RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Campaign Update #4 - We're almost there!

Holy smokes y'all! Another two Stretch Goals were unlocked today with a very anticipated third one on the way. Both of the goals unlocked today have upgraded RWBY: Combat Ready for all Backers and future owners of the game!

High Quality Black Core Upgrade has replaced the previous version of the cards with a brand new black core for increased durability that is sure to hold up for heavy use and through many play-throughs of the game.

Three New Objectives have been added to RWBY: Combat Ready. That brings the total number to eighteen (18) objectives in each game! (Learn more about Objectives in This Update.)

We seriously can't thank all of you amazing Backers enough.

As a final note… something exciting will be launching in the next day or so. One could even say it's considered to be… Breaking News?

So today I found a Vid by Uniquenameasaurus theorizing that we've seen Haynes semblance(as was confirmed), but we haven't seen Jaune using it. Why? Because it's polarity. His semblance is Pyrahs.

Mostly it's for thematic and character reasons. Similar weapons, closer to each other then anyone else, Pyrah literally unlocked his aura and taught him to use it, and there's the fact he quite literally melted down her gear and took it upon himself.

Word of god was that thing where Jaune lit up was the beginning of a semblance and that we have seen it at some point. The theory also lies on the idea semblances are not innate. So Jaunes interactions and feelings helped shaped it.

Personally I like it because it's interesting and dramatic and fits the character.

It's an interesting theory, I guess, but I don't like it. Jaune isn't a character than can or should be reduced to simply his relationship with Pyrrha (and I argue the same for Pyrrha's relationship to Jaune). Jaune just isn't enough like Pyrrha to have the exact same Semblance as her.

Maybe something that can produce similar effects or is similar on a conceptual level, but outright just having her Semblance? No offense, but that sounds like bad fanfic peddling "twu wuv" dribble.

Less 'Tru Wuv' and more 'He learned to fight like her enough he actually copied her outright'. I personally like it, but then again I'm imagining less Jaune Copying Pyrah's tricks(Which mostly seem to be being invincible by barely dodging everything) and more being the tank that forces people to face him...I also like the idea that Jaune gets to inherit the 'invincible' descriptor but goes about it in the opposite direction.

Like, don't get me wrong, it could super easily be stupid and bad fanfic material. But it also appeals to alot of my favorite things (character development! The dead being remembered! badfanficmaterial!)

The other big problem with that theory is that Semblances all seem to relate to the character's flaws and struggles. The most notable examples of this are Weiss, Blake, Yang, Qrow (as much as I dislike the direction they went with his Semblance), and Pyrrha. Weiss's Semblance is directly inherited from her family, and is all about control. It directly conflicts with her desire to be her own person, separate from her father.

Blake, Yang, and Qrow's issues with their Semblances are all brought up in the show. Blake is terrified of the reflection of her soul being a tool to run away. Yang is too easily led by her anger and rampages when she's fully powered up. Qrow only brings bad luck to everything he cares about, and has to separate himself from the people he cares the most about to keep them safe from himself.

Finally, Pyrrha's Semblance represents the isolation she feels from her peers. The only thing she can attract is fame and platitudes, so she tries to push away the fame and pull closer the deep, meaningful relationships she craves. But she can only do that with metal.

Jaune doesn't have the same kind of struggles. He feels insufficient to live up to the legacy his forefathers set before him. He has big shoes to fill, and he feels insecure about filling them. Failing to save Pyrrha hasn't helped with that. So a Semblance that represents that feeling of inadequacy would suit him best.

Of course, this doesn't fully account for everyone's Semblance, but it could give hints into the inner struggles of other characters. Ruby wants to the kind of hero/huntress that can save everyone, but she isn't fast enough, despite her speed related Semblance. Since Ren's Semblance allows him to hide from other people, does he feel vulnerable getting close to other people? Does Glynda's Semblance indicate that she feels a crippling lack of control in her life, or felt that way in the past? How about Sun's clones? What does that say about him? Or Adam's ability to absorb and charge attacks? Or Nora's ability to gain power from electrical charges?

I could speculate more, but I don't think it's necessary for this post. But I'm curious to see if this sort of pattern continues, as I feel like it's a strong thematic element—the ability to draw power from our flaws and use them to overcome the challenges in our lives.

Hi all -

Good morning - we apologize for the delay.

Today we come in with two amazing triumphant victories! The unlocking of a stretch goal: 3D Semblance Tokens and Adam Taurus plus his White Fang Objective Deck. This goal has upgraded RWBY: Combat Ready for all Backers and future owners of the game!

Semblance Tokens upgrade the cardboard pieces into 3D plastic markers with each player's unique Team RWBY emblem embossed on top.

Adam's Goal brings in the addition of a completely new villain into RWBY: Combat Ready. He comes with a 36-card deck, and the White Fang Objective Card and 18-card deck. Y can now choose to battle Roman Torchwick and his Grimm Minions or Adam and his White Fang!

Additionally, this is a little preemptive, but we'd like to clarify about how the Add-Ons work in those upper echelon stretch goals. We'll post a very detailed update about how to include those items with your pledge, but essentially you'll increase your pledge level by the cost of the Add-On item. After the campaign is over, you'll be able to select the Add-On item you want via our pledge manager app, , BackerKit.

