RWBY Thread III: Time To Say Goodbye

Stop: So gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
so gotta few things that need to be said real quick.
We get a lot of reports from this thread. A lot of it is just a series of people yelling at each other over arguments that have been rehashed hundreds of times since the end of the recent Volume. And I get that the last Volume - and RWBY in general, really - has some controversial moments that people will want to discuss, argue about, debate, etc.

That's fine. We're not going to stop people from doing that, because that's literally what the point of the thread is. However, there's just a point where it gets to be a bit too much, and arguments about whether or not Ironwood was morally justified in his actions in the recent Volume, or if RWBY and her team were in the right for withholding information from Ironwood out of distrust, or whatever flavor of argument of the day descend into insulting other posters, expressing a demeaning attitude towards other's opinions, and just being overall unpleasant. That tends to happen a lot in this thread. We want it to stop happening in this thread.

So! As of now the thread is in a higher state of moderation. What that means is that any future infractions will result in a weeklong boot from the thread, and repeated offenders will likely be permanently removed. So please, everyone endeavor to actually respect the other's arguments, and even if you strongly disagree with them please stay civil and mindful when it comes to responding to others.

In addition, users should refrain from talking about off-site users in the thread. Bear in mind that this does not mean that you cannot continue to post tumblr posts, for example, that add onto the discussion in the thread, with the caveat that it's related to RWBY of course. But any objections to offsite users in the thread should be handled via PM, or they'll be treated as thread violations and infracted as such.

Hey, if it's not tokenism, then what else would dwelling the camera on a random girl with a face in an army base of comical faceless goons be classified as?

And I wasn't actually wanting to pose that as a criticism, only as a neutral statement of intent. Like how Call of Duty 2 made a generic female Red Army soldier in one of the Soviet campaign missions for no reason other than to show that they could, and because there was historical precedent for the Soviets drafting a handful of women to fight in WW2.

And as for Adam, if he's not dying here, then he really needs to find another purpose in this show really soon. I'm still standing by the hope that he kills Raven.

How this episode should have played out:

Jaune walks up to the group with a bunch of a fake military IDs, and when they question him he admits that his specialty is fraud.

But we see other faces too? It's just that the caps of their... hat things are rather low and that angle was a 'looking up to the sky' one. We see other soldiers with eyes in the same episode - notably at the console next to the mad queen.

So... new powers out of nowhere, a bland speech that is contradicted by earlier showings, a goofy-ass antagonist, a giant mech that is a complete non-threat...

@devilkingx2 look I don't want this to sound insulting or anything... but if this is really hyping you up, you should watch some shows that really get you hyped. I can provide some recommendations. Because this is a joke. Sure they're fighting a giant mech. It's also no threat at all. It's not even a cool curbstomp. At least those you can cheer about how awesome the protagonists are. This is demonstrably not that. This is a joke antagonist. And I'm not even laughing at the joke.

This is like volume 5 all over again. A first half that is actually interesting and is going somewhere, but somewhere around the second half it near completely shits itself. And here I was actually rooting for this volume. There was some genuinely good content. Sure I pointed out some problems, but they were small potatoes compared to most of the rest of the series.

Ok in order: First what new powers? Earth Dust has been used to this exact same effect before that isn't new. Second, you really consider "We've fought giant monsters before, this is just an old lady in a giant mech" a speech? That's barely a sentence. Also what information does it contradict? Third I'll give you the goofy-ass antagonist, but that's hardly new to this show nor likely meant to be treated as a dramatic battle of wills. I'm pretty sure that's being saved for the actual emotional fight between the major antagonist with Blake and Adam. This is more of a side-show. Finally what makes the mech a "complete non-threat"? The fact that RWBY wasn't killed the second it attacked?

First you're gonna need to provide a cite of Earth Dust creating giant walls on command. Next, yeah that's supposed to be motivational, no different than Ruby going "we don't need no adults" and likewise is contradicted by them never really fighting any giant enemies. Like okay, there was the Nuck and Paladin, but the first was only a threat because of Ren's baggage, and once they got their shit together it was a pushover, and the second was a prototype not that much bigger than them. So no, they really haven't faced any giant threats. Finally, the mech is a complete non-threat because the giant missle it fired was effortlessly swatted out of the sky, it moves slow as molasses, and the slow, dramatic build-up of from the fuckoff cannon was effortlessly negated by Weiss with like a half second of charge time.

On an unrelated note, even if Blake and Yang do beat Adam together, BB still won't be canon. Yeah yeah, point out all the small subtext you wish, but the actual text is straight-up telling us that Blake and Sun are a thing. Seriously, a kiss, romantic music, Blake eagerly saying she wants to see him again soon, the profuse thanks, sad look when he says he's leaving, her parents showing explicit approval with even Ghira being won over... If even half of those things happened between Blake and Yang BB shippers would be screaming from the heavens. I mean, look at how much they're flipping out over the two riding on a motorbike.

