I'd be down to do this or something similar in the next cycle. Ideally we can get a Yuno discussion in there as well.

Q: do you view this as the first step? How much progress do you think would be made?

I think it's as likely as not that he tries to outrageously screw us or outright refuses. And then our relationship deteriorates further.
We could always make it a tripartite deal with another clan included so that he can't just screw us over, if you are worried about that. But frankly, I'm perfectly willing to give him, for instance, the Daybright seal chain that Jiraiya left to us. The real currency here isn't seals or what we get out of it, it's the goodwill we produce by engaging in good faith.

      • His memory issues pose a problem, but there are options.
        • 1: Don't keep him within Leaf itself, rather his own cottage nearby where he can be visited/brought goods.
        • 2: He could expend his chakra before visiting so he doesn't harm anyone while in the human path.
        • 3: He can keep a Bear with him to keep him company/rein him in.
        • 4: See what help Tsunade/the Yamanaka can offer his mind. Maybe pacification genjutsu, if he consents.
  • Visit Mareo
    • Apologize for not visiting more frequently. Many issues required Hazou's ongoing attention.
      • Akane (the one who reminded Mareo of his niece) disappeared on a mission, presumed dead.
      • Lately, some of his subordinates and village have been angry with him for miscellaneous reasons, including being accused of heresy.
        • Hazou and several members of his Clan aren't originally from Leaf, and Hazou's been especially slow on the uptake. Some of the nuances of Leaf culture are still lost on him.
      • That being said... if Mareo were interested in joining the Goketsu, but concerned with being an outsider in Leaf, he'd be in good company.
      • The leader of Leaf, Sarutobi Asuma, is the Monkey Summoner. If Mareo/Kumafuwafuwa would like to speak to him directly, Hazou could arrange it.
I like the idea, but "hey Maero, how's the safety and calm of bear going? Our clanamates are dieing and our clan is enmeshed in religious drama! Wanna move in?" may not be the best pitch.

In the plan, this is placed after the sealing section, which is possibly a huge problem, because the QMs have historically tended to write plans in order, top to bottom, and dealing with the Mio situation needs to happen immediately, not after 10 days of sealing. In fact, I'd prefer if there were no sealing section at all so that we have the option to take action quickly in Thursday's update.
I agree with this. I haven't yet voted for a prominent plan, but this change would probably earn my vote.

Jin reached into his bag once more and produced another, much shorter scroll. Hazō unfurled it. It was barely a scrap of paper, with a handful of words written on it.

I, Lord Gōketsu Hazō, order Gōketsu Jin to share all techniques learned in the KEI ninjutsu exchange for the betterment of the clan.

"If you would sign it," Jin said, "then I will acquiesce that the choice is no longer in my hands, and provide the technique."
"I see," Hazō said. "Thank you for the feedback. If you have anything more you need to say, just know that my door is always open."

"It's not," Jin said. "And if it were, you're rarely there."
[⚔] Give Jin lessons on how to be prosocial and make it clear that it will be to his benefit

I don't know what to do about Mio. The problem is ultimately just that her expectations are unreasonable. If it was sensible for the core Gōketsu team to be doing regular missions, making her a part of that would make sense, but it's not. But still...

[⚔] Explain decision theory to Mio and show how her actions are contributing to the cycle that makes it hard to help her

      • Our ideas:
        • Discuss necromancy with her.
        • Release her to the Yamanaka/Nara/KEI with oaths to keep Goketsu jutsu secret.
        • Get through to her.
          • We didn't grieve her sister like Akane; she didn't grieve Akane like her sister.
          • We're a convenient target for her rage (misplaced grief).
      • Can they handle this? Are we needed?
    • Jin:
      • Don't sign the order.
      • Thank him for explaining. Apologize for putting him in that position.
        • We might negotiate with the KEI but won't ask him to break his oath.
      • We want to do right by him/everyone. How can we encourage clanmates to raise concerns unprompted/early?
  • Ma and Pa.
    • High OPSEC Human Path meeting.
    • Throughout, if they drop Lore, listen/encourage.
    • 3D sealing:
      • Give them some [bark] crystal. Have they seen anything similar before?
        • Explain ES, Cannai's insights/thoughts.
      • It's the key to the Great Seal.
        • We'd ideally like earth jutsu which replicates the infusable qualities.
    • Necromancy:
      • Tell them everything: the Rift's origins, what we've seen, progress on opening it.
        • Leave out praying to Jashin and potentially using Naruto as a chakra source.
      • Lay out the problems - the Akatsuki, new world wars, etc.
      • We will get Jiraiya back.
      • Do they know anything, have any ideas? Will they help?
  • Sealing:
    • Buy 1 FP (-10XP)
    • SC test MARS Rocket Boots.
      • Multiple RBs simultaneously.
      • Atypical locations (elbows, palms, etc.).
      • RB kunai - boosts RW?
    • SC SSA: MS8.1 Anchoring. Full prep.
    • Prime SSA: Reusable RBs. Full prep.
      • Improve the seal until it challenges stagnation.
      • Goal: six uses, then maximize the bonus.
    • Non-SSA SC.
      • Research/use Dampeners.
      • Full prep 4FSoP.
      • Substitution, Cold Seal, Electrocution, Twin Repulsion.
      • Abort difficult seals. Don't risk failure.