And now, to our morning report with Lisa Lavender… GAME BOX UPGRADED WITH UV PRINTING!

LISA: Breaking news! The rumors so far have proved to be true and RWBY: Combat Ready Kickstarter Backers are receiving another unexpected upgrade! All Kickstarter copies of RWBY: Combat Ready will come with special UV spot printing on the box! In spot UV printing, specific areas/spots of the box are targeted, producing an attractive sheen to those areas, enhancing the graphics of the box!

More information has been coming in about the Grimm incidents at Beacon Academy. Reports from the scene tell us that Adam Taurus, and the White Fang, may have some connection to the attacks. We will provide more information on this incident as it progresses.

Stay tuned for more information.

White Fang goal reached, woo! And the Neo goal is almost reached too.

EDIT: There was one more update too, about an upgrade to the game not tied to stretch goals.

Hello all!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Adam Taurus and his White Fang minions have now been added to RWBY: Combat Ready. This unlocked goal has upgraded RWBY: Combat Ready for all Backers and future owners of the game!
Adam Taurus Villain Pack and White Fang Objective Pack is a whole new addition to RWBY: Combat Ready. Adam's Villain Pack comes with 36 cards and the White Fang Objective Pack comes with one (1) objective card and 18 minion cards. Now you'll have to make the hard choice, do you save Remnant from Torchwick and his minions, or Adam and his? See below for some WIP images from Adam's deck!

A few of you may have found out today that we're at NYCC (New York Comic Con in New York City, NY) and we have a small demo pack that we're showing off. This is entirely true!

If you have the chance, swing by the Rooster Teeth booth at New York Comic Con. We're booth #756 right next to the Crunchyroll/VRV booth.

And now, Lisa Lavender with today's news!.

PLAYER CUBES UPGRADED FROM WOOD TO TRANSPARENT COLORED CUBES!
LISA: Breaking news! Against all belief, another unexpected upgrade is on it's way to become a standard part of RWBY: Combat Ready!

All copies of RWBY: Combat Ready will now come with transparent colored cubes for their player tracker scrolls! Specifically, cubes used for health are now transparent red, cubes for experience are transparent green, and cubes for battle fury are transparent yellow. What a great new addition!

The frequency of attacks at Beacon are beginning to lead us to believe that there may be more than one perpetrator involved. Does Adam Taurus have an accomplice? Are the elusive glimpses of Neopolitan reported… true?

See y'all tomorrow for more exciting news!

RWBY: Volume 5 Trailer - Premieres October 14

RWBY analysis
'RWBY' Volume 5 Creative Team on What to Expect, And on Haters Who Think It's Not Actual Anime
"RWBY" Volume 5, the next season of Rooster Teeth's popular anime-style series, is gearing up for its big debut next week — although the final episodes aren't done yet…
Todd Spangler
  • The major themes of volume 4 were overcoming grief and loss, volume 5 will be about picking yourself back up and getting stronger,
  • Volume 4 was a creative risk for the team because they split them up. The article sounded confident they will get back together, even though they didn't confirm it of course.
  • Writing for volume 5 began in early May, production over the summer and the last few episodes have not yet been written. The planning for the season's finale will probably start around late October. Main production will continue through the end of the year into early 2018.
  • Volume 5 will have more twists, Miles refers to them as Monty-ness, something you didn't expect.
  • Rooster Teeth could produce as many as 12 seasons of Ruby. They have story arcs outlined that would take the show that far, but they have a definitive ending with the four girls in mind.
  • RWBY is going strong, as long as fans keep watching the show, they will keep making it.
  • On October 14th "CRWBY: Behind the Episode" will premiere for First Members.
  • On October 17th "RWBY Rewind" will premiere, a live aftershow hosted by Yssa Badiola and Chad James, it will also provide sneak peeks at the next episode.
Big thanks to @fadingemeralds for linking me to that article!

'RWBY' Volume 5 Creative Team on What to Expect, And on Haters Who Think It's Not Actual Anime
"RWBY" Volume 5, the next season of Rooster Teeth's popular anime-style series, is gearing up for its big debut next week — although the final episodes aren't done yet.
Variety sat down with Gray G. Haddock, head of Rooster Teeth Animation and co-director of "RWBY," and the show's two lead writers, Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross, to talk about the upcoming season, the show's history, and the debate over whether the franchise constitutes bona-fide anime.
"RWBY," set in the magical world of Remnant, follows the adventures of four girls — Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang — who have trained to be Huntresses to fight hordes of evil monsters (the "Creatures of Grimm") bent on destroying Remnant's kingdoms. Volume 5, which debuts on Rooster Teeth's First subscription service Oct. 14, picks up where the previous season left off, with the four heroines on their separate journeys toward the Haven Academy, a Huntsman Academy in the kingdom of Mistral, setting the stage for the next great battle for Remnant.

In Volume 4, "the major themes were overcoming grief and loss," said Luna. "Volume 5 is about picking yourself back up and getting stronger."
Gray said that "RWBY" Volume 4 was a creative risk for the team, because the four lead characters split up and have been walking separate paths. At the start of the fifth season, "questions remain about whether they get back together," he said. (It seems all but certain that the girls will be reunited.)
