We could ask Snowflake to test the newfanged flying machine.
My plan explicitly does this
[X] He Blinded Me With Science
Word Count: Low

  • After training Kagome for the day, ask Snowflake to hang out. It's wartime after all, so they should make memories together while they can! Hazou hasn't been around her nearly as long as the others.
    • BE MINDFUL OF HER THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS, YOU WANT TO BE A SUPPORTIVE FRIEND AFTER ALL. NO SERIOUSLY HAZOU, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION.
    • Ami-Style training: Have Snowflake toss practice Kunai at Hazou to help him train back up to field-readiness. Have Hazou face away and dodge them solely by the movement of their shadows.
    • If she's willing, perform some chakra experiments. Give her a chakdar, see if it vibrates with equal intensity for each cast of Substitution. Measure distances precisely and stay consistent to minimize variables.
  • Our amazing Skyslider team has made incredible progress. Would Snowflake be willing to test the difficulty of boarding one from Skywalkers? Hazou would, but he's not quite recovered yet. If not, he can try it in a few weeks.
    • If all goes well, update Asuma on their current capabilities.
      • The first successful Skyslider, model name "Michiki", has been made.
      • Is this useful enough to think about scaling production up?
      • Emphasize the contributions of the civilian team
  • Hazoulation:
    • Give the team a large bonus.
    • Congratulate them and thank them, but note that their work isn't over yet.
      • Tools like this could be imperative to winning the war
      • Any improvements to stability, flight speed, and duration could be helpful.
@Velorien How do you feel about chakra science, and Hazou doing chakra science alongside Snowflake? Also generally does the plan seem fun to you?

[X] He Blinded Me With Science

How OPSEC is skysliders? Can we share with Snowflake? I vaguely remember us planning to share with Akane, is this a "por que no los dos" / "might as well while we're hanging out with Snowflake" type deal?

------

When's the last time we got Haru on screen? Do we want some bonding time / a chance to figure him out?

Alternatively, I have a desire to get more screentime with Hinata, because she's been a background character who has had a big impact in our lives and will continue to do so. Is now as good a time as any?

(a minor plea to those who are voting to timeskip to not)

I'm not clear what is being implied here. Is Snowflake being a shadow clone meant to be classified?
It was the specifics about the Shadow Clone/Bloodline interaction that I was annoyed at. Also the "I have my own memories" part.
I am not a Nara social experiment or Kei playing pretend. I am what happens when a ninjutsu and a Bloodline Limit that were never meant to cross paths collide and cancel each other out. Despite the metaphysical connections, I am my own being, with my own memories and my own personality

Actually Noburi knows about FOOM and has 10 deceit. Let's start to fix that

[X] Training Noburi: Learning to lie
Deceit 10 -> 19 (155 XP)
Chakra reserves 25-> 26 (52 xp)
save 10 XP
For anyone hesitant to vote for this plan, I'd like to point out that Deceit not only helps when people are investigating a secret, but also helps prevent people from learning that there is even a secret to investigate.

With FOOM being as important as it is, we don't want even the fact that we're doing anything suspicious to leak. For only 155 XP, we double his ability to hide the project from detection. Now that he's started doing classified Zoo Rushes, we even have a good excuse for why we suddenly care about raising his OPSEC abilities.

Why are we angling for another time skip when we don't really know what happened in the last one.

Where are we anyway when it comes to Isan and/or Orochimaru's mission? I haven't managed to keep up with the intermittent discussions.

Since it's come up, have a character kanji infopost.

Hazō

Kurosawa Hazō -> Gōketsu Hazō
黒澤 範蔵 -> 豪傑 範蔵

Hazō was named by the early player @Neo-Chan. @Neo-Chan, if you remember how you came up with the name, please let us know.

"Kurosawa" means "black swamp", made known in the West by the famous film-maker Akira Kurosawa. "Hazō" isn't a real name, so we've used a variant of the kanji for "Hanzō", the historical ninja and his assumed inspiration. "Hanzō" is a traditional Kurosawa Clan name with kanji meaning "example/model storehouse".