Jin:
  • Don't sign the order.
  • Thank him for explaining. Apologize for putting him in that position.
    • We might negotiate with the KEI but won't ask him to break his oath.
  • We want to do right by him/everyone. How can we encourage clanmates to raise concerns unprompted/early?
Bolded line feels unnecessary and anti-collaborative. Also, the justu in question really isn't useful to us.
I think this line should be cut.

Necromancy:
  • Tell them everything: the Rift's origins, what we've seen, progress on opening it.
    • Leave out praying to Jashin and potentially using Naruto as a chakra source.
  • Lay out the problems - the Akatsuki, new world wars, etc.
  • We will get Jiraiya back.
  • Do they know anything, have any ideas? Will they help?
Do we expect this to help? It looks to me like a bunch of words spent for basically no gain. And it opens up new OPSEC risks.
I think this section should be cut.

I kind of agree @FaintlySorcerous, what are we expecting to gain here? We might leak necromancy to other parties (Asuma, Naruto) and we don't really need the Toad Sages to do anything Re:Necromancy rn.
We know next-to-nothing about the Pure Lands right now. If they have lore, we need it desperately: we need to figure out how to survive in there. I expect that we'll either need to or really want to consult with them prior to our first serious expedition and probably prior to our first nontrivial experimental visits.

I also expect them to come down very strongly in favour of reviving Jiraiya, and similarly strongly motivated to keep us alive. If something kicks some jutsu or Gamabunta or anything else loose, I expect it to be this.

If it's very important to you (and @Left-Hand Mutant and anyone else) that I cut it, I'm happy to consider it, although I'd like to swap my doing that for support in getting a Yuno conversation happening within the next few updates.

E: they're also not really an OPSEC risk surface IMO. Naruto already knows what we'd tell them, more or less, and I don't think they'd discuss it much with the other clans.

What information are you specifically worried about getting out? We wouldn't mention that we plan on reviving Pain over Jiraiya, certainly.

Moreover: we've brought Naruto into this on at least a surface level. I expect that he'll discuss it with them, given that it's about Jiraiya and that he doesn't fully trust us. If we reach them first, it's better for us.
Bolded line feels unnecessary and anti-collaborative. Also, the justu in question really isn't useful to us.
My concern is that we could appear two-faced if we later get in touch with the KEI and arrange things such that he's expected to give us that jutsu. My intention isn't to swear that we'll never issue that order, if only to avoid setting the precedent of 'I promised a dead guy' being a shield someone can hide behind.

Uh. Uhm. I didn't read the whole of the chapter yet. But how the Naraka did Hazō decide to invite random Clan members to his Jashinist mission? It's not part of the winning plan, it's something the players specifically decided not to do and even taking into account that the Hazō-pilot has been strengthened, I have a hard time understanding why Hazō would think it's a good idea. I mean that question of whether it's a "Jashin thing" was not a difficult to predict question.

Anyway, I haven't even read whether Hazō succeeded or failed that deceit roll. So that's what I'm gonna do now.

Made some updates.

Chiefly, the necromancy part of the plan has been scaled back. Ma and Pa might call us on not giving them the full truth, so maybe I'll cut it, but honestly I think we could do with their help, and I expect them to be strongly in favour of rescuing Jiraiya. Some other misc. changes, too, but that's the big one.

We know next-to-nothing about the Pure Lands right now. If they have lore, we need it desperately: we need to figure out how to survive in there. I expect that we'll either need to or really want to consult with them prior to our first serious expedition and probably prior to our first nontrivial experimental visits.
My expectation of them having any usable intel is zero. Even if they do have something to share, IMO it makes sense to wait on this until we are closer to Necromancy, since we're concerned about information leakage.

