RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

A fun idea I have seen floated on tumblr is that Marrow is not just his Aesop fable but also Maid Marine in the wider narrative involving the Happy Huntresses VS Jac and the Atlesian elite and corrupt system.

its a date.
I mean, they probably didnt know it was a date, but their night to remember was totally a date

That comic was so great it mugged me and I said thank you:

OK, like, Yang being super helpful to everyone is just so perfect, offering to help Weiss with homework, giving Jaune the big sister treatment by braiding his hair so he feels less home sick, and trying a manifold of things to make Blake happy, aaaah, I love it!

I also like that Yang's initial disinterest in the book has nothing to do with the reading aspect (Cos Yang has never been portrayed as a bad student or anti book/scholary) she just finds the writing style off-putting.

I did find her implied to be a bad cook weird, though maybe she was cooking Blake that thing where you make the food black? XD

Also we met Junior's mother, and his brothers, who are all a lot bigger than him and go to the Raven school of intimidation, IE, wear a big Grimm mask and glower at people! They also lost the fight an the bar blew up and it seems like Blake had a grand time, also Yang going on about how she could listen to Blake talk literary theory and interpretations all day, aaaah, so cute!

Heckie, Blake picked up and kept the soda pop lid, which is super cute and also Yang warbling about screwing up aaah so cute! Also Blake wanting Yang to tell her, her favorite books and stories that delivery, uwu, so cute!

Oh and someone on tumblr gunchuck-bees and bloodraven55 noted a slight parallel, Yang said she walked Blake home after their night out, the same way Adam did in the flashback, in the Adam one he 'warned' Blake to be afraid of monsters, while Blake had been talking to Yang about how she reads horror stories because she likes the experience of seeing the monsters, it's subtle but it feels too convenient to be an accident.

Also I mentioned a mugging and that was retroactive, remember how Blake threw a bottle cap into the ocean in her chapter?

That was the cap she kept from her 'not' date with Yang, and she tossed it away out of guilt and shame cos she felt she could never be close to anyone again!!!

So yeah, big feels, loved it.

I believe someone requested this gif at one point:

No one requested this but everyone needs to see it:

Some cool behind the scenes look at the poltergeist.

And with this

Yang officially enters the arsonist club. If we count her blowing up Junior's bar in her trailer then both she and Blake are now double offenders. Weiss does too if we count her burning down the forest in volume 1. Meaning that Ruby is the only non-arsonist on her team while everyone else are serial offenders. This joke gets more and more relevant:

:p

Also thought on the latest episode:
When perusing the mission board Ruby asks "Can we ride a Megoliath?"

Yes I spelled that correctly. Not a Goliath but a Megoliath. I even checked the subs just to be sure I hadn't misheard her.

In my mind this opens three possibilities.
  1. Megoliaths are the evolved forms of Goliath, much like there are Alpha Beowolves and Alpha Creeps, or Ursa Majors. Possibly also like how Sphinxes seem to basically just be superior Manticores (although those could just be closely related species, I'm still hoping for the Sphinxes to have a riddle of man style evolution).
  2. Megoliaths are either a completely new Grimm type that simply sounds similar to Goliaths.
  3. Megoliaths a regional variant of Goliaths that are better adapted to the cold of Solitas. Basically the mammoths to their elephants.

Anyway, more concept art:

Some fun speculation that I hope is answered at some point.

Has anyone posted this Amity Arena news yet?

I expect that Atlas is the sort of place that expects That you know how to be formal and proper when the time comes, but given that the tournament is about showcasing the students themselves and unity it'd be really bad form to regiment their students for it.

Yeah, thats a nice Analysis.

was going to post it when it came out, but i wasn't too sure if it was allowed since it has so many pages.

New episode.
And now, as a direct result of Jaques' actions, we have riots in the streets of Mantle with the military falling back in the face of the enraged masses. I can't even say that they're wrong to be angry, though there are probably more productive ends they could be turning that anger towards... but then, that's always true.

We also saw the return of a few old fan-favourites in the form of Flynt Coal and Neon Katt, if only briefly, as well as a short encounter with the Winter Maiden, who is apparently old enough that she might keel over any day now. And Winter is the only person who's ever allowed to see her, in order to ensure that she ends up the new Maiden once the old one dies.

A training montage too, and the first on-screen appearance of Robyn Hill and her Merry Huntresses. No shots fired so far, but with the state of Mantle at the end of the episode it is probably inevitable. Hm. Figures that events would keep Robyn from learning just what Ironwood is really planning with Amity.
This would seem to be the last real setup episode with events picking up steam considerably.

New episode!!!!!

My review
Hooooollllyyy shiiiiitttttt!

I mean I saw the Jac thing kinda coming, but still, damn that smug bastard!

Also Robyn was very cool, I wander if she surrendered cos a fight with Penny would be dangerous or cos she dislikes the idea of fighting someone she knows is a good kid. Also the Huntresses having invisibility was a cool detail.

Either way I really liked this intro with her and it worked well to establish exactly how Ironwood's goal oriented way of thinking is destructive and terrible, ripping resources from people who need them for some grand project that risks putting them all in even more danger while thinking he's being noble but in no way being the one to face the consequences of his actions.

This also provided good characterization for Clover, he and Qrow's card game was cute and I like their dynamic, Qrow could use someone who gives good advice like that, self esteem verbal judo! However we also see how he will choose Ironwood over everything else which is dangerous attitude to take.

The brief return of FNKI was super fun and the training and mission montage was super fun, also Oscar remains precious and the best way to Neon's heart is to defeat her n battle, fun!

also the lead in to the Winter Maiden's residence creeped me out so much, seriously great direction, camera work and set design, all of it, even the living people feel like automatons! The Winter exchange though. aaah, so soft, so many feels, but the presence of the soul sucker scares me, and I am overtaken wit a strong sense of melancholy. But also seeing Weiss & Winter swap snark and bond, aaah so wholesome, and Weiss is spitting true facts.

Also Blake leading a tired Yang away, much cute! And haha, oh Marrow you have no idea how well they work together, hahaha, great scene :D

I was a bit bothered by the rioters choosing a random car to tip over, I figured that kind of thing is reserved for the enemy groups cars or when things are beyond out of control, and also wow, if things are happening that fast, dang I have no idea where this is gonna go next, things are speeding up fast, aaah, breaks over team, and oh gosh everyone is separated and scattered or gosh aaaaaahhh!

All in all, excellent set up and pay off.

Wait a minute. The Winter Maiden is named Fria. As in Frija? As in Frigga? As in Frigg? As in Thor's MOM*?!

Could that crack theory about Nora being the next Winter Maiden or being related to her end up becoming true after all? Could both those thoeries become true? :o

* Technically Thor's mother was Fjorgyn, but Fjorgyn is mentioned to be Frigg's mother in some sources, and Frigg was Odin's wife while Odin was Thor's dad. So either way there is some relation.

Damn, the Winter Maiden isn't Willow. I was really hoping for that.

Robyn Hill seems pretty cool, I guess we know who Cristina Vee was talking about now.

Thirsty moms

[/SPOILER]
Honestly I never saw that as a real possibility. If Willow was the Winter Maiden then no way Ironwood would let her drink herself to an early grave while locked up in the Schnee Manor. And with the talk of the Winter Maiden being super old and on the verge of death that just further sunk that theory. Willow isn't that old.

Speaking of Robyn, am I the only one who got a sense that she and Clover used to be teammates? Or at least close acquaintances of some sort? They seemed pretty familiar with each other, more so than you would expect from a random politician and a random Spec Ops dude.
