RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

-Sigh-
All the stupidity you mentioned would actually be more palatable if it had been intended to be a parody from the start.

Look, I'm as much of a perv as the next trans woman with a love of catgirls and green-skinned space babes, but heat cycles for sapients belong firmly in the kink fics area, not a work you're proclaiming as 'fixing' the source material.

Doesn't change the fact she is dressed in sex stereotype version of Romani or Ainu instead of looking like a rough thug that the tribe actually was.

Actual Vernal

fanart of "Fixing RWBY" Vernal

That's fanart too. Where is that concept art that got Celtic roundly mocked the last time this came up in thread, or should we not link that here?

That said, that fanart, while looking NOTHING like Vernal from the show, does look better than the concept art.

Also, I realize the Volume 9 trailer has the same energies as another video game trailer:

So let me get this straight. I'm somewhere that's NOT what I would call Remnant... I'm seeing freaking chesire cats, and... oh yeah I'm talking to a MOUSE. Yeah, okay, that is something that I do now. I do magic, kill jacked-up beasts, I'll probably fly next.
- Ruby Rose, RWBY: Forspoken Volume 9

*shrugs*
All I know is that FixVernal does not read as "Ainu" to me.

I think it's the fact that Ainu hasn't really gotten many examples of 'fanservicey outfits' in widespread media. Hell, a lot of peoples main familiarity with it right now would be Pokemon Legends, and while that has some WEIRD variations, it doesn't have much in the way of skimpy fan service. While Romani and similar cultures have suffered skimpy fanservice outfits in common media for far far too long.

I TRIED TO FORGET THAT FACT, Thank you.
not to mention Cardin, of all people, tried to give Blake a pep talk on the train to get her to talk feelings with Yang.
and that Cardin had like a rabbit keychain or something because he actually has love for Velvet. >.>"
One crack ships happen

And honestly I kind of forgot about any mention of heat cycles.

Sorry but at least that vernal has personality and quasi matches. Raven's aesthetic.

Taking inspiration from real life, people's

happens.

How and what you do with it is what matters. as far as I remember they weren't that problematic. So many cultures get wash down the drain with whiteness that only the small minority and counterculture are what stands out to most people. so they take those as inspiration. And that's what I feel happened here.

Or a thing where they don't think about sex outside of a seasonal thing that they still control themselves in, and argue that not having that turn off is a weird distraction for a species to have.

Thought that was hippie Raven from the flowers in her hair.
At least it's not also ABO?
I don't know what that is off the top of my head and I don't think I want to find out given the context.

This is a fic that rewrites the creepy guy that 'flirts' with Yang at a gas station, into Ravens new husband, do you really think they applied that much thought? :p

You really don't. It'll make you even more hilariously amused at some of those right-wing nuts that advertise themselves as 'alpha males', but in a 'man was not meant to know' kind of way.

I was thinking of Sci-fi or fantasy species, nothing to do with that shit-show.

The more validation you need from others about how much of a man you are the less you are worth to yourself as a person. Honestly it's sad how many fall for that bullshit. Ah well, as long as one doesn't need to give them the same pity a rabid dog gets...

You mean the "rewrite" where they replaced Oscar with Roman Torchwick?
The one where Torchwick gets to mock Weiss' chest size to her face in front of all her friends in a bath house scene?
The one where they replace Dudley and Dee with Cardin and Russel?
The one where Cardin and Russel actually manage to help Qrow fend of Adam on the Argus Unlimited?
There one where what Cardin and Russel literally suffer the same fate as Dudley (a smashed arm) and Dee (death by getting smacked off the train)?
The one where Adam killed a White Fang mook begging for Adam's help before riding off on a motorcycle?
The one where Shay D. Man is Raven's lover and together had Vernal?

You mean THAT mess of a "rewrite"?

Eh, i cannot comment, i have not watched the entire thing yet. Just trying to signal boost fan-works for anyone interested, is all.

A bit weird how mentioning it caused such a response. But no matter, if anyone is interested in exploring the fan-work and making up their own opinion, they are always welcome.

Don't worry, if you read fanfiction you'll stumble across it one day.

I read a probably unhealthy amount of fanfiction, not necessarily just for RWBY, and there's one cardinal rule I've found; if someone says some version of they're 'improving the source material' they're at best pretentious and at worst a follower of D&D's 'themes are for highschool book reports' theory of writing.

In RWBY fiction in particular if they also bring up any version of 'Monty's Vision' they also tend to be some combination of asshole, racist, sexist, and Hard Man Authoritarian.

I could see someone trying to expand out the earlier volumes to bring them up to the narrative standards of the later ones not being terrible, doing things like giving them time for more character arcs and interactions, such as the Jaundice arc not taking up a quarter of the first season due to not having a lot of time to make each episode/chapter in the volume.

This feels pertinent, mostly as a reminder the complainer crowd don't actually have a point to make, just bills to pay and outrage to monger.

Citadel Of My Thoughts

Strange that after all the crying about "cast bloat" and "lack of character development" that a slower, more focused volume centered around the main cast is being called "filler" before it even airs.…
Some do it for their bills, others just want something to complain about to make themselves feel better about ignoring their own flaws, especially when they have more in common with the villains of the series than they want to admit, so they need them to be the actual good guys.

Think the major problem is a combination of the lengthy hiatus coupled with the goings on in Remnant.

Plus the trailer didn't really help matters when it opens with "wacky hijinx in Wonderland!" Rather than go all in on the latter half of that introspective "who am I?" Or "could you shed Ruby?"

I would generally avoid trying to assign people qualities based on the characters they like/criticize. That does not seem fair. And it seems to be a thinly veiled personal attack against people, trying to liken them to villains.

As far as the "filler" thing is concerned, a few people holding such an opinion out of an entire group is not an indiction on the entire critical group.

Many of those critical of the show have not commented on V9 at all and are simply waiting to see how it goes.

To outright dismiss them based on a few other people seems unwise.

"No but dude, I need to get angry now about these critics I made up in my head so I can smugpost about them on Tumblr."
