RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Personally, I feel there are two possibilities. Either one they're not trying to actually ship Bumblebee and are just trying to indicate that the two are very close friends. That's not totally out of line with how they act, lots of girls are physically close without any romantic inclination, and it could just be people wearing shipping goggles. That's totally possible. What's far more likely is that being creators who have a lot of internet experience they know that shipping wars generate a lot of fan content and buzz so they're trying to artificially create a shipping war to drive up business and create a lot of free advertisement by their fans.

Considering how Adam is basically the text book example of a abusive stalker and psycho ex-boyfriend I could see a pretty good reason for including Eclipse in the show. Giving Blake a ex-boyfriend who respects her feelings and accepts that he has no claim to her, basically serving as a role-model for how to act if your partner breaks up with you. Because Sun is a good boy, be like Sun, and not like Adam.

Although I wouldn't mind this either. :drevil:

Except Sun's not her ex-anything. At most he's a friend she has a mutual attraction to who she'd likely want to date if given a chance. Bumblebee isn't even that. At absolute most maybe it can be said that Yang has some feelings for Blake, but even that is a massive stretch based mostly on the idea that two people who have any emotional or physical closeness at all must be romanticly inclined, despite the fact that it's far more likely that they're just friends.

Ok, how about big stretch? Medium length stretch? Because until one of them expresses just any interest in the same sex at all it makes the pairing unlikely.
Okay ignoring everything else. Trying to argue that Yang isn't Bi or at least has feelings for Blake is a bit silly. Literally the only one she danced with in Volume 2 was Blake, and the wink she gave her was pretty suggestive as well. If Yang was a dude there would be no question they had feelings for Blake after that. Not to mention last volume established that Yang was desperate for Blake to come back, she needed her to return.

OT3 requires that all members of said OT3 can work together and accept one another etc. And as far as we have seen...actually very little interaction between Yang and Sun so we have no idea how that would work..
Well that means they're besties considering how little interaction other people had in RWBY yet became key structures in relationships.

Oh yes, you could certainly conclude that Yang is attracted to Blake. In fact, it's one of my headcanons that there's a high possibility Yang is attracted to Blake. But that doesn't mean Blake is in any way obligated to return that affection.

Ok, name one time Yang has ever had any stated interest in a woman. It's not like RWBY is shy or coy when it comes to LBGT characters. If Yang was supposed to be bi, why hasn't anyone said that? Why wouldn't the writers say that? They'd have no reason not to and it would only help them with their fanbase. Girls dance with each other all the time at school dances, and the wink was when she was letting Sun cut in, and seemed far more like "yeah girl get it" then it was "call me later".

Sun asking Blake to go to the dance with him was pretty clearly framed as him asking her out on a date, both in- and out of universe. Then the next volume opens up with Blake knowing personal information about his teammates that no one else on Team RWBY knew about, suggesting that Sun and Blake have been on further dates since then. And then there's this:

That's pretty clear boyfriend/girlfriend behavior right there. It might have been a pretty casual relationship that hadn't grown into anything serious yet, but it seems pretty clear that they were dating. The real question mark was their relationship status after volume 3, since running away to another continent to cut all ties is effectively a breakup but volume 4-5 was unclear on whether Sun was acting as a boyfriend or friend when following Blake home. Volume 6 made it clear that he was just being a good friend, but that doesn't really change anything about volumes 2-3.

As for Yang and Blake being "just friends". Yang and Nora are just friends. Yang and Weiss are just friends. Blake and Ruby are just friends. Blake and Weiss are just friends. Blake and Nora are just friends. When she was alive Pyrrha was just friends with Nora, Yang, Blake, Weiss and Ruby.

Yang and Blake though?

They're are currently busy re-enacting the climax of one of western media's most classic romances. Even Blake's crazy ex-boyfriend can see that there's something going on between those two, and that fucker is half blind. Hell even Neptune seems to think something was going on there judging by his attitude in episode 1, and he's barely interacted with them.

Tell me, if Blake and Yang don't tie the knot as it were in this volume, would you BB shippers just give up on the ship altogether? Or would you say "hey, they're taking their time with the build-up. They will officially hook up later."

My bet is on the latter. Which will make you all no different than the BlackSun shippers.

Yes they freaking have. It took us until this volume to get an actual LGBT couple that wasn't a background painting. And that was only one background couple. In six volumes we've had four gay characters, and only two of those have appeared for more than split second.
Compared to most western cartoons that have at most one couple now, or 5 years ago with zero gay characters, or even real life where you're unlikely to know or meet that many gay people.

As someone on SB pointed out.

Hand holding is a pretty clear short hand for romantic feelings in RWBY.

And if you try to tell me Nora and Ren aren't a thing I will strangle you.

No it's pretty on par with most western cartoons since again. We have one tertiary couple who were introduced this Volume and literal freaking background characters. And maybe one guy being somewhat confirmed gay in a light novel. Just because RWBY attracts LGBT shipping doesn't mean it actually has a lot of gay characters in it.

And how many gay people you meet in RL is heavily dependent on where you live.

He said, acting like the fairytale references have ever actually mattered in any meaningful way.
uhhhhh Considering how Pyrrha died evoked Achilles right down to the ankle by arrow. Not quite.

Or Ozpin's connection to the Wizard of Oz just being a regular ass dude.

Qrow and Raven are literally Odin's two ravens.

Or Ironwood the Tinman being half robot.

Or Leo the Lion being a coward.

Or fuck, Cordo is literally the woman in the shoe. Right down to the mech's foot being the only visible part of the robot till she busted the full thing out.

The fairytale references have never been stone cold law, on what has to happen or what the character has to be like (see how Cinder is cinderella and is as far from the fairytale in terms of personality ever) but there inspirations often play a very large role in some part of the characters on the show. It varies on a case by case basis, but "never ever actually mattered" has never been true.

Cinder disfiguring herself to become a maiden has a lot in common with Cinderella's sister's trying to break their feet to fit the slipper.
