[X][Progression] It should take about a 1-2 years of adventuring for Hazou to be able to throw hands with the average Jonin on stats alone (no seals, no tricks, no prep).
For additional context, I think that unstagnated TR FOOM gets us about 12 xp/day.
E: that's wrong, we're faster than that with TRs.
Employing this strategy means we need to level BoC - our biggest source of substrate just fucked off - which will slow things down further, as will stagnation. So, this vote meansa not-insignificant an increase even if we clear our stagnancy.
I would be surprised to find out he's constantly harried/in fear for his life in the afterlife. I would have expected him to have figured out how to steer clear of anything that's going to kick his ass and to have achieved a level of stability and control over his life that's compatible with confidence. (I honestly expect we can track him down by following the Icha-Icha drafts carved in the bark of the trees we encounter. When did he last have this much time to write?) Hazo appearing doesn't mean he suddenly realizes how weak he is, either - it means that he has another sort of power back. It's not personal power, but it's family and mentorship and instruction and I expect he'd...
Like, we show up and disrupt his life, right? But suddenly he can get it all back. He's not going to back down from a challenge just because it's going to be hard or scary or dangerous. The Toad Sage has been in worse scrapes before, and got through it with a dashing smile. That's not deflating, it's motivating, and he's going to use everything he's got to get through it. He isn't flashy jutsu or Toads or even the ability to punch through a tree. He's resolve, willpower, and a fundamental inability to give up on what's precious to him. Again, when we're back on the Human Path it's a different ballgame, but if it's him and Hazo and Akane palling around, he doesn't need to worry about respect or losing face - he gets to step into Hiruzen's shoes.
For the record, this requires a minimum rate of about 11/day for the two year option, 22/day for the one year option.

Huh. I'd always looked at Jiraiya as being fundamentally confident - maybe when he was younger, this would have been true, but part of being a jonin is having gotten to the core of 'I am', right? He's Jiraiya. Even if he can't cram a rasengan down someone's throat, he's still a wise, suave, battle-tested spymaster and martial artist. When he gets back into the Human Path and suddenly a chuunin can take him out, yeah, that's a big deal, but that's not really what we're talking about right now, correct?Part of what defines Jiraiya's character is his power. It's what gives him the confidence to do what he thinks is right and damn the consequences, or to clown around without needing to worry that people will lose respect for him, or or or... Without that power he stops being the brash, confident, braggadocious, eccentric character that I enjoy so much. Suddenly, he's second guessing himself and struggling to deal with the shattering of the self-image that he built over decades. It's a compelling story, but I'm already working on that one in my original novel. No need to tell it in MfD as well.