The wall of Earth trick is really similar to the wall of ice trick, and we've seen Blake use Earth dust in a clone to make a rock clone, thus it's the same effect just different dust. Second I never said it wasn't meant to be motivational, I took issue with the idea it was supposed to be a "speech" that's why I pointed out that it wasn't a speech, using the word "speech" while disputing the idea that it was a speech. Third, are you forgetting the Giant Bird and Scorpion monster they fought when they first met? Or the giant bear monster? Or the giant Rock monster they fought? Like you seem to be really reaching on the idea they've never fought any monsters. Finally, I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on if the mech counts as a threat given the fact it's 10 stories high and pretty likely immune to most of their attacks.

When did I ever once point out any subtext? I don't even like the Bumblebee ship. I'm a huge fan of Eclipse and honestly think Freezerburn is the best ship they could go with on this show. You're kinda getting a bit worked up over nothing. I remember the ATLA shipping wars. I still see the burning bodies if I close my eyes. Compared to that, the shipping in RWBY is like a fun little game of Mad Libs.

Your forgetting the Nevermore. A rather blatant and large omission.

I actually am laughing at how much of a cartoon supervillain caroline (or whatever her name is) has become. It's honestly hilarious that she went full power rangers villain, it will be even funnier if team RWBY hops onto a giant verson of weiss' white knight and the battle treats it like a Megazord. Actually wait, maybe i should be thinking about pacific rim, hmmm...

Anyway:

1. I'm hyped because things are happening again, i feel like things slowed down and got lame since they got to argus, that was where the volume 5 flashbacks came in for me

2. We haven't actually seen the mech do anything yet, if it can shoot down a ship i can imagine it has weapons that can harm a teenager, unless the show is gonna confirm huntsman aura > airships.

3. This finale isn't shaping up to be on the level of 3 or 4 yet, but it's nowhere near volume 5 tier, it's far too coherent and logical. (They haven't had the villain stand literally in the background waiting patiently and quietly while the heroes talk to each other for several minutes yet lmao)

One of my favorite episodes of dragon ball super was like this actually, so I have some hope for how great this episode of RWBY could turn out

but if this is really hyping you up, you should watch some shows that really get you hyped. I can provide some recommendations.
Feel free to send recs for other shows my way though, I have been watching a lot of stuff lately (hulu has a shockingly solid anime selection) since I beat all my PS4 games

Shipping is not about reality.

It's about hopes, dreams and fanfic!
You say that, but I see way too many people taking it 100% seriously and thinking it will legit be Canon. I have no objection to shipping as long as the people involved know it's not going to be Canon. I mean, one of my favorite ships that is sadly mostly dead in the water these days is Baked Alaska. No way in hell that will ever be Canon.

Even by that RWBYs fandom is fairly tame. Remember with Korra how people were complaining that it kept Aang and Katara canon? Or how long people insisted Harry and Hermione should be the main couple?

After those people going on about Bumblebee is unbelievably tame. Especially since the show not being over and a lack of Word of God AFAIK means it is still possible.

I don't often interact with shippers from other fandoms, but I have seen a good number of BB shippers call anyone who doesn't support their ship for whatever reason homophobic. Freaking wasps. They also go out of their way to demonize son

Don't get me wrong, RWBY has it's share of toxic shippers. Thankfully its smaller than in most places I've seen and I don't recall seeing any in this thread. Best to let the calm ones do their thing and ignore the worse ones as long as they stay a minor annoyance.
Or how they went apeshit over who Korra ended up with?

Also, the Klance incident for the Voltron fandom.
I didn't mention Korra and Asami since that seemed to blow over rather quickly on both sides and seemed more elation that they confirmed it than anything rather being a sore spot half a decade after the show finished. Though I might just not be in the right places.

And I never really got into Voltron or its fandom, it was on to early in the morning for me as a kid IIRC.

In that case the most toxic shipper I ever saw was some guy who refused to get over the fact that Korra x Asami became canon. He kept shitting up Korra threads on Spacebattles for fucking years with his constant whining about how Korrasami ruined the show and how KorraxMako was the only pairing that should have been.

You mean besides the guy you're talking to? Because the way seven takes absolutely every chance he gets to talk about how bumblebee shippers are toxic monsters and how anyone who thinks their ship has a chance of becoming canon over his ship is itself pretty damn toxic.

I didn't know he supported any ships? Given that, I'm inclined to think this is more an overreaction to a bad experience and maybe some naivete r.e. shipping wars than anything else.

If we're talking about insane shippers all of you should google the "hall of anal devastation"

500+ posts EACH (there's at least 4 but only 2 are easy to find) of shippers losing their minds over whatever pairing the hall is for

My favorite is multiple people claiming that naruto and sakura not getting together ruined their entire lives and kishimoto sent them spiraling into depression

Have you ever been so invested in a TV show that the way it ended ruined your whole life and made you depressed? Lmfao
