RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Like, to keep this from being a roundtable about how terrible aura is, I kind of want to try to frame the problem I have with it.

The issue, in my eyes, isn't aura itself. As a concept it's good and similar to plenty of other works, especially in various anime. I don't even think the inconsistency is that huge a deal in isolation- plenty of quite good works don't properly define abilities or use them when they should be used, or handwave why they aren't utilizable in a situation rather unconvincingly. Like at the end of the day, the writing isn't why I dislike how they did Aura?

The issue is that they put so much emphasis on worldbuilding, to the point of having a miniseries that went into depth about all the elements of the story- including Aura if I recall correctly. RWBY isn't just some typical shounen show or something where I think some leeway may be fair- I'd prefer handwavium but I can excuse it. The issue is that if you're going to be a story that puts so much emphasis on how the world functions, you need to make sure that It is functioning consistently, and I don't feel like they do a good job of that with aura and it just makes the inconsistencies hit home more because they try to sell this as a show with solid lore and a well-defined universe.

Anyway, the trailer was good. I'm not going to get too hyped because I don't put much stock in any form of trailer, but as they do this one was solid.

Looks like Mistral's criminal underworld is going to make an appearance after all. I was hoping for this, it seemed like a huge lost opportunity to have the heroes travel to a country infamous for its powerful and highly organized crime and then not have the antagonist make use of it to hire assassins/leg-breakers to give the heroes trouble.

Um... that's not Jaune on the motorcycle. It's some old Water Tribe lady wearing goggles.

Not that Jaune isn't a complete load, but I don't think I saw him anywhere in the trailer.

Looked like Jaune in goggles to me, but it's a pretty quick little clip, so hard to tell.

I saw that scene, and was about to make a joke about Yang being annoyed at having to push her motorcycle through the snow instead of riding it, because none of losers she hangs out with thought to bring modern transport instead of walking.

So I checked the scene again, and, wow, there's actually a person sitting on the bike. Not only is Yang having to push her motorized transport through the snow, she's playing pack-mule for somebody who doesn't want to walk. She must be so irritated.

If you watched the trailer again you should have seen that its a freaking ancient looking woman who has entered the last stages of the asian aging process:

So it would seem kind of dickish to complain about her getting a ride. Also its possible that Yang has to push it because its out of fuel or it had a engine malfunction or something.

Is it just me or does that old lady look like that alien that spoke to Rey from the Force Awakens?
You're not the first person to notice that. I've seen a few people bring that up on reddit or Youtube. It's the short stature and the goggles I think.
edit: actually, given that nothing seems to be holding the goggles to her face, I have to wonder if they're some sort of cybernetics. Possibly old models or cheap ones.

If Bumblebee is out of fuel or having a malfunction, then I'm gonna have to tell Rooserteeth to stop reading my story notes :p

You know RWBY always wore its inspirations on its sleeve but this is straight up a copy of LOK era Katara. Like barely legally distinct.
I don't remember Katara having a cyborg witch-doctor theme.

Please, she's got no hair loopies. Everyone knows that's where the copyright is located.
Also THIS. There is nothing new under the sun. If you look around a bit I'm sure you could find dozens of characters that could credibly claim that Katara was based on. Old-Katara does not have a copyright on being an old eskimo woman. That would be dumb. If we started making copyright that strict then no new works of fiction would ever be allowed to be made.

Ok but when you have the exact color palate, a pretty similar look, and even a similar stance at a certain point you have to admit there is some amount of cribbing going on. I mean look at this:

Are you really going to argue that it's pure coincidence and not more likely that given that RT has listed ATLA as one of their big inspirations that they simply took a few liberties?

When you compare them side by side by that it just makes it even more obvious that they look nothing alike other than in the broadest sense. They're old eskimo ladies who wear blue. That's it. If the RT crew used old-Katara as inspiration as a way to get started before then adjusting the concept until they had their own character then who the flying fuck cares? Literally everyone does that. Ideas do not just magically appear out of the ether, everyone is inspired by something.

Leaving aside the minor stuff like different clothes, one having beads while the other has a choker with a medallion, and the lack of hair-loopies (with robo-witch having a ponytail instead) the simple fact is that Katara's varm open and emphatic design is very different from the cold, mysterious oracle like design of the lady who has huge robotic googles/cyborg eyes covering half her face. Not to mention that its just completely ludicrous to cite Katara as inspiration for a staff with a robotic skull on it. Just by looks alone these are very different characters and they evoke very different themes. Once we get to know the character the differences will likely only get more stark. So can we please drop this silly plagiarism nonsense because one character looks somewhat similar to another character?

Again, we would have practically no new works of fiction at all, ever if we impose standards this strict for how similar characters or vehicles or whatever are allowed to look before crying foul.

Either way, it's not a good reveal of the character.

Whether or not it's okay for them to take notes or crib or steal or whatever from ATLA isn't really the point. The fact is that's what at least some people will be talking about. From a marketing perspective, it's just an awful design.

"So what's the plan, Ruby?"
"Don't let anyone else die."
"Ruby, that's a goal, but like - how do we do that?"
"Don't let anyone else die?"
"Ruby. That's not a plan. That's the objective of a plan."

Eh, this seems like one of those faux-controversies that lasts a week or so and burns itself out if it becomes an issue tbh. I'm not huge on the design, but
in terms of sales and optics and whatnot I'm not convinced it's a net loss.