"Gōketsu" was made up by Jiraiya, and is written with kanji meaning "manly + best". It is a reference to the original work from which he is an expy in canon. To quote a Japanese dictionary:

Gōketsu (豪傑)
  1. A person with guts, excelling in wit and valour far beyond ordinary people.
  2. A bold-spirited person who does not concern himself with trivial things. Alternatively, an eccentric person.
Related:
Gōketsu warai (豪傑笑い) A loud, boisterous laugh
Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (児雷也豪傑物語) The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya

Kei

Mori Keiko -> Gōketsu Keiko -> Nara Kei
守 恵子 -> 豪傑 恵子 -> 奈良 恵

Like Hazō, Kei was named by the players, but unfortunately everything else is lost in the mists of time.

"Mori" means "protect", while Keiko means "blessed child". Both are common Japanese names, although 森 Mori, meaning "forest", is even more common. "Nara" doesn't mean anything in particular, being a canon reference to a Japanese city known for its deer worship (Kishimoto is not subtle; "shika" also means "deer"). Kei got rid of the "child" ending (very common in Japanese women's names) in an immature attempt to be more mature, and it stuck. It is currently her legal name.

Noburi

Wakahisa Noburi -> Gōketsu Noburi
若久 登 -> 豪傑 登

Like Hazō, Noburi was named by the players, but unfortunately everything else is lost in the mists of time.

"Wakahisa" is an obscure Japanese place name written as "youth + long time/eternity". "Noburi" is not a real name, so we've used the kanji for the nearest plausible Japanese name, "Noboru" (meaning "climb/ascend"). The priest bit his tongue during Noburi's naming ceremony, and having a weird name in no way helped Noburi's Academy bullying problems.

Mari

Inoue Mariko -> Inoue Mari -> Gōketsu Mari
井上 麻[里子 -> 井上 麻里 -> 豪傑 麻里

"Inoue", meaning "on top of the well", is an extremely common Japanese surname with transparent etymological origins. "Mariko", "hemp + village + child", is a common, unremarkable name of the kind a peasant might give her daughter. Like Kei, Mari ditched the "child" ending.

Kagome

Kagome -> Gōketsu Kagome
籠女 -> 豪傑 籠女

"Kagome" is a Japanese female given name written as "cage + woman". Both IC and OOC, it is a mystery: "Kagome kagome" is a popular Japanese children's game with cryptic lyrics that vary by region. As a dictionary word, it also refers to a basket weave pattern.

Akane

Ishihara Akane -> Gōketsu Akane
石原 茜 - > 豪傑 茜

"Ishihara" is a common Japanese surname meaning "stony field". "Akane" is also common, and means "madder", as in the plant. As a point of trivia, "akane" is also a homophone for "red roots", and madder roots were historically used as a source of red pigment for dyes.

Haru

Yamamoto Haru -> Gōketsu Haru
山本 春 -> 豪傑 春

"Yamamoto" is a common Japanese surname meaning "base of the mountain". "Haru" is a reasonably common name meaning "spring", as in the season, although it is more commonly used as a female name.

Yuno

Gasai Yuno -> Kannagi Yuno -> Gōketsu Yuno
我妻 由乃 -> 神薙 由乃 -> 豪傑 由乃

Yuno's birth name comes from her original canon in Future Diary. "Gasai" means "my wife", and is presumably a reference to Yuno's obsession with being by the protagonist's side. "Yuno" is written with the kanji for "reason + of" and probably doesn't mean anything in particular. "Kannagi" is an uncommon surname; as a word, it means "oracle", but Isan's weaponmaster clan uses kanji meaning "god + mow down [enemies]"--this is the "nagi" of "naginata".

Bonus: Ami

Mori Ami
守 編

"Ami" means "knit/compile/edit".

Note: Most Japanese names can be spelled with a variety of kanji, and sometimes Japanese parents will straight up combine kanji they like with names they like even if there's no historical, etymological, or traditional grounding for it. Likewise, a name having a dictionary meaning is no guarantee that it will be spelled with the corresponding kanji. Some names are not written with kanji at all--most of the younger generation in canon write their names with katakana, presumably to make life easier for younger readers, even though they have obvious kanji (for example, "Hyūga" and "Hinata" are normally written the same way, meaning "place where the sun shines".) As an anecdote, I once met a Japanese man named Shinobu who was fed up with foreigners thinking it was "shinobi", and resolved to name his eventual child Kiara precisely because it didn't mean anything.

I notice that you neglected to mention that Mari translates as "truth" in a clear reference to the Orwellian memory hole and, oh, what is her signature forbidden sacrificial technique?

Will do, will ping you when it's finished, which will depend on if I'm going original art myself or not.

