RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

the oldest ship in the series finally said "I love you" and now we just need Nora to be comfortable in herself again.

Ruby hasn't broken down yet. She ran from the talk at the table, she sounded hollow/tired when talking about The Hound, and when Yang sat with her and hugged her she held her tears in. She's gotten another boost of confidence, but who knows if she can take another blow... Well at least her plan was not spelled out so there is a chance of it working, buuuuut Cinder will probably fuck it up.

I wonder how long before we get people talking about that Ozpin speech moment where the camera focuses on him tapping his finger like that.

Good job Winter on saving Marrow's life....now please both of you get the fuck out of there.

Elm.....please join The Resistance as well. You are soooooo close.

When this is over, the people of Atlas and Mantle will be united. Just as I knew they would be.

Yeah I'm fully expecting Winter or Marrow to be officially promoted to General by the end of the volume. Complete with FNKI and the remaining AOs saluting followed by the rest of the military. Really twist the knife have it be while Ironwood's still alive. I could see it going to Winter Marrow as her second just because Winter is higher ranked.

for a cherry on top
have Harriet and Jacques survive as well. Harriet now HAS to listen to Marrow, and Jac has to listen to a FAUNUS. :D

Robyn watching Irowood's Announcement

Though Marrow being promoted to General would be great symbolism of Atlas being willing and ready to change for the better.

also I want to point out that I like
That it's YANG giving Ruby a speech about blind optimism vs optimism in general and hope. Yang is the one that watched Ruby grow up. Yang pointed out to others how being a Huntress and helping people has always been what Ruby has wanted to do. She watched Ruby talk to Blake that first night and give her reason, her optimistic hope for the future of making things better. Yang also knows first hand where the dark storm of thoughts in Ruby's head could lead her. While we don't have flash backs to show how Tai "shut down" we saw what happened when Yang "shut down". We saw Yang be sad, bitter, and gave Ruby the cold shoulder after The Fall. And we saw how despite it all Ruby got up and moved forward. Yang has seen what happens when one loses hope, and she does not want her sister to fall into the same state she did.

What an. . . untruthful message.
When you're facing the apocalypse things like racial differences just seem petty.

I read a book in highschool about Hiroshima. One of the characters was a christian priest who is looked on with suspicion (especially by a powerful businessman.) When the bomb goes off the Priest is relatively okay while the businessman is.....well fucked up. Eventually the Businessman sends for the priest, because at this point he doesn't care WHO comes. He wants some spiritual comfort rather than just dying alone.

I see this moment in the show as like that. When you're facing the end, you want ANYONE with you rather than just dying by yourself.

Look at all those Grimm in Atlas. PRIORITIES JAMES. Also, that Nevermore on the subway entrance, brrr...
Oh god, the Huntresses are just broken after all they've been through.
Everyone's properly terrified of the unstable general.
Elm, you're an idiot in denial. Vine, you're a shithead.
And in case ANYONE still believed Ironwood had the capacity for decency...
"You call this saving Atlas?!" Marrow goes OFF. And Harriet and Vine continue to be scumbags, and Elm a coward.
"I used to wear this rank with pride, but now I see it for what it truly is, a collar." YES!
And Winter with the save as Ironwood is about to shoot one of his people in the back for speaking truth. Pretty sure she's not throwing him in the brig.
Even Vine looks a bit disturbed.
And now we cut to the people actually TRYING to achive something besides killing their own people.
I love the body language her. Weiss is pacing, Blakes curled up in a ball with her ears down, Oscars at the window.
"Salem won't stay gone much longer." PRIORITIES JAMES, THE BOY YOU TRIED TO KILL HAS THEM.
Oh... Oh. Ruby's... she's finally reached the point she can't just repress.
And Nora's back in her clothes at least. I think the scars will be staying. And she's being too hard on herself over them. "Just another ditzy move from Nora."
And ohhhh boy, Ren's on the recieving end now, and he owns his mistakes.
*Snrk* Jaune: I SHOULD NOT BE HERE.
"All I do is make dumb jokes and smash things with a hammer." "That's not true!" You go Ren, tell her she's more then just that! AND SAY THOSE THREE WORDS.
... Her mum ran from the Grimm and left her behind?! Jesus.
"Boop."
Oh look, a forehead touch!
QROW! And he's found his weapon. And they're watching the cameras. They know it's not just about Qrows anger anymore.
But Qrow's still being directed by it.
"I think you're the better Huntsman." You really are Qrow, and the better person.
Elevator! Bets that it's Winter and Marrow, NOT going to the brig?
We won't know yet, because it's back to Schnee Manor.
"That's what happened to mum."
"I was being childish." No Ruby, you weren't. You still had hope, and hope is never childish.
"Blind optimism isn't great, but no optimism means we've already lost. We need hope." Sums up Ironwood.
Lindsay and Barb are nailing this scene.
Oh god, Pennys awake.
Emerald joins the effort to keep her down.
"Kill me, and I can make sure the power goes to you." Penny NO.
Jaunes support for the win again! Penny is NEVER a soulless machine.
Emerald... isn't the best with motivational speeches, but it works.
Ozpin is fully back in action.
"That's actually a risk we hadn't considered." Ruby has an idea...
James, you idiot, you need better phone security!

