RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

People get fired some times guys. It has nothing to do with WB being a monopoly or RT being run by whoever. Sometimes you just look at a balance sheet, say "well we can easily cut 4 to 5 people and not lose any productivity while saving money" and you make those choices. That's how any business works, from Mom and Pop toy stores to Time Warner. Acting like this is some massive invasive act by a power-mad corporation rather than a simple business decision is a bit immature.

Yeah, exactly how much power the founding few of RT have anymore is rather questionable at best as is their hands in decisions making.
Also it's important to note that the founding few weren't exactly the best bosses themselves.

Burnie for example made Matt the CEO because he realised how bad he was getting at times

I mean one of their most well-known traits is that they all drink heavily while on the job. I've said before RT and AH seem like great places to work if you're one of the 10-15 people who are in front of the camera and part of the circle of friends that run the place. Otherwise, it seems like a pretty shitty job.

being okay with sudden layoffs because that's just how things are in the business world is part of the reason things like this happen.

[Discussion] Volume 7, Chapter 8: Cordially Invited
New episode and my reaction:
Oh, oh wow OK so there is a lot to unpack there asides from the massive tension and awkwardness of the party cos oh my gosh everyone I like felt so uncomfortable aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! Seriously great work on that front, my anxiety was through the roof.

Anyway, moving on, while I do wish everyone had gotten fancied up and the Bees had, had a dance I totally get this is a Weiss focused lot and it also makes sense story wise for this to be why RWBY and co were brought along, so kudos on making that all work and for their clever, cunning plan of foxy brilliance XD

Also good on Qrow for abstaining and continuing his flirting with Clover ;) Oh I also liked the team planning session with scar, good content.

The private dinner was genius, I am amazed Robyn showed up but I can see the yarn Jac would have spun "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" and so while she likely expect betrayal she wants to use what leverage she has and Jac wants another dissenting voice that might, might turn to Ironwood's side on his, very clever, as is how the council began to turn. Poor Winter, being stuck with him must be miserable, her exchange with Penny and unlike Ironwood actually being aware of and caring about Penny's feelings and thus not wanting to treat her like a tool or even let her think she is being viewed as one was great, go Winter!

Willow, we final meet Willow, yeeeeees, I love her design and the manner in which you portray the damage done to her by Jac's abuse and the ensuing alcoholism, I like that she managed some degree of security and defiance despite everything. I found her criticizing Weiss for leaving Whitley a bit unfair, while I get the idea, Weiss was herself abused and mistreated and shouldn't be expected to take responsibility for other members of the family like that. Though I am hoping this is framed less as "Willow was right" and more, "Its a complicated fucked up situation and there were almost no moves that ended well for all the people who needed an out.

Also that ending with Watts, oh my gosh, someone predicted that, and he was so operatic and dramatic about it and it was even foreshadowed last episode, aaaaaaaahhh! (Also another clever reason to isolate Robyn.)

So yeah, kudos!

Remember that heating grid they were talking about last episode? Watts just turned it off in Mantle. Remember how the climate in Solitas is so cold that without heating or a projected aura, people will literally freeze to death in hours? Yikes.

Also holy shit, Willow.

Willow's a fucking savage to Weiss.

Also, given the track record of cliffhangers so far, they're most likely gonna resolve the heating problem off screen.

Um it will always happen. Even in a worker run utopia you will have to make cuts when cuts make sense. It'd be like driving a car that has a flat tire.
I mean, you're wrong. It won't always happen. Forcing people into a gig economy where they never have job security and often less to no benefits is not a thing that a "worker's utopia" would have to do. These layoffs happen so commonly not, in fact, because simply the studio would poof into insolvency if they just don't fire a bunch of people. They happen because it lads a few dollars more into the pockets of the already mega rich and because workers have no power. The blithe acceptance that this just has to be what is, is why society is so fucked up. The rich assholes tell you that they must float off workers and you go "well they are rich, so I guess they're right". It just 51 percent of the voting populace didn't accept this, we could, in fact, change it

this might apply to the layoffs RT has had in the past, but I don't see how it would apply to a handful of people getting fired at year-end. I absolutely agree with the point, but I don't think it's particularly applicable here.

Like, this case wasn't mass basically random lay-offs. It was a couple people (including a top creative) getting let go for reasons that aren't clear and probably never will be. In any hierarchical system people will get fired for under-performing or personal issues, and you'd see them getting kicked out of communes or co-ops or whatever too. A much lower rate, sure, but still.

So, some added thoughts based on reflection and in a few cases bolstered by stuff I read after the fact.

So in my initial review I complained Willow was making Weiss responsible for Whitley which I found unfair and I would agree with that if I still thought that is what she intended to say but I am less sure now.

Cos when Weiss said she wasn't coming back, Willow was relieved and pleased for her, which feels contrarian to her later statement unless:

She's just giving Weiss context for why Whitley is so shitty with her, not justifying it, or saying she has a responsibility to fill in for her parents or the adults in her life, just saying "Yeah you did the right thing, but he doesn't see it like that."

Of course we know Whitley had a bad relationship with Weiss even before she left, but yeah, long story short, I no longer think Willow was saying Weiss was responsible for Whitley, merely giving some context as to his perspective.

I did notice the heating units and climate controls but I never connected the dots to the fact that it's always raining. Nor did I realize that Mantle is just as extensively climate controlled as Atlas (which has actual farmlands).

Back in the early days I did use to think on how Atlas is basically positioned to be right on the North Pole, but I didn't think that would be anything more than typical fantasy geography. I like that they have actually made that a core part of the world building and plot, and are really showing how much bullshit is required to actually settle Solitas.

If nothing else, it shows how determined humans of Remnant are to hold core territory even in the face of Grimm and such extreme frozen weather.

Still even with the technological wonders of Dust, I'm surprised a proper Kingdom got started, let alone become what it is today.

In another world Solitas would be just one massive Dust mine and R&D bases and costal fortress cities. No Mantle, nor Atlas for that matter.