Also, almost completely agree with who would play what, though I could see Kagome playing Iron works, and being confused that other people find it hard while simultaneously losing first in commander due to lack of trust and bluff.

I actually fully agree with Lailoken in this case. Cannibalism? Check. Farmed fish in real life? Check. Very specific needs? Check, and in a way that cancels out their natural hardiness.

Canon QM says a 1-year maturation process before breeding. Atlantic salmon take 1-3 years to reach sexual maturity, with part of the variance being due to size because nature is rough. If we assume the fish experts have it at one consistency due to feeding and care, that checks out, and explains some of the fiddly bits (not just keeping alive, but maximizing useful life cycles)(but also keeping them from eating each other).

5-8 years is a normal life expectancy, 13 is the most on record.
So, 1 year for maturation, that take the most effort from the experts. Then adult, able to reproduce Or be drained, in a one year cycle. Live ~6.5 years total, where first year is investment, years after are payout or next generation growth on an annual basis for each fish.

@eaglejarl does the seem viable? Sorry I didn't tag relevant posts, I can if it's easier.

Good catch. Most folks there likely know, but they may not all. Hanabi definitely doesn't, Rock Lee either. Oops.

The fact that he's in part alienating the next generation of Hyuga, one of his nominal allies, is a big flub right here. Hinata is already more moderate than the elders, but getting an entire generation of Hyuga on our side is just great.

Best keep that in our back pocket for next time we're in a clan meeting and Hagoromo is causing an issue.

Him leaving on that note is going to be a hard hit to his control over his clan by the others in attendance. He looks like an idiot. Not only to us, but to his own clansmen too. And he can't tell anyone about what happened, without Naruto or Tsunade giving a play by play recount that would hurt him more than he'd get from it. A couple more interactions like that, and the traditionalist faction will need a new leader.

Also, she said the line!

... So I get why it was written this way, but I really don't like Hazō being so cavalier about the death of sentient beings for him to do something. Come on Hazō, they're literally dying for you to do your thing, show some respect. Uplift for all sentient life.

I agree with this approach. Not all capital needs to be used right away, and having cards in our hand keeps us from having to madly draw next time a threat hits the table.

Michiki would be an excellent paper writer. Technical language to avoid bluntly saying failure, and healthy fear of person giving the funding. But this is huge. Skywalker to glider plus skytowers let's us stage full-on sky combat. Meaning with staging and scouting without using the costly resource.
... Assuming it's sunny, anyway.

Is the glider able to be sealed and unsealed in one piece?

So is Asuma supposed to visit all of them in their homes? He is kinda busy rn
Oh no that would be ridiculous. It'd just be Miki, the project lead, and it wouldn't be a house call. The Hokage doesn't do house calls.

Not sure on exact wording. I'm currently on three pills of Benadryl so my brain isn't really working at its highest state rn. I can try to come up with something, if you want, but I'm not sure how good it'll be in my present condition. Even typing this was hard.

[X] Action Plan: Finish the Damn Consequence
Word Count: <300
  • (Intended timeframe: Until Hazou's Severe Consequences are gone)
  • Celebrate Akane's birthday.
  • Hazoulation:
    • Give the team a large bonus.
    • Congratulate them and thank them, but note that their work isn't over yet.
      • Tools like this could be imperative to winning the war
      • Any improvements to stability, flight speed, and duration could be helpful.
    • Train Akane to use them in tandem with skywalkers.
    • Update Asuma on the current capabilities.
      • The first successful Skyslider, model name "Michiki", has been made.
      • Is this useful enough to think about scaling production up?
      • Emphasize the contributions of the civilian team
  • Ask Cantelope and Cantilever to travel to Pangolin.
    • Chance to see a new land.
    • Chance to represent Dog at the Conclave.
    • Chance to meet other Summon Clans and hear their stories.
    • Chance to influence those Clans. Perhaps Pangolins that are less genocidal?

This plan is very thin on the details right now, but this seems to be all the good stuff coming up for us, in about three scenes. I would really appreciate more suggestions to flesh it out.

@Velorien are you willing to write the Dogs scene, or should we figure out an alternative third scene?

Sadly, I cannot vote for a timeskip until we powered Akane up for future missions. Also... Are we going for Deceit for Noburi? not CR or Alert? He is going on missions too, i would like to note.

Might mention that the Hokage is willing to pay them
Removed along with the Dog section.

I'd rather leave the Dogs to the expert.
Removed the Dog section, replaced with a chat with Yuno + Forbidden Lore fishing.