My expectation of them doing anything about Necromancy before we have brought back the literal dead is zero, they're going to think Hazou is full of brag, and give him resources accordingly.

I'm not extremely worked up about this, but my preference is cut.

If you feel strongly about it, by all means, keep it in. I think we'd be better off asking Cannai tho, the Toad Sages are all bark and no bite (kinda like Jiraiya now that I think about it). Cannai is serious business.

My expectation of them doing anything about Necromancy before we have brought back the literal dead is zero, they're going to think Hazou is full of brag, and give him resources accordingly.
I disagree that they haven't helped us; they saved our asses when we showed up at the Conclave, believed us about the Dragons, and have done a lot more for Noburi than he really deserves given that he hasn't done much that Toads respect.

The issue of them believing us was part of why I initially wanted Naruto there - he can confirm that we started talking about the Toad kata without having had any way of knowing anything about it.

If we're scaling back to what Naruto knows, maybe he should be there? Why did we cut that?

As it is IMO it's fine, also in the Sealing section you can cut "Cold Seals" since we aren't trading Harumitsu for them

If we're scaling back to what Naruto knows, maybe he should be there? Why did we cut that?
I objected to having Naruto there on the grounds that, if we're brainstorming other ways to open the rift with Ma and Pa, Naruto being there means he'd know of any methods they come up with. And then in the hypothetical where we go for stealth necromancy (the variant that attempts to evade both Akatsuki and Leaf attention), Naruto would be more aware that the rift could be opened by other means and consequently less likely to sit idle long enough for us to pull our gambit off.

Framed another way, our ideal version of Naruto is absolutely confident that we can't re-open the rift without him, because then he would be confident that the necromancy mission can only end with him present, and the fact that the home team hasn't asked him to come re-open the rift must then mean that the expedition is still on-going. We probably can't get him that confident about it, but the more confident the better.

As for his value to this meeting... I dunno, maybe his testimony would be useful? But it's not like when Hazou showed the Toad Thrust to Naruto in the first place, where he only recreated the movements and Naruto went "yeah I recognize that". The main reason Naruto doubts us is that, even knowing that we're being honest, it's not out of the question that we once accidentally saw Jiraiya do the kata but then forgot it. If Ma and Pa are at least as good at detecting honesty (which, honestly, I very much expect) it should be easy to convince them that Hazou believes his story and isn't hiding information, which would leave them in the same position of "that's very telling... unless your memory's off". And from there, having Naruto's testimony wouldn't really add new information to the ecosystem.

So it comes down to, would Ma and Pa be unconfident enough in their assessment of Hazou's accounting of things that Naruto's testimonial would be valuable? Personally, I lean no, so on net I have a small antipreference for paying the cost of making Naruto that much more aware of ways he could be circumvented in stealth necromancy scenarios.

My concern is that we could appear two-faced if we later get in touch with the KEI and arrange things such that he's expected to give us that jutsu. Jin is literally the only Water element Taijutsu user in the clan. We do not need this. We have no use for it. If we did eventually decide to buy this perticular jutsu from KEI, we'd want to include Jin in the conversation anyway.

Currently, Jin expects us to have no regard for his morals/honor.
Right now I want to convince him that we are reasonable, and do respect his morals/honor.

If we manage to succeed so hard that he thinks we value his honor above most other considerations... We will have been a astonishingly successful at changing his opinion.

If he apparently goes power-mad and trys to bully us with this, we'll just... Say no? Then start correcting him in the other direction?

Anyway, please do cut this. Hazou doesn't need to debuff his own socials out of fear of excessively succeeding.

Makes sense. Drop all the strategy/atkatsuki shit and make this a one-line section just asking about the pure lands.

It's not like Ma and Pa are going to give great stratigic insight to a nuanced and complicated situation on the human path.

If it's very important to you (and @Left-Hand Mutant and anyone else) that I cut it, I'm happy to consider it, although I'd like to swap my doing that for support in getting a Yuno conversation happening within the next few updates.
These aren't hugely costly mistakes, but they do seem like clear unforced errors, and I would really like them to be cleaned up.

I'd love to talk more to Yuno.

Why not use the word count these cuts provide to ask noburi/Maria if our planed Yuno conversation is wise? This would make sure we aren't stepping on their toes and coordinate our messaging.

Or just write the yuno bit outright if you think you have the wordcount?

By the way, thanks for being so communicative and responsive. I appreciate you.

Can you provide a citation for this being a jutsu which is only useful to water-element taijutsu users? (if so, why does Noburi know it?)

