RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

The running theory right now is that she doesn't have much choice in the matter in whatever AU she's from
Wait, I thought this was a sorta-kinda retelling of the show. Heck they even showed moments from volume 1 in the trailer.

So what, is the notion that they are starting with a modified volume 1 and then heading off into left field?

I mean seriously, from everything I've seen in-show Faunus don't appear to enjoy getting treated like/referred to as animals. Why would they dress in a manner that prompts that?

Not just that, but everything points to it being Beacon-era related, when she was using a bow to hide her faunus features and pass for human. This outfit REALLY doesn't do that, to put it mildly.

We just don't know. All we know is that Blake doesn't fit with what we've seen in the trailer, and neither does Weiss, given the lack of scar on the 'general' version. Something's fucky.

At the very end of the trailer, Weiss is looking at herself which might mean a mirrorverse thing. Also, if you look at the promo'd character designs, Military!Weiss doesn't have the scar.

So considering the title I have a theory, Esdeath!Weiss is actually Queen of Mantle/Atlas, the Schnees taking power instead of founding the SDC. Cause, Queendom is kind of weirdly specific thing, none of the kingdoms in canon are referred to as Queendoms.

I don't know. Anime seems to have a pretty bad habit of throwing random English words into the title, regardless of how well they fit or mean anything. Given the American base for the show, that might not be the case here, but still.

Yeah but the Weiss on Weiss moment and Esdeath!Weiss not having a scar strongly STRONGLY suggest they're encountering an AU.
The question will be how if that is the route they are going down. Because hopping over to an AU/alternate timeline generally involves crazy magic and/or crazy tech. And while there is tech in RWBY, it's not that kinds of BS and unless Salem/the Relics get involved, high-tier magic isn't really a thing any more (since Ozpin's has weaken over his many lifetimes).

Of course they could be going for a 'Justice Lords' kind of situation where the AU invades the main timeline. Though the question would be why would the writers etc do this? I mean it's not like the RWBY setting is hard to have daring adventures etc in even before tossing alternate timelines into the mix.

Could... this actually be a vision from the Crown of Choice? Like, Weiss or Ozpin somehow asking "What if I/Weiss Schnee was in charge?" but they forgot to clarify "...of Team RWBY."

Ozpin to Ruby - "I do not regret making you Team Leader."

Also Ozpin - *pulling out Choice around the time of Initiation* "OK....who should be Team Leaders this time....."

The funnier pay off is if the answer ends up being "... You know, maybe Ironwood being General/Headmaster was a good thing compared to the damage Weiss did."

More speculation based on little evidence but I kind of wonder if Pyrrha having a recolored version of Weiss's outfit means she ended up going to Atlas Academy instead of Beacon in the Queendom Universe.

That does explain why it's so focused on early volume stuff. If they started this YEARS ago then there wouldn't have been a lot of RWBY content out there when the project started and CRWBY wouldn't have all the details for later volumes nailed down yet, so better to stick to what was already there to avoid major contradictions vis a vis the main show.

If it's already been the works for years then that does increase the odds that it will actually be released this year, and possibly prior to volume 9.

They did say 2022 and I think people were speculating yesterday it would be summer, can't recall why though.

any chance IQ and V9 could end up airing at the same time?
like, I think the current quarter of anime is wrapping up (an anime I was following had it's 12th and final episode today) and given no exact date was given aside from it being this year then it won't start this coming quarter. Thus, it will be in another quarter or 2 before starting.
so either July, September, or right at the end of 2022 with December
give or take a month or 2 around those times.

Okay I was about to get VERY annoyed at that trailer for just being Volume 1 stuff but that very last second did make realize they're being a bit close to the chest about what the series is, even though you can kind of tell what they're going for.

Weiss staring at another Weiss
I wonder if that's (in part) an attempt from RT to capture back the Japanese audience interest in the franchise? From what I understood, RWBY was a big hit in Japan until the story left the high-school premise, so IQ will start with the high-school premise that attracted many Japanese viewers, then have the story change setting and direction, maybe a direction close to the themes of post-Beacon RWBY, but told by studio Shaft to tell the story in a way that captivates the Japanese audience, which will then check the original series to have more content?

My feeling is we'll get one episode that's basically recapping Volume 1 with maybe some hints of something funky going on and some differences, maybe placing a bit more focus on Weiss, since Weiss is the one that the changed stuff in the trailer seem centered on. And then Midway-Towards the end of Episode 2 we get Weiss encountering the other Weiss.
If we keep with the Urobutcher tradition, thing will go off the rails at episode 3. :V

Also Yang's appearance/build just seems slightly off to me. Yes, she's always been the 'fan service' design of the quartet; but she always seemed to have at least some definition to her limbs etc giving a sense of solidity/strength. Here, she just seems slimmer and more lightly built somehow.
Maybe it's simply the character design? Anime tends to have a hard time finding a middle ground between "noodle people" and "Schwarzenegger expy".

Interestingly, the mirror!Weiss that Weiss is looking at has the same outfit as her, and not her military outfit. (look at the high collar)

Does anyone actually have a source on that "RWBY lost popularity post Beacon in Japan" claim? Cos so far I've heard the rumor but seen no evidence and given this project started four years ago, I doubt that's the case anyway.

Only thing I've seen is the constant delays and complications the japanese dub had, and that's all been smoothed out now.

There's also that the JNPR Manga, despite being made by Japanese fans, never got an official release in Japan.

But there is another reason everyone goes back to Beacon: Where else can you set a story if you want all four of the girls and don't have to worry about Salem?

Volumes 1-3 have a time timeline of stuff happening with lots of in-between room to justify adventures. Especially with the semester breaks.

You can't use Volumes 4 or 5 unless you wanna split focus like they did. And no one's exactly chomping at the bit for a RNJR game or show set while they're sitting around in Mistral. I mean I think a Tropico game of Blake running Menagerie into the ground as a dictator would be hilarious, but that's not exactly a large target audience.

Volume 6 has its timeline fully figured out so there's no way you can do a side adventure. Same for Volume 8 and its own condradictory two-three day timeline.

The only time since Volume 3 where you could fit in a side adventure with all of Team RWBY has been while they were working with Ironwood in Volume 7, as seen with Arrowfell. And Volume 7 hadn't even been dubbed/released by the time the project started. And even with that, if you set it in Volume 7, you have to make the story big enough that RWBY and Ironwood can justify taking focus away from the Amity Project and Salem.

Beacon is safe. There's a reason they keep going back to it besides that though, and it's that it is literally the only place you can set side material safely.

What did Ryan Haywood do? I haven't kept up with the news.

Had sex with multiple (possibly) underage Achievement Hunter fans. He tried to cover it up, it came out anyway, and possibly the only reason he didn't leave the building a bloody and broken wreck was because it was 2020 and AH was one of the departments working from home. To say they were murderously furious is understating it. He tried a comeback on Twitch early last year, displaying no guilt in the process, and every member of AH cut the attempt off at the knees. He might be the most extreme case of persona non grata at Rooster Teeth.

Well, I can certainly see why that would make people dislike him. Thank you for your time.

Most likely what did not help was that they had Raven played by Megumi Hayashibara who last time I checked is the highest paid actress in the industry so yeah.
