RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Tis because the writers came up with Ozma long after they typed Ozpin in.

Give me even one shred of evidence to back that up. And no, "the Maidens are a retcon!" doesn't count.

The more likely answer that doesn't try to discount the fact that this is Salem we're talking about, i.e. a villain who was invented right after Team RWBY and was thus central to the concept of the show itself from the very beginning in favor of throwing out more baseless cheap shots at the writers is that, from a Doylist perspective, Salem used "Ozpin" because we didn't yet know about his backstory and his ability to reincarnate, so they would've either just tipped their hand early or confused the audience for no gain if they had her direct her ire at "Ozma."

For a Watsonian explanation, perhaps Salem purposefully uses the names of the current incarnation in an attempt to dissociate them from the man she once loved but now serves as her sworn adversary. Given that the current host is usually the one in the driver's seat anyway, she wouldn't be unjustified in doing so.

alternatively the minions don't know wtf this "ozma" is.

Would be very annoying whenever the current generation of evil minions mess up because "there's no one named ozma living in that village".

Raven's stinger in Volume 2.

That isn't any different at all from the Maidens thing. My point in bringing that up was this: The fact that retcons exist does not mean that every single perceived discrepancy is automatically a retcon. Before you immediately assert that something is a retcon rather than just bring it up as a possibility, you need to provide some kind of evidence for why it is or might be that isn't just "retcons exist, therefore this is a retcon."

Yang said "Oh my god you really exploded." Way back before Ozpin's "We are in a time of peace" speech.

Questions:
-Should she have said "Oh my gods"?
-What deity has replaced the Brothers of Light and Dark in order for this expression to come about?
-Is it in any way related to Salem and Oz doing their little 'godly power bender' thing before the kids came about?
-Why is it uncommon for people to explode?

Remnant has many religions, just like we do. It's no great stretch that one or two might be monotheistic. There's probably some lingering cultural memory of Ozma and Salem's time as gods, and perhaps of the Two Brothers, but in the present day no one has any more reason to believe them than any other religious doctrine.

That said, it could very well just be a slip on the part of the writers.

I don't get what you're asking with that last one.

perhaps of the Two Brothers,
but literally everyone died... i'd have to rewatch but i cant remember if there's any mentions of the brothers before ozpin shares about them

Given how much Dust is floating around and the rough lives people live, especially at the combat schools, I'm kinda wondering why Ruby exploding is such a surprise :p

Qrow tells the team about the brothers. True he might have learned it from Oz, but the way he talks it seems like a somewhat obscure fairy tale rather than something only he and Oz know.

So, I was linked to this video and I realized how it's perfect for the kind of tone RWBY is going for.

Just replace the dragon with Salem and her Grimm.

Spiritual men sought to comfort those who were afraid of being killed by Salem (which included almost everyone, although many denied it in public) by promising another life after death, a life that would be free from the Grimm-scourge. Other orators argued that Salem has its place in the natural order and a moral right to kill. They said that it was part of the very meaning of being human to end up dying for Ozpin's cause. Others still maintained that Salem was good for the human species because it kept the population size down. To what extent these arguments convinced the worried souls is not known. Most people tried to cope by not thinking about the grim end that awaited them.

Yang was surprised because she initially thought Ruby meant "explosion" metaphorically, as you can see in the scene where she thinks Ruby just had a public meltdown or something.

I think a smaller more honest soul is supposed to mean someone who isn't particularly special or important in terms of status or accomplishments.

Ruby is just a random young girl who's decent at fighting and advanced for her age but she isn't say...

A princess, a billionaire, a world renowned undefeeated fighting champion, an artificial human, a descendant of an ancient and important family, etc. ( we've got some real special snowflakes in this group lol)

So basically the point is that he's gonna beat salem with a sweet innocent naive but kindhearted and optimistic girl rather than a weapon to surpass metal gear. Perhaps reminiscent of what happens to Fraudrin
he gets talked down by a little boy. He spent so much time impersonating a human that he bonded with that humans son, so when his "son" begged him to have mercy and not suicide attack to kill everyone and destroy the castle, he gives in and surrenders to the heroes.
perhaps Salem is supposed to take a liking to ruby for some reason? Silver eyes could be the mark of descendants of salem or descendants of both of them. So you get a kaguya (Naruto) moment where Salem wants to hug ruby and cry instead of fighting her

As for V6E4 did anyone else start to feel really bad for
ozpin? after ozpin expresses that he's been constantly betrayed and abandoned and there's a story told about how salem betrayed and abandoned him and the gods cursed him to walk the earth alone with an impossible task forever, we cut to the present where the entire group turns on him and he goes away in defeated sadness... Poor guy :(

Don't forget the Silver Eyewings

I think its pretty much impossible to reconcile delaying Ozpin's return all the way back to episode 10/11 (which sounds like a good idea) with the RWBY part of the team staying at Brunswick farm and needing rescue from whatever Grimm horror awaits there. That would absolutely kill the pacing, and the gang just hanging out in a house the entire volume was one of the biggest complaints about volume 5 and something the writers are explicetly trying to avoid this time around.

No, judging by the opening its more likely that Ruby and Silver Eye shenanigans are going to be what saves the gang at Brunswick and if they later need saving from Ozpin its going to be when they're already in or near Argus, and their enemy could be either Cinder+Neo+criminals, Hazel or Tyrian or Hazel&Tyrian, Adam Taurus or maybe even a reborn Sphinx Grimm that has advanced to a much more powerful Adult/Senior Citizen stage of its life-cycle as a reference to the riddle of the Sphinx.