My read isn't that he expects us not to value his honour. I think that being straight with him that we might wind up with the jutsu another way is a better idea which is more respectful of his honour.

I think it's worth letting them know that we aren't idiots, and it doesn't fit into one line given that we're going to tell them that we've literally visited and rescued someone from the afterlife.

I'm not going to ask EJ to write a meeting asking if we should have a meeting. I value his sanity and continued goodwill. This will get covered in the sanity check and optimization when we go to talk to Yuno.
Or just write the yuno bit outright if you think you have the wordcount?
I don't - I need at least a hundred words and I don't have that much space, nor do I have room for an additional scene - we're currently pushing it at three and what might be a fourth for the sealing. Four scenes is an XP penalty for EJ.

In summary: I'm going to leave the Ma and Pa section as is but I'll cut the line you don't like in the Jin section in exchange for your vote.

Currently, Jin expects us to have no regard for his morals/honor.
Does he? I'm finding his thoughts hard to parse overall, and that extend to the purpose of the signable document he gave us. If anything, my current guess would be that providing the document to us makes it easier for us to back out, streamlines the situation into just "does Hazou sign this thing I've handed him?" If we do, he can't be held accountable for following a direct order. But if we don't, he's clear to act like the initial order doesn't apply to him.

Just like that, in one move he excused himself from the previous order, without putting himself or Hazou in a compromising position. It's a perfect resolution, if Hazou does indeed choose not to sign the document. No egg on anyone's face, no ambiguity in the orders, nobody getting forced to do anything wrong.

And it's hard to see that as an accident. If it's not, then Jin was intentionally giving us an easy out, relying on his faith in us that we'd take it. A clever solution for a clever guy. (And even if we do sign it, he's still in the clear. Unambiguous direct orders after all, nothing he could do about it)

It was a remarkably clever move. We ought to consider giving him a role in clan decision-making. Do we still have any open positions in the clan cabinet thing Paper came up with? I can't find the infopost.

PSA: Organisational roles

New rules are now in effect behind the QM screen to model organisations and inter-organisation combat on a mechanical level. They are not directly available to the players (or NPCs). There are seven stats that we are using to represent the core features of an organisation, though additional Aspects or stunts are possible on a case-by-case basis. Organisation stats work on a similar (0-80) scale to character stats. These seven stats are:
  • Bureaucracy. How efficiently your organisation is run; allows you to more effectively take advantage of opportunities or respond to problems as they arise.
  • Influence. Measures your organisation's political sway through concrete personal connections, understanding of key external players, and ability to create consequences for those that disagree with your plans.
  • Intelligence. How effectively your organisation can acquire pertinent information and uncover secrets, as well as how effectively your organisation can monitor and prevent other groups from gathering intelligence on you.
  • Loyalty. How loyal the people of your organisation are to the organisation's leadership and its overarching cause; allows the organisation to work harder on tasks of particular importance.
  • Might. Your organisation's capacity for physical violence; can be used as a threat, or directly exercised.
  • Reputation. How your organisation is perceived in the public eye; affects passive attitudes of characters and other groups towards members of your organisation.
  • Wealth. Represents money, businesses, lands, and other material or financial assets owned by your organisation, especially those that produce ongoing value.
These rules will be used behind the scenes whenever we need to adjudicate questions such as "Are the Gōketsu successful at making the Hagoromo look stupid to the public?" or "Do the Gōketsu beat out the Hyūga to gain ownership of that highly lucrative new onsen that opened up?"

What this means for the Gōketsu is that you can now optimise the clan's effectiveness by assigning characters to specific roles. A role is a full-time job that allows the holder to add their AB for a specific stat to the organisation's corresponding stat. For example, Hazō occupies the Gōketsu Clan's leader role. This allows him to increase the Gōketsu Clan's Loyalty stat by his Presence AB (+2).

Each role can only be occupied by a single character, and each character can only have one role. Not all roles need to be filled, and not all characters can occupy all roles, based on their narrative circumstances (e.g. Yuno cannot be the Gōketsu spymaster).