Worth noting that Velorien doesn't like doing timeskips.
Also, you are a very brave individual, asking for two timeskips back to back in the middle of a war.
Less than a day's worth of scenes in a 9-day plan? What do you think?
Just signal boosting this.
Why are we angling for another time skip when we don't really know what happened in the last one.
Alright, here's my rationale:
  1. Hazou is training Kagome in Summoning. This is not just a full-time job, it takes up 14 hours a day and managing the clan and other duties easily takes up the rest of his time. As a result, any amount of time until the Summoning training is done is fully booked, and any scenes we vote in are squeezed in at the expense of Summoning training.
  2. The suggested time frame is only a suggestion, and the QM will ignore the suggestion if they don't like it.
  3. If something important happens, it will interrupt the plan, like Zabuza showing up the the Game Night
    1. By extension, we can infer that nothing important or actionable for Hazou happened in the last two weeks, because otherwise the update would have been interrupted.
    2. Hazou himself isn't relevant to the war -- we've asked Asuma to be a part of strategic and tactical planning, we've asked for the retrieved intelligence from the base, and we've been told no. We, the players, still don't really understand what ninja war is like. The Zoo Rush idea was our best shot given the information we had available, and since then we've received approximately no new information, including on Lightning or other parties, so we can't have new ideas. Instead, the most important thing is getting to a position where we can actually gather new information.
But I can see that asking for time to pass is wildly unpopular, so I'll remove it. I'll continue advocating the plan because Hazou-Snowflake romance continues to skeeve me out.

@Velorien Since we learned from last cycle that it's important to test our unconfirmed assumptions, is the rationale outlined above reasonable? Or am I making a bad assumption somewhere?

Don't forget the word 'manufacturability'. 7 skyslider is a tactical operation. 70 skysliders is a strategic tool. 700 skysliders is a game changer.
Added.

@Paperclipped anyway to add this bit of harmless fun?
Added.

    • You mentioned that Orochimaru was an Asura. What does that mean?
    • How is Satsuko doing? Could you tell us about Satsuko's story?

For her next step in SC training ability, Akane needs 495 XP to jump from Resolve 39 (10 training blocks for +1.0x XP) to Resolve 50 (15 training blocks for +1.5x XP). At present, she's saved up 311 XP. However, being deployed in the war, it seems likely that upgrading her base stats could be a more valuable long-term use of that same XP than finishing saving up for the jump (as she can't use SC training if she's dead).

However, the most important thing remains: finding a niche for Akane (e.g. skyslider training) that doesn't require her to be deployed as an ordinary punch-chuunin mook.

Note: we don't want to push a stat to 50, since that will make us have to do a considerably more painful Resolve jump over the 50s.

[] Training Akane: Save up for the Resolve jump

No changes.
Save 311 XP.

Have another counter proposal if we want to spend Akane Xp. As we got shown in story she has terrible deceit. Literally can not lie to save her life. Getting her decent deceit would drastically improve foom OPSEC. We can do a general increase of Alertness, Athletics, and deceit

My plan explicitly does this

@Velorien How do you feel about chakra science, and Hazou doing chakra science alongside Snowflake? Also generally does the plan seem fun to you?
Honestly, no. The chakra science especially. I must say I'm confused about what makes it sound fun to you (IC, as a way to spend time with Snowflake).

Also the "I have my own memories" part.
The thing is, if she doesn't have her own memories, she doesn't have her own personality, which would be tantamount to saying that she is not a person. If you wish to suggest to Snowflake that she claim this in the name of OPSEC, more power to you.

Edit: More generally, I'm confused about what this is meant to defend. Shadow clones having their creators' memories is the main thing everyone knows about the technique, since otherwise they wouldn't share the creators' skills or be able to pass as them, and would be strictly worse than elemental clones. Snowflake having her own memories is an effect of the Frozen Skein which it is useless for anyone to know about.

I notice that you neglected to mention that Mari translates as "truth" in a clear reference to the Orwellian memory hole and, oh, what is her signature forbidden sacrificial technique?
??? No, it doesn't.

Also, I named Mari. Why would you tell me what her name is or is not referencing?

@Velorien Since we learned from last cycle that it's important to test our unconfirmed assumptions, is the rationale outlined above reasonable? Or am I making a bad assumption somewhere?
Reasonable overall, with the caveat that I would say there are always things you can do at a given time, and often some of them are time-sensitive.
