RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Because I misread the title as Lightning the Fire and assumed it was a pun.
I did the same thing XD
You don't need to spoiler stuff from two years ago.

Pyrrha is by no means a leader. She's strong in terms of combat ability, but she's incredibly passive as a person. Heck, even the bits of fleshing her out in V3 with all the "destiny" stuff just wraps back around to emphasizing her belief in a lack of free will.

She was pretty-looking and an awesome fighter, but she was never, ever more than a love interest and sidekick. She was as much of an adjunct to Jaune's character as Crocea Mors.
I disagree with a lot of this, just assume that I agree with what was taken out:
We saw Pyrrha take the lead during the Breach, much to Jaune's irritation, however she is also very passive, so its kind of fifty, fifty.
Pyrrha explained that her view on destiny was a goal one works towards, not something pre-ordained.
I think it would be far more respectful to describe her as Jaune's mentor.

Hmm now that we know for sure that Ozpin reincarnates and isn't some sort of immortal(though I suppose his reincarnation is a form of immortality just not the type we were expecting) I suppose the old theory that one of his previous incarnations was the old king of vale is possible, though now it just creates even more questions about Ozpin or rather the people he used to be.
With that in mind, am I the only one who finds it interesting Salem refers to him as Ozpin? I mean, maybe its shorthand for the audiences sake, but it seems weird if they've been doing this dance for so long that, that's the name she uses.

I have two theories on the name issue. First that like JoJo's bizzare adventure and how all protagonists names can be shortened to JoJo, Ozpin has something similar going on and Salem just calls him that, after all OScar PINe can be shortened to Ozpin. The second is that the original incarnations name was Ozpin and regardless of who the current incarnation she will always call him Ozpin.

Also maybe the original was called Ozpin and the successors tend to take up the mantle/name whenever they merge with the previous versions. Oscar might be one of the exceptions to avoid confusion (and weirdness if he really is crushing on Ruby) or he might follow the trend in order to show how the whole thing works and as a mark of his development.

Fair enough on both counts, though it'd certainly be convenient for the second newest incarnation to share that name XD

Oh dear lord! Stomach hurts, so much laughing!

Men! Women! Women who dress like men! You have to see this!

On this episode of Drawfee, Pat from Rooster Teeth helps Nathan and Julia design their own original Creatures of Grimm from the Rooster Teeth series RWBY.
Dear lord this shit was hilarious, I am definitively going to check out their other works because these people are a treat. And the Grimm they made are fucking hilarious, I hope (though doubt) the Regurgitator ends up in the actual show because that has to be one of the most creative and sweet special abilities I've ever seen suggested for a Grimm. The Skullcrusher might be to cute to make it into the show, maybe. Tragically the George Lucas Deer/Bad Donkey would likely be impossible to rig properly in the show and so will never have the chance to be canon.

Its special ability is a form of minion mastery. However instead of just summoning Grimm out of the ether it instead eats normal ants and converts them into Grimm and then spits them at the enemy.

This one was made by Pat (who actually is a concept artist for RWBY). Its named after the surprisingly violent way otters kill their prey.

There are no words. Just watch the episode. `

[Public] Volume 5, Chapter 4: Lighting the Fire

So having just watched the episode I have one thing to say, who else wants to see Nora fight Raven's pet maiden and have said Maiden use a lightning bolt?

Now I would say the character death made me depressed about the series... because of how badly handled it.

So the strong female leader with good characterization is killed off so the male audience surrogate character can feel man pain because his girlfriend was killed. I was even starting to warm up to Jaune and then that bad fumble ruined it all for me again. Season 4 didn't help much at all as all the attempts at pathos fell flat for me and not just for Jaune. It was a reminder that the show is still very much an indie project by self taught amateurs. Though season 5 is getting better as it goes back to a focus on high melodrama and comedy which is where I have always found the strength of the show.
I'd say Pyrrha's death had as much to do with her own character arc as Jaune's. Volume 3 gave her a character arc that was actually about her and not her relationship with Jaune. She certainly didn't die just to have him man pain

Send in your Grimm
Tear off my limb
Strike me with bolts of lightning
I won't die~

:V
So Yang and Nora VS Spring or Cinder? I'd watch that.