The full list of roles is as follows:
  • Ambassador:
    • Responsible for interacting with the common people.
    • The ambassador adds their Rapport AB to the organisation's Reputation score.
    • The Gōketsu Clan does not currently have an ambassador.
  • Administrator:
    • Responsible for managing the clan's internal affairs.
    • The administrator adds their Management AB to the organisation's Bureaucracy score.
    • Gaku is currently the Gōketsu Clan's administrator.
  • Diplomat:
    • Responsible for building relationships with other clans and groups of interest.
    • The diplomat adds their Empathy AB to the organisation's Influence score.
    • The Gōketsu Clan does not currently have a diplomat.
  • General:
    • Responsible for the clan's military readiness.
    • The general adds their Intimidation AB to the organisation's Might score.
    • The Gōketsu Clan does not currently have a general.
  • Leader:
    • Responsible for inspiring and directing the clan.
    • The leader adds their Presence AB to the organisation's Loyalty score.
    • Hazō is currently the Gōketsu Clan's leader.
  • Spymaster:
    • Responsible for intelligence gathering and counterespionage.
    • The spymaster adds their Deceit AB to the organisation's Intelligence score.
    • Mari is currently the Gōketsu Clan's spymaster.
  • Treasurer:
    • Responsible for handling the clan's lands and material assets.
    • The treasurer adds their Examination AB to the organisation's Wealth score.
    • The Gōketsu Clan does not currently have a treasurer.
As this is a full-time responsibility, a character assigned to one of these roles will not have narrative time for other assignments other than a modest number of typical ninja missions per month.

IIRC, Akane and Yuno took up positions. I know Yuno became the General, but I forget what position Akane took up. I also have. A vague recollection that we filled another position, too, but I can't recall which one or who did it.

IIRC, the only positions that are currently open are whatever Akane's job was, and the Treasurer Position.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for.

@Paperclipped would you mind updating the clan roster threadmark to reflect who holds what positions?

[x] Action Plan: Leadership
  • Jin
    • Don't sign the order. Tear it in half.
    • (empathetic) Of course we're not going to order him to become an oath-breaker. And now that it's pointed out, his implication is correct, it wouldn't be right of us to take KEI exchange jutsu unilatery like that. Maybe we'll negotiate something with KEI leadership later.
    • (sincere gratitude) Thank him for warning us. Good work.
  • Mio
    • "Leaving a clan alive is impossible, so I won't." sounds bad.
    • Is Mio a danger to herself? How much so? Do we need to put her on suicide watch?
    • Leave, Mari/Kei-check following, then return if not vetoed:
      • Read her in on necromancy.
      • This isn't a fairytale, this isn't madness, this is real. We rescued Daizen. We saw visions of Jiraiya using a kata that we didn't recognise, but the toads did. Hyuuga and Uchiha found the scar of the rift, and Kagome-sensei's seals confirmed it. We're working on the necesarry seals to open it again, and making progress.
      • Create aspects and spend FP to get her on board
      • Have Mari/others help set this up as appropriate.
      • Mio was upset about not being part of our inner circle? Well now she's part of our greatest clan secret. Maybe it's really the afterlife, maybe it isn't. But it really looks like it.
      • This is what has been eating our time. This is what we're so busy working on that we've neglected forming the bonds we should have. We're trying to rescue them all. And we want her to help.
      • We want her to working on how we can survive in a path where chakra doesn't work. Organise civilian hunters and survivalists. Hire cartographers. Network with weapon/taijutsu users. Whatever else either of us think of later. Her job, if she accepts it, is to help us carve a path to our loved ones once we manage to crack this thing open again.
  • Haru
    • Hazou knows that Haru is part of an anti-Hazou faction.
    • We cannot stress this enough: Good. Seriously. Thank the fucking Sage.
    • Hazou is the furthest thing from infallible, and he knows it. He screws up all the time, and it is an enormous relief to have more people around who aren't getting too hero-worshippy to care.
    • We are frazzled and distracted, and being pulled in a thousand different directions. And sometimes an S-rank murderer pops out of nowhere and decides we're his newest murder-cult apprentice. We watched this stuff knock Jiraiya into exhaustion. In case it wasn't blindingly obvious, we are not Jiraiya.
    • We want Haru to pass on anonymous complaints to us so that we can better keep track of problems.
    • We also want his honest opinions, even if he thinks they would be insulting. We know that goes against his nature. He has spent a long long time fighting to keep his poker face around smug clan bastards being their infuriating selves. After this long, dropping that filter probably feels downright unsafe. But we are counting on him to speak truth to power here, for the safety of everyone who would never dream of criticising us out loud.
  • Offscreen
    • Continue visiting Mareo.

I'm against bringing Mio in on Necromancy, given her lack of social stats. Otherwise looks good.

Mind tossing in something about visiting Mareo, if you can? Not a deal breaker if not, just don't want to leave him hanging too long. Ninja Gramps is wholesome.
