RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

You know what? I agree. I forgot they moved with wires, I thought Penny was controlling them a bit like Pyrrha's semblance. The finale of Volume 1 was a long long time ago...
The way they move like there aren't any wires annoys me.

I think that is his hood, you just can't see any fold lines on it. It's a bit jarring that the girl in green on the far left has the exact same hairstyle as Nora, but black (I'm pretending everyone with the same hair as someone from the main cast is a die-hard fan and changed their hairstyle).
...The guy next to "hunchback" Sunglasses looks exactly like the guy sitting in the middle row.
I went to go look since you said there is a double and you are right.
But I also looked at Tusk horns those arent in her mouth they are coming down from the neck line so they may be Horns instead of tusks.

The tentacles would still get tangled up.
Oh i dont doubt but I think they are suppose to be Tentacle like instead of string like
No question some of the stuff she does would tangle ANYTHING tentacle or strings.

We would need to be explicitly told that Penny controls the sword-guns with the strings before I accept it.

Consider how she lifted the boulders that Russel and Sky hid behind in the Doubles Round -- the wires were taut, leading in a straight line back to Penny, and not using any kind of fulcrum for a pulley action. The sword-gun bits were just FLYING straight up. Despite what she was doing with her hands, that was NOT puppetry.

Hell, the way that she arrayed her swords behind her back -- WELL behind her hands -- in her finishing move against Pyrrha, ought to be impossible. Not only is there no fulcrum, but her hands can't even be TOUCHING the wires in that formation!

As it stands, my headcanon is that the strings are power-cables that feed the bits with the energy they need to fly and shoot, as well as a conductor for her Aura. As a bonus, it also lets her reel the bits (or anything they've caught) back in with the power of the winch built into her backpack, either conserving the energy needed to power their flight, or supplementing their return speed and pulling strength.

None of which settles my grievance that the wires should be entangling and tripping things more often, but at least settles the "you can't puppet things like that!" problem.

The thing is, realistically, there's no way for the wires to suspend the blades the way that they're shown. They could be swung, thrown, retrieved/used like grappling hooks, and maybe whipped, but that's about it.

@Sunder the Gold probably gave the best explanation we're ever going to get.

It's probably not worth thinking about too much.

RT could have done a lot to their claim of Faunus rights being like pre-Civil Rights movement by having segregated stands. Because that's how it was. At the moment it's not really painting a good picture of oppression and just makes the White Fang look like violent pissbabies.

and just makes the White Fang look like violent pissbabies.

I thought that was why Blake left. :V

But yeah, another tic against RT's world building. I can see Faunus hunstmen and huntresses getting according (the bare minimum) respect by all but the biggest racist assholes.

But the average animal-man on the street doesn't seem to be suffering much outside the borders of Expositionstan.

or they're carbon nanotube artificial muscles.

I assumed that was what "control with strings" meant all along (power/data links, not physical leverage). After all, as you said, it would be impossible to pull on the swords to make them fly around like that.

I figured her strings might make more sense if they are all attached to something on her back that can spin along with each individual string being attached to an even smaller circle that each of which allowing for independent movement.

I am a bit disappointed with RWBY's depiction of the prejudice so far, its not been well conveyed, I mean before one could at least assume that it wasn't seen much because the only Faunus is actively disguising herself but the more we see of the public and the harder it gets to take. My current thinking is that maybe the issues are more about stuff like SDC exploitation and mines out in the wilds than stuff within the kingdoms themselves.

It occurs to me that Pyrrha technically was victorious in her fight over Penny it was just very... Pyrrhic.

Well, given that the whole Faunus thing is something of an allegory to RL racial and religious minority issues I think it's something comparable to the United States and other parts of the Western world today: while Faunus are now a commonly accepted part of society and legally equal to humans, the way the informal power structures of the world is set-up still tends to favor humans and there are still plenty of bigoted jerks who feel they have a license to be racist even if they have to be subtle about it.

i meant basically making a tentacle in miniature using microscopic fibres.

That's still not how it works.

This is on octopus :

This is an octopus on land :

Without the buoyancy force to help support them tentacles are largely immobile on land. You need a scaffolding of some sort to act as a lever and pivot point.

Something as thin as wire also would not be able to place the opposition 'muscle' very far apart meaning they'd have poor leverage.

Could aura act like that support?
The Wires are the physical point but the aura shapes and hardens the wires form as the user needs?

I am just guessing here as I am not sure if that is possible.

Frisk Triggerhappy : Anime Aura isn't real

It's essentially magic so sure why not.

and why not have a semi rigid fibre which is then acted on by several billion artifical muscle fibres?

Because at the scale of string the moment force exerted would be tiny.

Disclaimer : This is going into dumb-calc territory. It should in no way effect your enjoyment of RWBY. Remember, RWBY is fully in its right to explain away the character's abilities however it wants.

So, take the human abdomen for instance. Our opposition muscle pairs in our abdomen and back are offset by around, what, six inches from one another and maybe three inches from a common pivot point inside of our trunk.

So assuming you could exert a hundred pounds from each opposing muscle group you would develop :

100lb * 3in * 1ft/12in = 25 ft*lb of torque around the point of rotation.

The thinnest fishing wire I can find is 0.15 mm and I'll use this as a stand in for Penny's wires. So lets say the wire tentacles have oppositional muscles offset from some sort of segmented rigid strut inside of the tentacle.

For simplicity sake I'll assume everything is point forces offset from infinitely thin rigid struts.

The opposition muscles would be exerting their force from a distance of about 0.075mm or 0.0029 inches so to get the same torque you would need this hypothetical fiber to exert :

25 ft*lb / (0.0029 inches * (1 ft/12 inches)) = 103,448 lbs of force. From a fiber a fraction of a millimeter thick.

This is a case where absent an explicit statement from the creators. Its semblance magic. And that's a good enough explanation.

that all depends on their materials science which as we've seen so far is pretty bullshit.

A back of the envelope check would put the muscle fibers thin enough for my, again, measly 25 ft*lb of torque from wire under a stress in the plus or minus a two or three zeros ballparks 3.7 billion psi which because I stupidly did this in imperial units would be around 25000 GPa. For reference the theoretical yield strength of graphene is 130 GPa.

I think I am now qualified to say. You're overthinking things. Just enjoy the show.

That's a very good idea and one I'd... sort of considered, though not so clearly if that makes sense. I suppose my concerns there are two fold, there first is that depicting that more subtle prejudice without being on the nose about it or going over many people's heads is really difficult (Though the fact we've seen no Faunus in positions of power or authority is a fairly strong indicator of bias.) My second concern is... Well a lot of people are liable to not really "get" why that sort of situation would incite a violent response which would reinforce the idea of the WF being jerks for jerks sake. None of these are actual issues with your idea though, its very well thought out.