Anyway head-canon time:

I think the White Fang (before Adam took over) might have been kind of like an unofficial military for Menagerie given the territories shown in Mistrals color seemed to match with those of Menagerie during a WOR.

My belief is that a lot of their work and 'bread basket' style support came form protecting communities too far out and too 'Faunus' to get protection from the kingdoms in any reasonable time frame if at all.

These communities would have been created to avoid human slavers, deportation or for simple independence depending on if this was Pre Great War, Faunus Rights Revolution or post Revolution.

So something I've been wondering about the various military forces of Remnant, especially those connected to the Kingdoms, is how prevalent things like drugs that deaden your emotions might be since freaking out would obviously cause Grimm to swarm on your location. I can see the standard medical kit including something to calm people down quickly for when someone has a freakout in the field.

Damping all emotion leads to a lack of motivation to do anything, which is pretty bad on its own.

It would seem like a better idea to use drugs that induce a euphoric state.

Possibly, although the way I see it the emotion dampeners would be the sort of thing you administer to someone who is truly freaking out and needs to calm down now before the Grimm start moving in.

As I've said before - though I believe in story threads and not here - you should take a closer look at the background characters in RWBY. Specifically comparing their fear-response to what you would expect to see in the real world. Take the episode Breach, for example. The civilians see some kind of explosion or crash. They then see a wave of Grimm crawling out of the wreckage. There are no soldiers, Hunters, or police around to protect the civilians.

What do the civilians do? They run. But the important part is that none of them freeze up in terror. That last part is important because it is a very normal, very human reaction when people are confronted with a threat. Not everyone falls prey to that reaction and among those who do not everyone freezes up every time they are afraid. But it is something that would be a death sentence on Remnant. Freezing up in front of the Grimm means you're the person who gets killed and/or eaten first while everyone else runs away.

Next consider that Jaune had little-to-no actual training before sneaking into Beacon. He was nervous throughout the initiation but he didn't give in to fear when he first encountered Grimm. He's as close as the show has to a civilian in a combat situation in Volume 1.

Those factors (and several other examples) indicate that the people on Remnant don't react the same way that people in the real world do. In effect they have less of a fear response. And in many ways it makes sense - those with a high fear response would panic and draw the Grimm to themselves. Over the course of generations those who are most predisposed towards "bravery" or simply "not being afraid" will be the ones who survive and raise children.

Note this is a similar to the Fremen and Sardukar from the Dune series. So yes, this concept is older than most of the staff working on RWBY!

Incidentally, both otters and elands have some baller-looking skulls.

EDIT: Oh, and when they make the joke about "Bad Donkey" being the mount of "Bad Santa?" Well, luckily German folklore, as f*cked up as it is, has the perfect Bad Santa for Remnant. Ladies and gentlemen, the rider of the Cerberus Eland: Krampus.

[FIRST] Volume 5, Chapter 5: Necessary Sacrifice
New episodes:

RWBY, chapter 5
Something of a mixed bag for me, the world building for Menagerie was interesting from bird to fish Faunus and the brothers actually have more depths than I gave them credit for given their mixed reactions to Adam and regarding him as the one they need "for now". Ruby's speech was solid, rather mixed on Blake's chat with Sun, but I liked her explanation for Adam's toxic personality.

Some tender moments between Blake and Sun, as well as Ruby and Oscar.

Also, death flags for Ghira and Kali flying high as a host's banners, whipping and shredding in a hail-laden wind.

WINGED FAUNUS! FISH FAUNUS!!!
YEEEEES!!!

Next up: them having homes that only those like them have access too....Undersea houses hidden by the waves....treetop or cliffside houses hidden by the shadows...

In any case S5E4 finally answered how aura works, which is literally "when characters feel like it working". That it is NOT passive, its an active effect. If you are caught by surprise, or blow a concentration check, then it won't help you, or won't fully help you.

Still wishing they had bothered to explain this earlier. As in multiple Volumes earlier. Heck, even a few episodes earlier would have been better from a story telling point of view.
