hawk does a turtle.

I don't know... Maybe I just have low standards, but I do like RWBY and I did enjoy volume 4 (even though it had some flaws).

Maybe RWBY isn't living up to its potential, but I still think that it's a good show.

Apparently Yang and Ruby did talk about Ruby running off before she left.
I think only the Yangalysis guy on Tumblr really believed that Ruby didn't talk with Yang off-screen before leaving home.

Yang cliffhanger, since we still don't know which way she went.
Her bike was facing the way to Mistral, and she didn't turn. Also, I don't think she would have sounded as amused or confident in threatening Raven with trouble the way she did Ruby.

Credits song is a pun! It's a Yang song (I think it implies she's going after her mother, but hey, opinions may differ and I want the full lyrics before committing) and it's "Armed and Ready." *facepalm*
Even better: One of the lines of the song is "You'll say, 'Goddammit!'"

Also "I'll bring you punishment."

RWBY's storytelling has never been particularly surprising. It's always been direct and straightforward, with the surprises coming in terms of specifics rather than in terms of generalities. This has, in fact, always been one of my pet peeves about the fandom: they expect things that aren't there, were never promised, aren't implied by the story, get annoyed when those things are absent, and get confused when things that are terminally obvious are waved in front of them. They complain about everything when they aren't in full hugbox mode, and many places are toxic and awful. And that's not even getting into the shipping.
Yeah, I made the dubious choice of calling the toxic fans out on their attitude.

Affectionate Criticism versus Disdainful Criticism

RWBY is not terrible, and it is not great; so too, the FNDM

RWBY FNDM rwdeness

Miles and Kerry, and taking criticism?

Why should Rooster Teeth obey you?

I'd rather Rooster Teeth try for too much than for too little

Rooster Teeth was over-extended, not lazy

Appreciation for World of Remnant episodes

Miles and Kerry are not responsible for Jaune

Though they seem to think I'm blind to RWBY's flaws, myself.

RWBY's biggest problem as a show

I want the Grimm to seem like more of a threat

I didn't find the Nuckelavee Grimm intimidating enough

Rooster Teeth seems to be misusing Sun for creating tension

Jaune and "shounen-levels of talent"

Why is Jaune a main character? / Answering a response

Are Team JNPR really main characters? / JNPR aren't necessary

RWBY is not exactly bad, it just lacks enough good stuff to take it to the "Good" tier.

I still love that fight scenes actually use weapon knockback as a resource.

Honestly V3 in my mind was amazing and great, V4 has been... I have a hard time feeling much for it at all to be honest, the Ren & Nora stuff was more or less on point when it came to their backgrounds and Weiss's story worked but otherwise... Yeah.

In other thoughts:

So I have a question.

When asked about whether he was planning to go after Ruby, Tai looks towards Yang's window and says he has things to take care of, she looks guilty, slaps on the arm and training begins.

Now Yang has gone after Ruby and Tai is still at home.

Thoughts?

I was curious about that to but as Ruby points out in her letter with Beacon down the teachers at Signal become more vital than ever since that seems like the most likely substitute for Beacon until they can reclaim and rebuild it. Taiyang might have decided that Yang is in good enough shape to go after and protect Ruby without him, especially if he knows that Qrow is watching over RNJR. He might also want to help deal with the situation at Beacon, until that is fixed the world is in serious danger, especially if Vale's Relic is not Ozpin's cane as some have speculated and is still at Beacon.

I think this is the key. If Yang hadn't gone after Ruby, then I think Tai would have been on the boat with her and taken the other fork. But since Yang was going, Tai didn't think he needed to personally intervene, especially if he's at all aware of what Qrow is doing. (It actually rather reflects the way in which Yang has played the "mom" role to Ruby in their family.)

That definitely seems possible, still it feels weird he'd cite Yang as a reason to stay, then once she's up and moving just hang back. I mean, if nothing else an explanation would be nice I feel. Plus, I mean, these are still his kids we're talking about, one of whom was literally having PTSD flashbacks not long ago, and he seems to have been mostly hanging around the house recently so I would assume other teachers can fill in for him.

Yeah she does, to the point that Ruby chooses Yang over Taiyang for reassurance and advice every time except for when Taiyang accompanied her to Summer's grave.

Edit: Wrote epilogue letter to Yang not Taiyang, Yang called Ruby's plan reckless implying that the two talked about it while Taiyang found out by Ruby's first letter. Even at the end of Volume 3, went to Yang over Taiyang for information as well as asking what they would do next.

If you want to be persnickety you could argue Ruby being alright with Taiyang being at Signal while asking Yang to come even while saying that Yang has responsibilities to herself to heal first is another choice but personally I think that's flimsy.

You know, I want to see a semi-crack fanfic about Amber and Pyrah hanging out in Cinder's head with a running vein of black comedy throughout. I love the thought that they're just having a roommate sitcom and ruining Cinder's attempts to look cool.

This season helped me grasp why I'm enjoying RWBY even though I don't disagree with the criticisms many people make: because every season has improved on the previous one, and when I look back to the five minute clipisodes of Vol 1 and then watch the fight between Qrow and Tyrian I'm fucking blown away at how far the show has come in quality and depth, and I get excited imagining where they'll be four volumes from now.