Episode thoughts
Well Marrow has had all he can stand and he won't stand for it any more. You won't like the severance package you're about to get thou-
OK Winter just saved Marrow's life.

Yeah, to no surprise Ruby is nearing the edge of her rope. It's all too much, too fast.

Oh good, Ren and Nora finally get their talk.
Jaune realizes he is a massive third wheel for this heart to heart moment and departs in a hurry.:D
And the oldest ship in the show finally says that four letter word people have been expecting for a long time. And there was much rejoicing.

Robyn is (somehow) keeping her head and managing to keep Qrow from blindly tearing off in revenge. Good on her.

Interesting. Prior to this is seemed that the Maid powers were solely under the control of Penny's soul (Green eye mode). But now it seems that the virus is digging far enough in that 'go to the vault' command is gaining some control over them in order to deal with obstacles. That isn't good.

-slaps forehead- I honestly should have seen this coming! It had been previously established that it was Penny's soul that allowed her to resist the virus. And Jaune can boost a person's aura, AKA the power of one's soul.

Right this looks like it's going to be a three, maybe four-way show down between all the various parties. Get your popcorn people; this is going to get messy.

ya know I think I just realized something
window watching has been an Oz thing since likely the beginning(more or less).
back as Oz2 in the GodKing phase we see him staring by a window (before the reflection spooks him).
during Beacon, and especially in the middle of The Fall we see Oz staring out over the campus.
and now with Atlas under siege, enemies everywhere, and no plan in mind, all Oscar can do is stare out the window at the people he so desperately wants to help....but does not know how.

Yeah I get wanting representation and being annoyed by queer baiting. But sometimes the people you assume are meant to be gay.....really aren't. And sending DEATH threats is never okay.

Yeah the moment Oscar was looking out the window I was like 'ah, more signs of the merge'. But this time, at least, he has chosen to defer to this generation's people to solve things, not tried to lead things himself.

...This is only somewhat related but I've never really agreed with some of those takes that the narrative has tried to paint Ozpin as a well-intentioned person with extreme methods, that's always felt like a really weird misconception. The whole "HE TURNED ME INTO A BIRDDDDD" meme is not really based on anything Qrow ever said, for instance (Raven does try to paint Ozpin's expectations and power-giving in a bad light to Yang, but that's her straight-up lying).

Overall, the source of the cast's frustration with Ozpin is quite simply that he lied to them and pretended to have it a lot more together than he really did, and honestly that's more than enough to have people lose faith in you. I never really found those reactions overblown, because... I mean, they have every right to be upset, even as Ozpin has several lifetimes' worth of accumulated issues that justify his actions.

And now, things have gone full circle: Ozpin apologizes and admit he should have tried to trust them, while RWBY & Co have to admit making big decisions and plans means never really knowing if things will work out until after the fact. Trust may be easily broken, but as long as they live, people always have the opportunity to apologize and try to make amends.

So, I took a few screenshots from Ironwood's office from ep 10 because I thought there might be interesting background stuff on the holoscreens, and there is :

I believe this is the first time we've seen precise info on Atlas military formations. They definitely took a beating but this is far from the complete slaughter I was expecting (then again the battle was cut short, but still, props to them for holding the line). Some air cruisers are still operational, which is both good because I like the design and I was kind of afraid they'd gotten Worfed again, but also bad because aerial evacuation of Mantle is a definite no-go with those things around, unless the military ends up rebelling against Ironwood's orders. Also I wonder if those people on the left are Huntsmen teams.

Atlas intel is refering to Monstra as a Leviathan-class, maybe "Leviathan" is more of a size classification rather than a precise species. That or they don't have a goddamn clue what this thing is and they're comparing it to the other biggest Grimm they know.

Aerial photos of Atlas and another location (not sure if it's supposed to be a detailed view of an Atlas district or Mantle). Looks like about half the city is now considered compromised.

So Atlas knows Cinder is there. Security channels must be a complete and utter mess right now : they have a Grimm invasion to deal with, a dangerous terrorist with magic powers is running around, and for some reason the General keeps yelling on the radio about arresting a bunch of kids. Also Ironwood, if you really want to use your army I think she would be a much better target for your fleet than civilians and kids who aren't trying to destroy your kingdom but you do you man.

That's kinda the risk you under go when you dangle the carrot of representation and then your animators add one too many winks to a character.
